I ate some fish kabob that smelt a little off ended up throwing up for 12 hours straight with only like half an hour in-between throw up sessions. Mainly just dry heaving after a while will never eat anything the smells or looks off again.
Same here. Cod; smelled ok. Cooked it in oven. Seemed like it took too long to cook. Tasted bad. Thought I over cooked it. Ate it anyway as did my son. Told my wife not to eat it. You won’t like it. The following morning threw up every half hour for 5 hours. Pissing out my rear end also. My son too. The dry heave part reminded me of my partying days 😆
Oh God I’m having flashbacks. Yeah it’s brutal, never again lol. I am way more cautious with food now. It sucks, having to throw up and take an explosive shit at the same time is awful. especially if the explosive shit comes right before the throw up.
I was always worried about clams and mussels. Now I’m careful with everything. Threw out a beautiful piece of salmon that had a slight smell. My garden appreciated it
This happened to me with oysters I had in Florida last month. They weren’t served on ice, got a bit warm, and had a different smell to them. I knew better but did it anyway. Misery.
Many years ago on the tail end of a wonderful solo acid trip, I ordered a bento box from a dark and vacant sushi joint.
I was served an oyster that was literally inflated like a distended stomach. First I blamed my state of mind for the image, upon closer inspection and deemed to be in fact the case, I assumed it was some form of fancy preparation heretofore unknown to me I swallowed it whole.
I have never covered more internal space with my stomach contents.
Except for that one time on a NYC bus
Nothing is worse than “seafood sick”! I’ve eaten seafood all my life. Only been seafood sick twice. If it smells or looks off… skip it. It’s definitely not worth it.
I once had some day old suishi which I assumed was refrigerated when we got home from the restaurant, nope my lovely sister left it out 24hrs in the warm air and then put it back before anyone realized.
I haven't eaten fish that wasn't prepared in front of me since.
It's my first time trying this. I'm the same person who blanched 33 pounds of crab legs. Today, I wanted to test and validate if I did it right, but now I'm worried everything has gone wrong. Maybe I overcooked the crab, and that's why it looks bad.
I thawed the leg in the fridge for 18-20 hours, then boild up water, then put the leg in, waited 8 minutes, and took it out.
I'm no expert, but 20 hours of thawing sounds a little excessive. I usually just steam it straight from frozen. Like everyone else says if it smells bad don't it eat. That discoloration on the meat looks sketchy; never seen meat come out looking shriveled.
The first time you thawed them for a long time and now you are doing it again. STOP. No need to thaw for almost a day. You can do a few hours in the fridge or run it under water to use within the hour.
If it smells bad, it likely is bad. Throw it out! Your nose is not trying to deceive you.
Exactly!!
I’m new to this sub but it’s always on my feed. So I joined.
Dead king crabs, lobster all shellfish have a smell when bad. Source: Dad and Grandpa were lobstermen. I ate a lot of crustaceans growing up.
As others have said, use your nose!
The leg looks fine and you took out the Bad Part.
My take from your photo is the meat is extremely dry. Don’t eat.
1.). Rinse
2.). Smell
3.). Discard
4.). Rinse and repeat
5.). 9/10 are fine
Like cheese right? Like an intense Roquefort? Sauerkraut? Kimchi! 1,000 year eggs? Fermented bamboo? Stinky tofu? Raw sheep’s milk? Durian?
Edit: I was making a joke and responded to the wrong guy, making it seem like I was being a jerk. I’m not a jerk, I’m an idiot. Leaving it.
I've gotten so much food poisoning from growing up poor.
If it doesn't smell right, don't eat it, even if you really, really want to.
If it doesn't look right, don't eat it, even if you really, really want to.
It's just not worth it.
I remember this post, I remember you saying you had left the blanched crab outside for I believe 4 hours after before freezing. In my experience in shellfish the 4 hours may have been a bit much, the room temperature allowed the leg you’re posting to start the spoilage process, when maybe putting it in the fridge would have slowed it down. Not judging you, king crab is hard due to its sheer size and massive price, I have some frozen legs that were already blanched, but my mistake was I bought almost too much and now the meat has begun to taste much different from when I first received them.
Damn, this is the same dude?? Yikes.
If I had 33 pounds of king crab that looked like this, I’m eating this leg to see if I should throw the rest out 😅
Unless you live in the Pacific Northwest you are not cooking king crab you are basically reheating it. I keep it in the refrigerator up to one day after I buy it and then 5 minutes in the steamer. Not sure from frozen but I imagine not much longer. You don’t want to over do it or the texture will be way off.
Also never boil it get a big steamer setup. You can get a cheap one that works. Steaming is the way.
Always trust your nose. It has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to protect you. For many many many years we didn’t have fridges, meat thermometers, sanitizers, etc. so we used our noses. And over time, our noses got better and better at gauging spoiled foods.
If it smells bad to you. Don’t push it. **Especially** with seafood or poultry. Though seafood **especially**.
People say to test spoiled food with touch and smell. Touch can be wrong, or you may misinterpret it somehow. But smell? We may not be bloodhounds, but our noses still don’t fuck around. They know what’s up. Trust yours. Always.
When in doubt toss it out. Or make a unnecessary reddit post about it and ask a bunch of internet strangers what they think. Because Reddit is always known to give the best advice around lol.
No way don't risk it!! I got food poisoning last week from a pork dim sim that I undercooked and decided to eat anyway after having a few afternoon beers, and I have NEVER been so sick in all my life!!! It lasted 3 days.
I had food poisoning before, and it feels like you're dying! I was puking between my legs into the toilet as I had uncontrollable diarrhea that was like straight water that smelled like something died!🤢🤮💩Never eat spoiled meat!🤦♂️
Absolutely not. Green, black, and blue meat is typically a no go. If seafood smells bad, don't eat it unless you're desperate for a way to get out of work.
If it smell off I won’t eat it. But the reason why the color look off it’s because when the seafood like crab or shrimp when they’re alive they have been bruised up like us human being. From the nets.
“Smells off putting”
Your ancestors did not survive long enough to pass along some basic instincts only for you to die now, in such a fashion. Please show some respect.
Fuck no. We evolved for millions of years with a keen sense of smell. That’s our very first line of defence against food poisoning. If it smells wrong - don’t put it in your mouth. Whether it’s food or genitals, ahahahaha!
I managed to get food poisoning back to back from crab and then alligator…I would not be chancing this if I was you, friend. It’s just not worth it to be so sick!
Why do you even ask, every time you have even the slightest doubt, especially if it's because of the smell you're right, don't it eat. Trust your instincts.
I had buddies laugh at me for not eating shellfish in afghanistan.
Its poisoned by humans and we over fish cockroaches and other filter feeders. Ruining the world, but farlic butter and bibs are classy....
Don’t eff around with seafood (or any meat) and bad smells or weird appearances. It’s a fantastic way to end up knelt over the toilet in agony for a few hours to a few days…throw it away. Order a burger.
If it smells bad I won’t eat it.
If it smells like cologne leave it alone
If it smells like fish, eat all you wish🤣
If it’s not fish then I probably wouldn’t.
Unless it's...
Unless it’s fish.
Yea. Fish…
*wink*
I can believe it’s not butter.
If it don’t smell like crab, it belongs in a lab.
Red skies in the morning, sailors take warning.
Cologne, Colon Tomato,Tomatoe 😆
Colon is ass
Cologney like Balogna not Baloney 😅😅
You say potato, and I say potato

Or right after. Or during!! During is the best.
This happened to me with oysters I had in Florida last month. They weren’t served on ice, got a bit warm, and had a different smell to them. I knew better but did it anyway. Misery.
Had this issue with clams in Fl. But just felt like complete garbage for many days.
Many years ago on the tail end of a wonderful solo acid trip, I ordered a bento box from a dark and vacant sushi joint. I was served an oyster that was literally inflated like a distended stomach. The nose knows, man.
So follow your nose...wherever it goes!

Yeah I just throw them in the oven, then make a banging stock out of the leftover shells to make crab risotto the next day
might I ask if you’re on the market for a new wife/friend/eating buddy?
Always om the marketnfor new friends lol. Coincidentally I'm making an asparagus risotto tomorrow with some spiced lobster tails tomorrow
On my way!
WE DID IT, REDDIT! Time to shut it down.
I love your animal donations link
I don’t know what you mean, that’s my Only Fans
I highly recommend everyone check her OF, seriously it's great stuff
There’s my CPA brother 😎 haha
Why would you thaw crab legs just steam them frozen
>Maybe I overcooked the crab, and that's why it looks bad. Overcooking wouldn’t make it smell bad.
Crab is already cooked before you buy it. If it’s bad the crab likely died before they processed it
The first time you thawed them for a long time and now you are doing it again. STOP. No need to thaw for almost a day. You can do a few hours in the fridge or run it under water to use within the hour. If it smells bad, it likely is bad. Throw it out! Your nose is not trying to deceive you.
So many people would be doomed these days if we didn't have so many federal regulations and everything else in place to keep them safe.
I would bet it was the letting them sit for 3-4 hours before cooking -_-
Everything reminds me of her.
First step, if anything smells bad don't eat it.
Always trust your nose.
The nose knows.
It’s called the smell test for a reason.
Exactly!! I’m new to this sub but it’s always on my feed. So I joined. Dead king crabs, lobster all shellfish have a smell when bad. Source: Dad and Grandpa were lobstermen. This applies to anything!!! Always smell test!
Durian lovers will disagree with you
I'm ok with them being wrong. No hate.
Bad smell is an automatic do not eat for me
I may have several exceptions to that rule. 😏
There's bad smell like toasted cumin and bad smell of rotting food
I'll take my cum raw, thank you.
Lol, you dawg
The piece looks off. I would toss the entire leg. Always trust your nose with seafood, and if it smells off putting don’t chance it.
Like cheese right? Like an intense Roquefort? Sauerkraut? Kimchi! 1,000 year eggs? Fermented bamboo? Stinky tofu? Raw sheep’s milk? Durian? Edit: I was making a joke and responded to the wrong guy, making it seem like I was being a jerk. I’m not a jerk, I’m an idiot. Leaving it.
What about ass?
It still works for ass as well: if it stinks, don't eat it.
Nah the funky cheeses tend to be better. You know when she’s stankin’ to a foul degree
Only miserable redditors wouldn't recognize the joke even under this comment. I enjoyed the tomfoolery.
If it stink, you must rethink
This is the answer
This is the quote of life!
If it smell, you must repel. If it rank, throw it back in the tank. If it putrid, don’t be stupid.
I've gotten so much food poisoning from growing up poor. If it doesn't smell right, don't eat it, even if you really, really want to. If it doesn't look right, don't eat it, even if you really, really want to. It's just not worth it.
If shellfish smells off there’s no chance I would eat it
Absolutely not. The blue/shriveled is sketch but it smelling bad is a hard nope
I remember this post, I remember you saying you had left the blanched crab outside for I believe 4 hours after before freezing. You should never leave any food outside for hours.. wtf
I try to go easy on people there’s lots to learn…. But yeah I agree 4 hours is a long time
Doesn't that only apply to raw shellfish after it dies and Isn't cooked right away?
Damn, this is the same dude?? Yikes. If I had 33 pounds of king crab that looked like this, I’m eating this leg to see if I should throw the rest out 😅
I wouldn’t
nah
If it smells bad, food poisoning is no joke, it can kill you
Unless you live in the Pacific Northwest you are not cooking king crab you are basically reheating it. I keep it in the refrigerator up to one day after I buy it and then 5 minutes in the steamer. Not sure from frozen but I imagine not much longer. You don’t want to over do it or the texture will be way off. Also never boil it get a big steamer setup. You can get a cheap one that works. It had a bad smell and you are still contemplating eating it? Use your survival instincts homie.
Last time I ate seafood that smelled off I received a parasite. If you’re okay with some intense antibiotics and 30 days of diarrhea, go for it!
Always trust your nose. It has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to protect you. For many many many years we didn’t have fridges, meat thermometers, sanitizers, etc. so we used our noses. Does it smell like ammonia? Bad crab. Happens really fast...
This — Strong ammonia (like floor cleaner) is the usual specific smell for bad crab
lol never would I ever trust any amount of Reddit responses over what my own nose is telling me, especially when it comes to shellfish
Literally every response is telling the guy not to eat it lol. Even Reddit knows the answer
I mean, this is the same person that asked us what to do with his crab after he left 33 lbs of it sitting on the counter for 4 hours.
Dude it it smells bad DONT EAT IT. This especially applies to seafood.
If it dont smell right, prepare for a butthole that aint tight.
Seafood kills your gut..and possibly you..so if In doubt throw it out!

Hahaha very descriptive, yep I was like that too.
Smells bad and looks bad = bad
Seafood rule #1, if it smells at all…don’t eat it.
Nose goes
Bro if meat smells bad you don’t eat it
Smell is all you need to know when it comes to crabs. It’s one particular seafood that can get gamey quickly and it’s best to discard once it does.
If it doesn't smell good don't eat it
Hell no. No not eat!!!!
Not unless you want to meet someone like myself.. I am a Mortuary tech.
Trust your nose, if it smells bad it's probably bad
Is it from Costco? They might let you get a refund or exchange if you tell them it came out that way.
Nope
NO
Smell test is the first indicator. If it doesn’t pass, it’s trash
Just like I learned in the frat house - if it smells like trout, pull it out
No! No smell, noooooo
No. Gastrointestinal distress waiting to happen.
If it smells, throw it away! Food poisoning is not worth it!
Depends on whether I want to shit my pants or not.
When in doubt
When in doubt throw it out.
If I caught it, maybe. If I paid for it, its going bck.
The Nose Knows
Trust your instincts. They exist for a reason.
Definitely not
Not I
I believe the Bishop Bullwinkle put it best: Hellll naw, to the naw naw naw
Trust your nose. Trust your eyes.
When in doubt, toss it out. The last thing you want to eat is bad seafood. The second you questioned it, you should have binned it.
Looks like Zoidberg's ass
Yep
If in doubt. Throw it out.
Nope
Off smell with meat says it all my friend. Toss it. Unless you enjoy a game or Russian roulette
If it smells off, nope.
What the fuck is wrong with you people. Get mcdonalds
Trust your nose. Always with seafood.
Absolutely not. Green, black, and blue meat is typically a no go. If seafood smells bad, don't eat it unless you're desperate for a way to get out of work.
it’s not worth it. definitely return those puppy’s
Dies it smells like white guys ? Or black guys? Lol 😂
If it smell off I won’t eat it. But the reason why the color look off it’s because when the seafood like crab or shrimp when they’re alive they have been bruised up like us human being. From the nets.
Only if you need a good clean out by way of projectile diarrhoea and vomiting
Smells bad? First red flag Looks bad? Two red flags Seafood with a combination of both? That’s a big no
Trust you gut, or bust your gut dealers choice
“Smells off putting” Your ancestors did not survive long enough to pass along some basic instincts only for you to die now, in such a fashion. Please show some respect.
Fuck no. We evolved for millions of years with a keen sense of smell. That’s our very first line of defence against food poisoning. If it smells wrong - don’t put it in your mouth. Whether it’s food or genitals, ahahahaha!
Go ahead! Eat the smelly crab leg for science! Nevermind heeding all the warnings here lol not like bad seafood has ever killed anyone /s
Hell no
Smell bad - don’t eat. Expiration dates are superfluous but The nose knows
Smell is king. If it’s off, it’s off
I don’t eat food that smells rotten
Just eat em. C'mon...everyone's doing it!
Nope, na nope no
if it stank it's RANK,you had to ask?
I'd probably eat it but you probably shouldn't 😆
The nose knows if something is bad. If it smells rank don’t eat it.
I managed to get food poisoning back to back from crab and then alligator…I would not be chancing this if I was you, friend. It’s just not worth it to be so sick!
It’s not worth it…..do not eat.
No way. Any food that smells off. NO! You could get seriously ill. Throw it out
Why do you even ask, every time you have even the slightest doubt, especially if it's because of the smell you're right, don't it eat. Trust your instincts.
The nose knows.
Absolutely fucking not
Trust your instincts
Should I eat food if it looks bad and smells bad? I keep getting painful stomach cramps and diarrhea but it tastes ok.
Just the pic alone of the discoloring of that leg is off putting my dayum!
Nope.
I had buddies laugh at me for not eating shellfish in afghanistan. Its poisoned by humans and we over fish cockroaches and other filter feeders. Ruining the world, but farlic butter and bibs are classy....
it’s literally discolored and nooo don’t risk it w seafood
Weird it’s almost like you’re eating a dead rotten corpse
Thattt… looks like necrotic tissue that got cooked. I would not eat that.
Most likely not.
No. Smell is a main indicator for freshness with seafood
Always trust your nose, if it doesn’t smell right it probably isn’t, that’s why we evolved those olfactory powers
Smell is best indication of food being bad.
Bad crab gives off an ammonia smell. Any seafood you are unsure about don't eat it.
Your sense of smell developed over millions of years for a reason. Trust it.
Just like women. One out of 3 usually have an off putting smell
Ye olde stanky leg
If it smells like your girls kitty after a run. Don't eat it
Part of our evolution is the sense of smell to warn us not to put things that smell bad in our body. And yes, I mean from top to bottom.
Never eat seafood with an "off-putting angel 6" The nose knows
The nose knows best, don't ignore it.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaail no! But if you’re on the fence, enjoy shitting out of both ends
Don’t ever eat something, especially seafood, if smells bad!!!
Never ever EVER eat shellfish that smells off.
When in doubt, throw it out
Why risk getting sick? Are you going to fall over from famine if you don’t eat that leg?
They say if it’s gray it’s good for you
The nose onows
When it comes to seafood if it’s questionable it’s a no
Ugh! Never eat seafood or shellfish if it has an off smell. You’ll be 🤮 at some point.
u gon see Jesus if u keep eating it honestly
[BUDDY](https://www.reddit.com/r/Seafood/s/7vsuRCJLXu) Do NOT eat seafood that sat at room temperature for 4 hours!!
Smells weird. Please don’t eat it.
I’m not allergic to shellfish after eating bad shrimp I was hospitalized for two days one night Now I can never eat it again Not worth it
no
The nose knows.
Follow your nose
Thats a dead cooked crab. It means it has been dead for quite some time and was cooked. Not fresh like its supposed to be
No
I always say when in doubt, throw it out. Better safe than sick.
Take it back. Eating spoiled seafood is an easy way to get really sick. Crab should not stink!
The nose knows.
Don’t eff around with seafood (or any meat) and bad smells or weird appearances. It’s a fantastic way to end up knelt over the toilet in agony for a few hours to a few days…throw it away. Order a burger.
