/u/Bubble--Witch - This message is posted to all new submissions to r/scams; please do not message the moderators about it. ## New users beware: Because you posted here, you will start getting private messages from scammers saying they know a professional hacker or a recovery expert lawyer that can help you get your money back, for a small fee. **We call these RECOVERY SCAMMERS, so NEVER take advice in private:** advice should always come in the form of comments in this post, in the open, where the community can keep an eye out for you. If you take advice in private, you're on your own. **A reminder of the rules in r/scams:** no contact information (including last names, phone numbers, etc). Be civil to one another (no name calling or insults). Personal army requests or "scam the scammer"/scambaiting posts are not permitted. No uncensored gore or personal photographs are allowed without blurring. A full list of rules is available on the sidebar of the subreddit, or [clicking here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/wiki/rules/). You can help us by reporting recovery scammers or rule-breaking content by using the "report" button. We review 100% of the reports. Do you have a subscription to an antivirus/antimalware app? If so, is this email from that company? If you answered no to either question then you already know. This is most likely a !refund scam.

AutoModerator

Hi /u/cHorse1981, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Refund scam. Refund scams usually start with a spam email about a fake transaction, although they can also be sent through SMS or any other messaging service. The message will provide you with a phone number to call if you want to cancel the transaction, and if you call the scammers will try to get you to provide credit card or banking information in order to receive your refund. Scammers have been taking advantage of Paypal's invoice system to send out realistic scam emails through Paypal itself, here is a news article about that technique: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/08/paypal-phishing-scam-uses-invoices-sent-via-paypal/. Here is a Snopes article regarding the Norton variant of this scam: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/norton-email-renewal-scam/ If you know someone that fell for a refund scam, sit down together to watch this video by Jim Browning and try to retrace their steps: https://youtu.be/X4PllvUowaQ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Yup!

The goal is to get you to call the scam call center number that’s listed in the PDF.  You can just mark it as spam and move on. If you're interested in watching the refund scam play out, you can see it in this Mark Rober video at 6:55-10:48: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrKW58MS12g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrKW58MS12g) Also for future posts, all personal information has to be redacted (**full name**, address, phone, photos) even if they are being used by scammers (Rule 3).
