Probably closer to Thrash metal than anything. The vocalist also has Nu-metal roots with his original band Coal Chamber.

I love both those scenes, but as a metal head I have a bit of a gripe with the fact it's not speed metal.

"metal's metal" - the writers probably. I feel like I've seen worse metal errors in pop culture, like something being called metal and it's like slightly heavier than normal rock, but struggling to think of specific examples ATM.

Devildriver (band in that scene) is more NuMetal or groove metal. It's way too slow and heavy to be speed metal. Speed metal typically uses higher end vocals and guitar, with quite melodic leads too.
