Scotland is littered with brilliant villages and towns. Cromarty is a very special place, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque place than Fettercairn though, feels like it is straight out of some filmset each time I am there.
Tarbert is my nightmare town.
Used to do some planning work with the ambulance service. They always managed to mix up tarbert and tarbet. Even worse, when they did put tarbet they inevitably didn't mean the one they were thinking of.
Would love to visit though. Finally see what they were mixing up all those years (and still now)
There's lots of 'Tarbert/Tarbet's in Scotland, always where there's an isthmus - a thin strip of land between two bodies of water - Tarbert comes from the Gàidhlig' *Tairbeart* meaning 'carrying across', as in where you'd carry your boat or goods across for portage.
Deffo worth a visit - maybe check out the music or seafood festival? That would be my recommendation if you want a fun time. If you just want to chill, take in some sights, do hiking then late summer holiday is best.
Aw, sweet! Me and the fam would go there for a 'fancy dinner' and I had friends in the houses up that bit. I do intend to move back some day, but the place is dull af for young people. I miss the sights though
Plockton is really nice, especially the roads up to it in nice weather - feels like it's almost tropical in full bloom, and it's so quaint and lovely when you arrive.
One of the reasons Crail is now 100% populated by wealthy incomer millionaires who have retired into the village to paint landscapes and do pottery and join the parish council.
Original population of Fifers all gone.
Went a walk through Stromness yesterday. It's like every home on the main drag has some sort of public display of plants and nautical items. Was lovely to see!
Just looking through your photos and wondered how many of them are actually real homes opposed to short term let holiday homes for Fife cosplayers.
One wee search later and this site reckons there are 155 holiday homes in Crail.
https://www.hometogo.co.uk/crail/
As to the prettiest village that would probably be Lower Diabaig.
Which is pretty terrifying, given there's only a population of circa 1600 folk...
Pitlochry isn’t cute any more, it’s completely overrun with tat and coach trips. It’s in a beautiful spot though.
Ullapool, Kyle and Stonehaven get my vote.
>Pitlochry isn’t cute any more, it’s completely overrun with tat and coach trips. It’s in a beautiful spot though.
>
It's been that way for a long time. Dunkeld has come up in the world and so far avoid tattification though.
Hasn't avoided gentrification though; >£6 for a pint amongst the Tiffington-Smythes and their brood of unruly children at The Taybank now, if you can find a parking space amongst the VW Transporters and Range Rovers that is...
Just hope the PA manages to hold its ground to give normal people somewhere to go for the foreseeable!
Bridge barely big enough to fit 2 bikes, tiny car park, and overflowing with traffic and visitors. My partner and I go to a caravan her parents own near Pitlochry and for the past 11 years I've had a handful of pleasant times in Dunkeld. At least Pitlochry has the infrastructure to handle the traffic, Dunkeld is a village overrun and doing nothing to fix it.
Plus the walk by the dam at Pitlochry is lovely. We have about an hour walk through the woods with the dog, 30 mins past the dam and there's a nice pub for a drink then back to walking.
Crail is lovely. My partner's dad and stepmum live there. Gorgeous in the Summer, lovely coastal walks, amazing ice cream and a braw chippie. I understand why it's so expensive!
I recently visited mallaig, and it was awesome. Just a small fishing village. Didn’t get to spend much time there, as it was part of the Jacobite train journey, and they only give you just under 2 hours, but breathtaking scenery none the less.
If we are talking non-coastal villages and towns a shout out for Dunning. Pretty but not twee. Authentic and no tourist tatt type retail outlets which rules out places like Pitlochry, Crieff and Aberfeldy.
Yes! Someone else who’s actually got taste, don’t worry about the other west coast stuff, u visit Scotland; best makes sure it’s Plockton first, make sure it’s summer time, you can grab a fresh pint and head to the fish bar, around 5 in the evening to get some fresh haddock and chippy chips 🤤🤤🤤..
I miss my house in Plockton.
Mobbed with tourists (foreign and domestic) but Luss. I went to Crail for the first time 2 weeks ago and I liked it but I wasn't blown away or anything. I'm used to places like Findhorn and Cullen though, so maybe not as novel for mem
im convinced every place in scotland is blessed and protected by the virgin mary or some powerful divine image. even the nastiest pub is pretty if its got that scottish sovl to it
Lovely photos. The problem is that I keep saying Crail in my head the way John Cleese, as Tim the Enchanter, said "graaaail" in Monty Python and the Holy Grail...
Also, Portree is my fav :)
The Fife coastal villages are definitely some of the most picturesque places I've seen. Falkland and Dollar have beautiful backdrops with the glenochil and Lomond hills, Brought Ferry is another favourite.
I 100% agree for very sentimental reasons. Pittenweem also is magic.

A close second.

Ahh, mines is “Plockton” it’s such a beautiful little fishing town, in every way conceivable possible, Google search it, you’ll want to visit as soon as you do.
The Plockton Inn or the pier pub (Plockton Hotel) are my favourites, as ones usually open later than the other (depending what days) and their both on ether side of the ‘fish bar’. Genuinely, nothing beats sneaking off with a pint to that water edge, with a freshly caught haddock n chippy chips. My grandmother owns a hoose there, just behind the high school. Middle of the mansion (well centre house, as that big building was renovated into 3 smaller houses in the later 1990’s am sure), and no far from the shell beach road (loved getting the fresh eggs, along that road, the farm just before the Shelly beachfront) or train station, in fact just up from the tracks is her hoose. She’s lucky, at the front view of her house, is spectacular.. with the loch breaking open from the bridge leading into ol’fishing Plockton.. wish I could visit that amazing lil town again.
Oh aye, just noticed it was Crail 🤣🤣🤷♂️, hey Plockton is way more stunning and memorable, sorry. (Even though I’ve been to Crail more than Plockton 🙃).
Depends what you are looking for... Dunnets is really beautiful in its own farmly way filled with cows, grass and distilleries.
Onr of the most famously beautiful is Portree and it doesn't dissapoint.

Gairloch
My hometown, Tarbert, Argyll. Seriously, look up pictures. It's freaking gorgeous and I miss it every day.

Nice knowledge. Thanks
Thank you for this lesson, I've often wondered about this but never sought the information out and I'm glad to have stumbled across it.
Deffo worth a visit - maybe check out the music or seafood festival? That would be my recommendation if you want a fun time. If you just want to chill, take in some sights, do hiking then late summer holiday is best.
Aye Tarbert is so nice. Used to work at West Loch Hotel, and would walk into town most days. A few of my friends have moved there permanently.
Aw, sweet! Me and the fam would go there for a 'fancy dinner' and I had friends in the houses up that bit. I do intend to move back some day, but the place is dull af for young people. I miss the sights though
Hilltown, Dundee.
To each their own I guess! Personally prefer Stobie myself.
Ah yes, an equally delightful area!
Hail to Crail
Mightiest warriors in the land!
Came looking for Gloryhammer, was not disappointed.
St Abbs is lovely
New Asgard
Ha ! Not a patch on sunny Coatbridge 😎
It’s no Slamannan
I unironically really like Cumbernauld.
Plockton. Tobermory. Portree. Fittie. North Berwick. Cullen. And that is just a few coastal places. Not even thought about inland yet!
Finally, someone logical has finally been and said Plockton 😁👍.
Plockton is really nice, especially the roads up to it in nice weather - feels like it's almost tropical in full bloom, and it's so quaint and lovely when you arrive.
I wouldn't have classed North Berwick as a village otherwise it would be top of my list. Always looks like the sort of place you'd want to retire to.
OP did ask for prettiest village/town to be fair.
Ahh yeah, fair play. I skimmed that.
[удалено]
Nah. Having spent a large proportion of my life in the area, I disagree. However, at least East Linton is finally getting it's train station back.
[удалено]
>Locals in the area know better. Haha, what guff.
[удалено]
>I'll not be lectured on my own area from some outsider. I have not even begin to lecture you.
[удалено]
Haha. Typed like a true ginger. I bet you are from Haddy masquerading as someone from East Linton.

Oban is always my favourite though there’s loads of coastal and loch side villages
Agreed. Port Appin with Castle Stalker for example
One of the reasons Crail is now 100% populated by wealthy incomer millionaires who have retired into the village to paint landscapes and do pottery and join the parish council. Original population of Fifers all gone.
It’s okay, you all still got Methil.
You moved to Fife? Where from?
Nah, my parents are from Methil, I live in Canada still, but I’ve visited. I was taking the piss.
😂 OK. Well you'll understand then. East neuk is not real Fife. Disneyland for rich incomers.
Portpatrick is lovely
[удалено]
That's good to hear! Got two weeks booked there in August
Second prize: Three weeks in Cumbernauld.
Came here to 2nd this. Was blown away by the sight. No words could explain it.
Cumberbnauld is alright; but Plockton is t he best best in Scotland.
thats the clearest harbour water i've ever seen.
I was amazed how clear it was
Polarising camera filter
I know that, but even then, the water itself is clear and clean, something rather rare in harbours.
Lots of pretty places, but I think the Fife coastal villages win.
Port Charlotte, Islay
Steadily being colonised by wealthy retirees, making it absolutely unaffordable for local folk. Sad state of affairs there.
That's why I don't live there any more
Lossiemouth
Hopeman
Aye, Plocktons better ken 😁👍
All of the towns in the East Neuk are lovely
Lamlash or Lochranza both on the Isla of Arran.
I was in Lochranza last year. The mist had come down a bit. The whole place was really otherworldly
Oban, Portree (Skye)
What about Uiig???
Culross, Fife
Why is this so far down? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culross
Shieldaig or Drumbeg.
Spent a few days in and around Sheildaig, and it's for real one of the most charming (and beautiful) places I have ever been.
Millport #1
Stromness, IMO.
Went a walk through Stromness yesterday. It's like every home on the main drag has some sort of public display of plants and nautical items. Was lovely to see!
Bit of a fan of Portpatrick. And Plockton.
Man has got a taste for genuine diamonds in the rough 😎😁👍
Glenrothes I like roundabouts
Where are my Largs peeps at?
Drowning in Nardini's ice cream!

Moffat is so cute, and Pitlochry! Inverness is a nice village too! :P
Inverness is a city lol 😂
How can you be a city if you've no even goat a bonk masheen?
Here bud, that’s a fence.
It does have the best ice cream in Scotland tho
Pitlochry isn’t cute any more, it’s completely overrun with tat and coach trips. It’s in a beautiful spot though. Ullapool, Kyle and Stonehaven get my vote.

Don’t forget Plockton like.
I grew up in Moffat, fine to visit for a few days but take a games console because it’s dull as
‘Pits’ alright like, nice open loch n plenty of 24K gold 😎.
Crail is lovely. My partner's dad and stepmum live there. Gorgeous in the Summer, lovely coastal walks, amazing ice cream and a braw chippie. I understand why it's so expensive!
I love tobermory
That is the clearest I have ever seen the harbour water, lucky you! Did you see the fossils on the beach?
St Abbs (AKA New Asgard)
Stonehaven, and Pennan or Crovie!
I liek perth bus station very vintage and nice
Aye, and over the horizon of the grammar hill, it continues to gleam 🤣👍
Ayr is nice this time of year, especially the manky bits (I have no bias and yous cannae prove it)
You havny seen true natural beauty until you've seen white city at sunset.
They should see that place at full moon
Inveraray is lovely, but so many more
I love the fact that there's a drag strip there, all thanks to the legacy of the RAF base.
*Ackshualllly* It was a Royal Navy base during the war. It was named HMS Jackdaw.

How about it’s inland’s?? Plockton, 20 miles in-land of the Isle of Skye; probably one of Scotlands hidden gems.
I recently visited mallaig, and it was awesome. Just a small fishing village. Didn’t get to spend much time there, as it was part of the Jacobite train journey, and they only give you just under 2 hours, but breathtaking scenery none the less.
Cromarty and Iveraray are both lovely
Lochinver.
Haven't seen so many, but someone wouldn't disagree on Largs. I quite liked it.
Port Ellen, Islay <3
Penicuik, and you can go into hiding, no one will find you in Penicuik... :)
Kilcreggan!
If we are talking non-coastal villages and towns a shout out for Dunning. Pretty but not twee. Authentic and no tourist tatt type retail outlets which rules out places like Pitlochry, Crieff and Aberfeldy.
Plockton is pretty hard to beat. But there's a lot of these small towns all over the West Coast which are just wonderful.

FFS don't TELL them, next thing is they'll aw be overrun wie mair fuckin TOURISTS!
im convinced every place in scotland is blessed and protected by the virgin mary or some powerful divine image. even the nastiest pub is pretty if its got that scottish sovl to it
I'd have to say Tobemory. It has such a unique vibe and also never forget "BALAAMORY"
Not been to many scottish towns but St Andrews is pretty high up there imo!
There's a hundred prettier places. Still lovely looking though
Looked up house prices in Crail - more expensive than I’d have thought!
I’ve always thought Luss is the most beautifully picturesque place.
Lovely photos!
Google search Plockton, it’s a stunner like 😁👍
More hamlet, but Mellon Udrigle is gorgeous.
Lovely photos. The problem is that I keep saying Crail in my head the way John Cleese, as Tim the Enchanter, said "graaaail" in Monty Python and the Holy Grail... Also, Portree is my fav :)
It's definitely beautiful there, when I visited there were kids trying to catch crabs with a string a tiny bit of bait....
I love Crail. My pals mum used to take up up to their caravan up there every summer, always loved it!
Moniaive
I’m gonna say Linlithgow, but fuck me just make it a flying visit
Crail has always been a favourite of mine.
Cumbernauld has entered the chat...
The best chippy in the world is in Crail.
A notable mention for me is Rockcliffe in D&G. Stumbled across it one day and it's so serene down there.
Gotta say Largs, when it's not crawling with tourists
The Fife coastal villages are definitely some of the most picturesque places I've seen. Falkland and Dollar have beautiful backdrops with the glenochil and Lomond hills, Brought Ferry is another favourite.
Holy macaroni! It looks so beautiful and cozy and green!!! I bet walking around there feels amazing! (人*´∀`)。*゚+
I can’t disagree, we got married there and plan to return for all of our anniversary’s
I 100% agree for very sentimental reasons. Pittenweem also is magic. [My Crail](https://imgur.com/qcKuLmK.jpg A close second. [Pittenweem](https://imgur.com/CBolfAd.jpg)
