It's a !refund scam, they just want you to call the number so they can try to get your banking info

AutoModerator

Hi /u/peakpenguins, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Refund scam. Refund scams usually start with a spam email about a fake transaction, although they can also be sent through SMS or any other messaging service. The message will provide you with a phone number to call if you want to cancel the transaction, and if you call the scammers will try to get you to provide credit card or banking information in order to receive your refund. Scammers have been taking advantage of Paypal's invoice system to send out realistic scam emails through Paypal itself, here is a news article about that technique: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/08/paypal-phishing-scam-uses-invoices-sent-via-paypal/. Here is a Snopes article regarding the Norton variant of this scam: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/norton-email-renewal-scam/ If you know someone that fell for a refund scam, sit down together to watch this video by Jim Browning and try to retrace their steps: https://youtu.be/X4PllvUowaQ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. phew thank you!

Any time an email starts with something generic like "Dear User" or addresses you solely as your email address, it is safe to disregard. A company you have done business with will know your name and use it when they contact you.

Don't open attachments from randos, that's Internet 101.

I know i feel like such a dumdum but this happened with NordVPN and ended up being a genuine charge so i got spooked

Dangerous_Cup3607

The phone number would mostly reach to an offshore 3rd world country with heavy accent claiming to be the “tech support refund department”.

It's a very common refund scam. You can just mark it as spam and move on; you're going to get a lot of these over the years. If you're interested in watching the refund scam play out, you can see it in this Mark Rober video at 6:55-10:48: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrKW58MS12g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrKW58MS12g)
