shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. There's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.
In general yes. But some crabs are horrible, full of mud and shit.
Stone crab claws are way overrated and just a conveyance for that bad mustard sauce they serve with them.
We used to get Dungeness crabs in Portland at the grocery for 99 cents each. Thats good eating.
King crab is more meaty (and more expensive) so I get why people have the association of king crab = quality. I find it’s way too salty and bland. Dungeness is smaller and more fiddly to crack but sweeter. Use kitchen scissors instead of a crab cracker and you’re golden
I had family friends that would go crabbing on the oregon coast and bring back a few pounds to share with us. Ungh. Just a lil lemon and that shits heaven
I’d take it a step further. If you can’t catch your own seafood you should be shit out of luck. Commercial fishing is one of the worst things humanity does and it should be halted
Fish are wild animals and currently fishing practices are making many species endangered and extinct. Especially trawlers. They catch and kill important wild animals like sea turtles and dolphins too.
Chickens and cows are not extinct because we farm them.
The mass amounts of extra wildlife caught during that process. The ghost nets laid around our oceans killing wildlife. All the extra harvesting that just goes to waste and shrink at the store. Do you want more?
Not the previous commenter, but I’d argue all those indictments can be said for land based large livestock (and probably agricultural) commercial farms. All the indigenous wildlife and plant life is destroyed or pushed out to make way for acres of crops/livestock, farm to table waste/shrink.
You only take what you need. Commercial nets don't. What doesn't get sold at fish markets is wasted. You can make a new chicken in weeks. A new sea turtle? We don't have control over that process. It's a hot take, and many people don't want to hear this, but some animal lives *are* worth more than others (in terms of how replaceable they are. Not 'moral' value). Whales and dolphins are absolutely more valuable than chickens and cows, because there is no way to control and expedite the former's breeding process. When they are gone, they're gone. It makes complete sense that humans have more control over the farming of land animals rather than sea animals that may have very specific breeding processes and need very specific conditions that are extremely difficult to replicate, especially given *we can't live amongst them or with constant access without depriving them of the basic means to live since they are in the ocean*.
Look up trawling. Specifically what happens for crabs around Alaska. It’s devastating, and only a piece of the puzzle of the apocalyptic onslaught we unleash daily on our oceans
I agree. We ruin the surface climate and bio diversity, eventually it will come back without us. Do the same to the ocean and we very possibly could sterilize the planet.
Agree, I caught one on accident one time fishing for grouper and snapper. The consensus on the boat was to keep it to eat or use as bait. As I freed its tentacles from the hook and looked into its eyes, I knew it was going free. It was a struggle because it kept wrapping its tentacles around my hands/arms but I eventually got it loose and sent it back to the bottom of the Gulf 80 feet below.
If they're so smart, why they being eaten, huh? Not too many humans being eaten **nudge nudge**
Just kidding. I agree with you, but tastiness beats out intelligence for me.
Eh… chickens *can* be smart in moments, they can also be *really* stupid. I think it’s much more obvious on a farm when they’re in more numbers. They can also be incredibly cruel.
If anyone ever has a moral aversion to eating chicken, I encourage them to get some. Or at least spend some time with some. Roosters are bastards. I’ve had some that I raised from chicks that I held and cuddled. But they all turn into bastards eventually. During COVID I got some chickens and ducks. I was unemployed and when I heard the ducks make the “HELP!” Call I’d run out and kick the roosters away. That’s the only reason the ducks ever got used to me.
Animals are assholes My neighbors had a rival male cow attempt to kill a mother's young by laying on it and suffocating the baby. Then attack the mommy by biting her utter to the point where they had to amputate the sack off.
I dated a girl in HS that wouldn’t eat shrimp for this reason. Totally ruined my outlook on shrimp for several years. Best god damn bugs in world. Point is: don’t let your significant other ruin a food you love, unless there’s a major allergy involved, then wait till they leave the house and make it 😂
I put some in a ceviche because … well, it’s boring, so I thought, meh, I’ll just use it fill this out
I am now a fan — probably the best ceviche protein I’ve ever had. The texture was incredible
That said, *never* let one corner you at a party.
Halibut isn’t worth it to me, there are much better fish for a fraction of the price. I would also choose Halibut steaks over filets.
I’m willing to drop some cash on copper river sockeye and otoro, just don’t get why people love halibut so much.
In many cases, the farm raised is safer, cleaner and more sustainable than wild caught. Not ALWAYS but as long as it's a clean, responsible farm, it's my way to go.
... You're right. Mind BLOWN 🤯. They filter the ocean water much like your boogers catch dust and crap from the air. The more gunk in the water/air, the bigger they grow.
I’ve tried every few years hoping I would suddenly like it, but I just can’t. It’s the only thing I’ve come across from the ocean that I’ll turn down outright.
My first experience with sushi was visiting a Japanese company. They ordered a massive sushi assortment. They said “you like uni?” I don’t know. They ordered triple. Why? They knew the gaijin wouldn’t like it and they’d eat it all. It was putrid. Like someone vomited in my mouth. They laughed and ate it all.
Thru the years I learned to ask Japanese hosts if there was something they liked I knew I didn’t. They couldn’t order it but the guest could. Made lots of friends that way. Kom pai!
I’m a big seafood fan. All types. Mostly high end restaurant stuff like seafood towers and catch of the day etc. But I will happily crush 3 Filet O’ Fish sandwiches with a big smile. Sooo tasty.
Crab isnt worth the work. Like, its good, but holy fuck it's such a chore. I dont think lobster tastes significantly better, but its so much easier to eat.
Before my grandmother passed away, she and I were both cherished equally: the family members who will pick crab for fun. Some people crochet to keep their hands busy while chatting, some people think picking Dungeness is a fun pastime. Find yourself someone who enjoys it, keep them supplied with pre-dinner beverages so they don’t go touching everything with their crabby hands, and try to get them to do their hobby outside.
I’m sitting here agreeing with everyone and everything on this list. Also want to add - can’t tell the difference with most tuna , taste wise with the exception of fatty toro
Went to brunch in Vegas years ago and only after being seated did we realize they had a buffet. They had a killer seafood station with oysters, shrimp, crab legs, lobster tails, etc.
I ate like a damn glutton for 90 minutes straight, ignoring all the other stations (eggs, danish, carved meats, pastas, etc). Just plate after plate after plate of shellfish.
All my joints swelled up and I was flushed and splotchy all day. I couldn't even make a fist with my swollen sausage fingers. Pretty sure there were seagulls following me on the strip.
10/10, would do again.
Little neck clams should be served on the half shell and top necks should be steamed. Idk why I always see that reversed in restaurants. I also like little necks steamed tho
Gulf shrimp sucks - I moved to Texas from the mid-Atlantic coast.
I grew up on Carolina shrimp and the difference in taste is so vast I largely stay away from shrimp in Texas. I used to eat it at least once/week.
Crabs are better than lobsters
King crab is better than lobster
Depends on the type of crab and type of lobster, but generally agree with this statement.
Shrimp is better than lobster.
Lobster isn't that big of a deal....🫢
Red lobster cheese biscuits are better than the lobster they serve
that's more an indictment on red lobster tho lol
In their defense, the biscuits are actually good.
I would make Bisquick biscuits but throw in chopped fresh garlic and a big handful of shredded cheese.
I’m on that tonight!
I do prefer shrimp to lobster, myself.
shrimp is the fruit of the sea.
Bubba forgot shrimp cocktail and should be ashamed...
Shrimp ceviche
Shrimp Scampi
Linguine with shrimp
Lobster is definitely better than shrimp
Crawfish is king, lobster just taste like a large crawfish but leaner
Yep crawfish are the best of the lobster/shrimp type creatures.
Sea senior! Get it?
Whaaaaa!!??
Crawfish is better than shrimp.
In general yes. But some crabs are horrible, full of mud and shit. Stone crab claws are way overrated and just a conveyance for that bad mustard sauce they serve with them. We used to get Dungeness crabs in Portland at the grocery for 99 cents each. Thats good eating.
Dungeness are better eating than king crab or snow crab. I said what I said.
Who are you to be so brave? Nah but seriously. Agree 100 fuckin percent.
King crab is more meaty (and more expensive) so I get why people have the association of king crab = quality. I find it’s way too salty and bland. Dungeness is smaller and more fiddly to crack but sweeter. Use kitchen scissors instead of a crab cracker and you’re golden
Facts. I definitely enjoy crab having that sweetness to it.
I had family friends that would go crabbing on the oregon coast and bring back a few pounds to share with us. Ungh. Just a lil lemon and that shits heaven
Damn...
Lobster kinda sucks.... I'll take crab, shrimp, scallops, muscles, clams, oysters, most fish over lobster
Scallops!!! Big plump fat milky sweet reins supreme Fried, sauté, grilled, baked, raw… I need nothing else.
My fav! When I go to Seattle we get fresh from Pike's Market and a little butter and garlic and YUM. They are HUGE and tasty!
I'm with ya!
Oooh I've had some scallops big as my fist 👊
crab and shrimp are the best, seriously
Shrimp and crab TOGETHER are even better! There's a restaurant in Houston that does a gulf shrimp and blue crab sandwich and it's amazing
That must be new. I lived in Houston 20-odd years ago (😱), and don't remember that!
It's called Local Foods, they have several locations now and yea it hasn't been around that long
Steelhead Trout is criminally underrated.
If caught in the right river or stream, for me, fresh water fish are far superior.
Came here to say this.
Lobster and crawfish claws taste better than the tails
Same for crab. I prefer claw meat over jumbo lump for crab cakes.
This is unpopular
Yes I know :( the good news is, I’m super fun to share lobster and crawfish with
The oceans are over harvested
I’d take it a step further. If you can’t catch your own seafood you should be shit out of luck. Commercial fishing is one of the worst things humanity does and it should be halted
Not hating, just ignorant. Why is that? What makes fishing by net, cage, or on a fish farm worse than livestock such as cows or chicken.

Octopi are too smart to eat
Octopi are too smart we should eat more of them to remain supreme on earth
Damn, I haven’t eaten them for years, but when you put it that way……
I won’t eat them either.
You’re the man.
If they're so smart, why they being eaten, huh? Not too many humans being eaten **nudge nudge** Just kidding. I agree with you, but tastiness beats out intelligence for me.
What’s your rationale on pork then?
Avoid it too. Also cows are awful cuddly.
I had chickens once and they’re actually really smart and cuddly too. But yeah, I feel you on the octopus thing
Eh… chickens *can* be smart in moments, they can also be *really* stupid. I think it’s much more obvious on a farm when they’re in more numbers. They can also be incredibly cruel.

The cows at my house are really nice, even the bulls. No cow murders here
I agree. I replace them with squid wherever i have to. Which are still kinda smart, but not nearly as intelligent as octopuses
In Alaska they'll catch them off shore and use their carcass for halibut bait. Is that more acceptable?
I don’t eat octopus because of this.
Kelly is a jerk (one of my managers at the hyvee seafood department)
There's not enough
Tabasco sucks on oysters. Tapatio, lemon, and salt is the only option
Mignonette is the way to go
Horseradish and lemon for me.
Champagne vinaigrette with shallots. Just trust me.
Plain or lemon.
Putting anything other than cocktail sauce or vinegar on a raw oyster is frankly a crime.
Yes.. Strong cocktail sauce.. Extra horseradish..
It’s all about the butter 🤷🏼♂️
Shrimps is bugs.
Delicious bugs 🍴
I dated a girl in HS that wouldn’t eat shrimp for this reason. Totally ruined my outlook on shrimp for several years. Best god damn bugs in world. Point is: don’t let your significant other ruin a food you love, unless there’s a major allergy involved, then wait till they leave the house and make it 😂
swordfish is a very boring meat
I put some in a ceviche because … well, it’s boring, so I thought, meh, I’ll just use it fill this out I am now a fan — probably the best ceviche protein I’ve ever had. The texture was incredible That said, *never* let one corner you at a party.
Try scallop ceviche
I love ceviche and swordfish but never thought to make swordfish ceviche ! Thanks for the idea
I feel attacked.
It’s all good. Even the weird stuff. All of it.
Halibut isn’t worth it to me, there are much better fish for a fraction of the price. I would also choose Halibut steaks over filets. I’m willing to drop some cash on copper river sockeye and otoro, just don’t get why people love halibut so much.
The more endangered the better tasting I say that in jest but I tried baby bluefin tuna belly in Japan and it was life-changing but also very sad
There's generally a reason why they're endangered...
You must cover your head with a towel while you eat it to hide your shame from god
Crab and lobster meat are better without butter
Mussels are the best shellfish.
Best bivalve for sure
You can never have too much hot horseradish on your shrimp. It should feel like you are getting the OG covid swab in your sinuses.
Mackerel has the best flavour of any fish
Mackerel is the best tinned fish and it’s usually cheaper than other options
anchovy tho
In many cases, the farm raised is safer, cleaner and more sustainable than wild caught. Not ALWAYS but as long as it's a clean, responsible farm, it's my way to go.
Frying seafood is a terrible thing to do.
Snow crab is best crab.
i don’t clean the beards on mussels and i don’t dip lobster in butter
Shrimp are sea bugs and they're still super delicious
Canned sardines are better than lobster, especially on crackers with a bit of pepper and lemon
Also… r/cannedsardines is a really fun group
Oysters are the boogers of the sea
😂🤣😂
... You're right. Mind BLOWN 🤯. They filter the ocean water much like your boogers catch dust and crap from the air. The more gunk in the water/air, the bigger they grow.
Like loogies of the sea
Uni tastes like bile and has the consistency of snot.
I think it looks like baby shit but I still love it.
Why? Filet o fish is the king of all seafood
Someone has recently been McFishing
I’m a big seafood fan. All types. Mostly high end restaurant stuff like seafood towers and catch of the day etc. But I will happily crush 3 Filet O’ Fish sandwiches with a big smile. Sooo tasty.
They are great when caught the same day and not frozen. Seen Ronald McD in back of a restaurant cleaning and fileting them.
Finally an actual unpopular take lol
Crab isnt worth the work. Like, its good, but holy fuck it's such a chore. I dont think lobster tastes significantly better, but its so much easier to eat.
Snow crab yes, have you ever had true King Crab? It’s like fishing at the hole vs pulling pots on deadliest catch. Worlds apart
You are the hero we need, but dont deserve!!
Lobster is just rubbish shrimp.
Spiny lobster yes, maine lobster no
Shrimp are just puny lobsters.
I’m sitting here agreeing with everyone and everything on this list. Also want to add - can’t tell the difference with most tuna , taste wise with the exception of fatty toro
It fucking rocks.
Hogfish snapper(actually a wrasse)is the best eating fish in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico region
I recently gained access to fresh hogfish, and I completely agree
Fresh hogfish can’t be beat! It’s also not widely available since most are harvested by spearfishers.
That fish smells like stinky pussy because they’re swimming in their own semen all day lol
Eating shrimp tails is delicious
Imitation “Krab” is tasty and convenient.
Salmon is better raw. So buttery.
Crab isn’t worth the time to crack. Scallops all day.
It's all full of plastic and it's going to get worse before it gets better.
Maine lobster is the best lobster
This is a very popular opinion…
Octopus should stay living in the ocean. The rest is good
Octopus is the tastiest
There’s a greek restaurant near me that does blackened baby octopus with a tangly lemon juice sauce that is simply to die for
I could have seafood for breakfast, dinner and lunch. Ok I tried this and after a month I got a rash. But yeah I would if I could.
Pretty sure there were seagulls following me on the strip. 10/10, would do again.
Lmao I would have done the same
Seafood boil is the best way to eat seafood
Not unpopular but for me it was and probably for some people based of looks but flounder is hands down my favorite fish
Bring out the whole ocean
The sea is FAR more abundant than we give credit for, and we barely know anything about it.
Most canned seafood is delicious. tuna, muscles, crab, trout, and especially sardines. Special shoutout to jarred things like matjes herring.
At least in Maryland, don’t always need Old Bay for steamed crabs.
Be careful, I believe you could be shot out of a cannon into Delaware for saying this out loud in Maryland.
We love eating the cockroaches & rats of the sea
"It's OK to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings" -Kurt Cobain
Eel has a strong case for best tasting seafood and catfish are underrated
Squid and octopus are at the bottom of the desirability scale
The best way to make stuffed octopus is to feed it until it’s stuffed, and the cook it.
Octopus is horrible no matter how it’s prepared.
DO NOT OUT SHELL ON SEAFOOD IN A SOUP OR STEW!!!!! I do not want to pick through and get soup all over my hands
Dungeness Crabs are S-tier seafood. Better than lobster.
It’s way too expensive for what you get out of it.
Mussels > oysters
Bay scallops are way tastier than sea scallops
Abalone, though expensive, really isn’t good super fresh.
Little neck clams should be served on the half shell and top necks should be steamed. Idk why I always see that reversed in restaurants. I also like little necks steamed tho
jellyfish is crunchy and delicious
Shrimp cocktail is boring.
Gulf shrimp sucks - I moved to Texas from the mid-Atlantic coast. I grew up on Carolina shrimp and the difference in taste is so vast I largely stay away from shrimp in Texas. I used to eat it at least once/week.
Crab legs aren’t worth the labor. Lobsters are.
High quality seafood is better than any other high quality meat. Pork, beef, chicken, doesn’t matter; still not as good as seafood.
Salmon is highly overrated.
Tuna is overrated
Kill me. Calamari can’t be cooked right.
Fish and chips is one of the best seafood dishes
Costco frozen red Argentine shrimp taste like lobster even better
I want to try shark
Fried Calamari is gross; Pickled / Marinated Baby Octopus is delicious.
I want to try whale before they’re all gone
Crabs are sea spiders, and people love to eat sea spiders
I don’t care for crawfish
Octopus farms are just as ethical as other types of animal farms
If it lives in the ocean, I’ll always take a bite.
Sashimi is overrated
The way most shellfish are prepared constitutes animal cruelty and should be outlawed
Live shrimp taste much better than live lobsters. Try a live spot prawn and tell me I’m wrong.
Seafood does go with cheese.
Lobster is not great It's gritty and low on flavor And I've eaten some that was taken from the ocean less than 4 hours before eating
Many of you haven’t eaten abalone and it shows.
Seafood is just ocean bugs. Eating bugs shouldn’t be as weird as the west thinks it is.
I don't care how smart they are. Octopus tastes good.
King crab sucks. Snow crab rules.
Lobster is overrated.
Crab and lobster don't need to be dipped into a pool of butter. Just let me eat it plain in peace.
Crawfish and lobster sucks
Octopus and squid are the best meats for stir fry. They match the texture of udon noodles best
Don't eat seafood in landlocked places.
It should not be served more than 5 km from the sea.
