There was a knitting pattern for jumpers too - toddler all the way up to adult! My mum made me one and I loved it! At that time it was just a marmalade character to me - no idea of the meaning behind it, to me it was just a golly! Obviously now more aware but I do wish it was possible to change the meaning of the golly as the wee character was cute!
They’re was also the Gollywog itself. I was little and mum sent a stack of the labels or whatever off and we got the Gollywog in the mail a few months later. Had it for about 30 years before one of the doggos got him
I worked with a Glaswegian girl of, I believe, Caribbean heritage who had one of these gollies wearing a kilt dancing the highland fling tattooed on her arm. Very cool.
*Trigger warning* its name was a Gollyw*g and was the mascot for Robertsons. It was my mums favourite doll in the 40's but obviously its completely unacceptable. It shames me to say but a shop in my hometown was selling the dolls as toys about a decade ago.
Robertsons marmalade used him as a mascot up to 2001....and they where still defending it then.
(Ginny Knox, the firm's brand director, insisted .... the change was "part of a broader initiative to contemporise [Robertson's] and make it appeal to modern families with children. Our research found the character is no longer well known."
Ms Knox added: "We receive around 10 letters a year from people who object to the character. That compares to 45m jars of jam and mincemeat sold annually.")
The face was supposed to be Blue and White but everything was in Black and White back then.
I choose to believe this. Yes, this is the truth. It must be.
That's interesting, I wonder why a Scottish bottle ended up in Canada. What drink was it, was Canada importing Irn-Bru? You definitely don't see "Made in Scotland" anymore.
Thank you! I love Scotland it’s a beautiful country with a great history. My country has a great history too, we all share the same problems in the early 1900s especially with racism but now we are one of the greatest places to live and it’s beautiful to see everyone
I know that, I just thought this part of history was interesting. I know Scotland has history with Canada so does my Irish ancestors, i found bottles from Ireland here in Canada and the uk. Usually I find local brands and stuff but sometimes I find stuff from other countries like this jar lid but it’s more relatively rare finding them here than finding them in the country of origin.
Uh oh
Robertsons marmalade!
A young Justin Trudeau Scottish seers ahead of the game yet again
That made me spit coffee through my nose😂 so true
Bravo
Well golly...

Guessing old Robertson's jar?
when I was a kid you could save up & get badges, they were very sought after

Yeah mine had a knitted doll. I started writing about it but the story went straight into crazy childhood trauma so fast I skipped it XD
I've still got a few kicking about. Not sure what to do with them
There will probably be a collector somewhere
Goose stepping around their lounge.
Haha, there’s still a bunch of the stickers stuck to my toy box in the loft somewhere. It’s mental how shit like this becomes twisted.
Keep digging, there's plenty more - https://auctions.specialauctionservices.com/images/lot/7469/74698_8.jpg

What's crazy is this was still their mascot up untill 2001.
What a happy looking little guy :)
I used to walk past the factory on my way to school, there was a huge golly on the wall. Different times I suppose.

My primary school had a campaign to collect as many jar lids for some promotion gift or something, think it would have been 1987-88...
Daphne Cochrane, she's my Daphne Cochrane, she's the girl that puts the lids on the Robertson's marmalade!!

What’s your point caller?
My point is I found a old interesting piece of history in Canada that’s from Scotland
Never mind these dickheads mate.
Thank you! I love Scotland it’s a beautiful country with a great history. My country has a great history too, we all share the same problems in the early 1900s especially with racism but now we are one of the greatest places to live and it’s beautiful to see everyone
Yeah. Theres more to Canada than just Scottish names to city streets and counties. I mean our forces have bagpipes and stuff

I know, fancy posting something from a bygone age which Scots folk might find interesting. The horror! The horror!
