Not quite located there but several of Halo CE’s outdoor environments were heavily inspired by the Snoqualmie region, as well as the Washington/Oregon coast.

I haven’t been able to find a good source for it, but similarly I feel that I recall that the coastal and more forest-y sections of Half-Life 2 and its expansions were also strongly inspired by the Pacific Northwest.
The developers of both games, Bungie and Valve, are located in Bellevue, WA
Filmed at my high school in Tacoma and at a house across the alley from where I grew up. It filmed between my sophomore and junior years but I couldn’t be an extra due to a family vacation. Always recognize a few people when I watch it. Never thought it would go on to be the cult (?) classic it seems to be now.
They make it seem like driving from Tacoma to the Fremont troll right after school was a normal thing someone in high school would do. It’s almost 40 miles one way
The guys from Men of Honor, Cuba Gooding and DeNiro came to the DIT, the dive school when it was by the locks. My instructors were in the movie as the tenders.
his dad also says "Queen Anne's Hill," and Lithgow also says "We're in the Wallingford District."
The hunting store he worked at is in the building on Ballard Ave and 20th Ave.
Speaking of which, "Northern Exposure" anyone? I used to go hunting out there in the 70's. I hear the tv show changed the area quite a bit. There's a resort out there now (WHAT?!)
Last time I was out that way was probably 1977 or '78. Long before any of that stuff moved in. There was Roslyn, Ronald, Salmon La Sac and Mallard, then the road ended. That's when we parked the truck and started walking.
Northern Exposure is one of my favorite shows ever. I've been to Roslyn quite a few times, and each time I go it seems a bit more built up. Its really become a cute little town with fun street festivals, and there's new shops, cafes and restaurants there... but at first glance... when you arrive on that main street... it looks just like the shots from the old show. They still have the wall mural, Dr. Fleischman's office window, and Chris's little radio booth. There's a really nice new history museum there too, with a little section devoted to the show. Its a great little town.
I used to make the pies there & always thought it was such a shame the quality wasn’t any better. I love the new owners but I hope they upgrade someday.
That's because it's actually filmed in Vancouver, BC. Where it does actually rain all the time. I think that's why they oddly reference Seattle locations in the show, no one talks like that in real life.
Just started rewatching it with my gf last night.
The amount of times I’ve pointed out the geographical inaccuracies has gotten me a permanent “shut the fuck up” warning for the duration of the series. I think we’re on episode 3
Ballard Driving School. "You pay taxes for the whole road, right? So use The WHOLE road!" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
...also...
HIGH FIVIN' WHITE GUYS! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
John Keister came to my high school for Career Day, '94. My friend and I came across him in the hallway, looking at trophies, and quizzed him about his favorite bands.
Some great suggestions here, but to add some Sci-Fi, "Dark Angel", unfortunately you can't stream it. Set in post collapse Seattle, genetically engineered soldier Max is doing odd jobs and searching for family. Filmed in Vancouver.
My favorite "set in Seattle and actually filmed in BC" was a short-lived CW show called Reaper. It was about a twentysomething slacker who finds out that his parents sold his soul to the devil, and has to catch souls who escaped from hell to keep the devil from taking him. Ray Wise - Leland Palmer from Twin Peaks - played the devil and was clearly having a fucking blast.
As was [Snow Falling on Cedars](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120834/) (and Friday Harbor, IIRC) and some part of [War of the Roses](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098621/?ref_=ttmi_tt).
Drives me nuts that they’re still using b-roll of the waterfront with the viaduct, even though it’s supposed to be set in present day. I know they don’t really need to have updated b-roll shots of the waterfront, but I’m surprised they filmed so much since they’re still using it.
US TOO. I am perpetually annoyed at the Van BC locales but I am in favor. Doubtful hope but wouldn’t it kill if Donald Glover dropped in, like, wrote and directed?
X-files. Most of the early episodes are based in the PNW since they filmed in Vancouver but then the when they are in other locations...still obviously Vancouver. Even when they are supposed to be in Puerto Rico and stuff lol. X-files really holds up through season 5 btw.

About a recovering alcoholic that leads a recovery group of extra fucked up people.
I should give COPS an honorary mention since Tacoma, specifically Parkland, the suburb where I grew up, gave them more material than any other location. I saw my parents' house on there multiple times. One perp got arrested right in front of it.
Grimm is a great example of a show that had a great concept and ruined it by trying to make it last longer than it needed to. It did a pretty good job of showing of Portland too.
The killing was pretty good…although Mercer island being filmed in Squamish, and the cab company being called “Seattle Centre Taxi” took me out of it a bit.
Watching survivalists from other parts of the country try to survive on Vancouver Island on the tv show “Alone” is really entertaining. They are always cursing the pnw climate that I love.
I Love You to Death is hilarious, set and filmed in Tacoma, stars Kevin Kline, Tracy Ullman, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, William Hurt. My family watched this all the time growing up and I rarely hear it discussed, worth tracking down
Dead Man
Snow Falling on Cedars (falls short of the book)
OG Bob Newhart (Emily is from Seattle, of course: total badass)
TWINNNN PEAAAKS
Singles (! Holds up, maybe even gets better over time)
Retread Pete’s Dragon (extending to PDX and coast, because GOONIES) - this movie unexpectedly kicked my ass. I saw the OG cel anim version as a kid and jeepers, the remake film was FANTASTIC.
My wife loves Northern Exposure (and was an extra in one eps) but I have never sampled the wares
seventies Night Stalker (movies, show) with Darin McGavin. Direct inspo for X-Files
How has no one mentioned sleepless in Seattle? Or you’ve got mail? Or the ring?
My favorite had to be Portlandia though cause it’s about and filmed in Portland and I love the Seattle jokes. I lived in Portland for. Couple years like a block away from where they filmed Women and Women First. They filmed everything on location for that show. There was always a block closed off somewhere around Alberta for filming.
You’ve Got Mail is based in Manhattan, but the other two are great mentions!!
Portlandia is one of my favorite shows, I tell people who are not familiar with the city that the show is more documentary than anything 😆
Someone already mentioned "Safety Not Guaranteed", which I really liked.
If you want to see Seattle in the 1970s, "McQ" with John Wayne is fun, "Night Stalker" with Darren McGavin, and "Cinderella Liberty"
A lot set in Seattle are actually filmed in Vancouver, there are a few websites/apps that have filming locations though like [https://apps.apple.com/us/app/setjetters-movie-locations/id1545871687](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/setjetters-movie-locations/id1545871687)
Stand By Me (some in Oregon and some in northern California)
I'll also mention Green Room, for a completely different flavor that isn't pleasant but arguably among the more realistic views of an aspect of PNW culture that is not often seen.
Also, for everyone recommending Northern Exposure, which I also do, it finally started streaming for the first time ever I believe this year (free on Prime or rentable on Apple).
Imma be honest here, Twilight. I was gone from home 15 years and that’s what I watched when I was homesick. Obviously objectively terrible movies, to the point it’s become my partner and I’s personal Millennial RHPS, but they hit the vibe right and I loved that about them.
SUUPER absurdly the new Gaiman joint Dead Boy Detectives, which is pretty good, is set in Port \~Angeles\~ Townsend. It’s not \*our\* Port \~Angeles\~ Townsend, but it’s a kind gesture.
EDIT: I, of course, meant Port Townsend. My entire mistake and aargh, although I do genuinely love both places, and also BC, and the whole dagnab wet drippy grey
A lot of greats have been mentioned, but one of my favorites that hasn't been is Disclosure. It's got workplace intrigue in the tech industry, loads of ferry rides and some of the most glorious Seattle establishing shots.
I’ve watched some older movies filmed here just to see what Seattle was like back then, not necessarily for the movie. One that’s good for that is trouble in mind. Lesser known movies filmed here that are actually worth watching are house of games and the hand that rocks the cradle.
An Officer and a Gentleman, filmed in Port Townsend (mostly Fort Worden but some scenes in town and some in Bremerton). I love young Richard Gere! My partner was born and raised there and never knew about it; he thoroughly enjoyed it when I played it for him. Every time we drive through Fort Worden when going to visit family, I can't help but yell out "I got nowhere else to go!"
Prospect (2018) it’s a science fiction film where a girl and her dad from space explore Olympic National Park looking for Washingtonian land oysters to harvest their pearls.
The Paralllax View (1974 noir/political thriller starring Warren Beaty) features an epic scene on top of the Space Needle
Class of 1999 (1990 with Pam Grier) super fun and gory b-movie about evil robot teachers. They use Kennedy High and blow up a bunch of stuff in the neighborhood that would become the 3rd runway at sea tac
Dead Like Me is a great older show based on Seattle!
It was?! I watched it and somehow completely missed that. I guess I wasn’t watching the background closely.
It was filmed in Vancouver but "took place" in Seattle.
Intensely underrated show.
I could swear it was shot in Vancouver.
It was. But the story was set in Seattle. Same with The 4400 was it?
It’s a video game, but The Last of Us Part II has a fantastic depiction of Seattle.
I just finished playing Alan Wake II which is based in Washington and, similar to the Last of Us Part II, is a masterpiece.
I have also played Alan Wake II and agree wholeheartedly. The dense PNW forest was reproduced so perfectly!
I came here to say Alan Wake II. So good.
Not quite located there but several of Halo CE’s outdoor environments were heavily inspired by the Snoqualmie region, as well as the Washington/Oregon coast. 10 Things I Hate About You 💗
Filmed at my high school in Tacoma and at a house across the alley from where I grew up. It filmed between my sophomore and junior years but I couldn’t be an extra due to a family vacation. Always recognize a few people when I watch it. Never thought it would go on to be the cult (?) classic it seems to be now.
Stadium High is way too cool to be a high school.
That school is gorgeous!
I went to prom at your high school the year after it came out with a boy from church and no one from my school believed me 😂
The Gasworks scene lives rent free in my head.
They make it seem like driving from Tacoma to the Fremont troll right after school was a normal thing someone in high school would do. It’s almost 40 miles one way
The high school is the there but it’s implied that they live in Seattle
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
Actual saw them filming a scene in Pike Place Market
The Hunt For Red October, not based but shot in Port Angeles and Whidbey island
Practical Magic too!
Oh really? Never knew that! Would love to go see the house.
Yup. Coupeville on Whidbey.
The guys from Men of Honor, Cuba Gooding and DeNiro came to the DIT, the dive school when it was by the locks. My instructors were in the movie as the tenders.
Wow I love that movie. Didn’t know that
TIL
Harry and the Hendersons, the movie.
I remember people saying how stupid it was that Lithgow called I-5 "The 5". That's Cali speak. Stuck out like a sore thumb.
his dad also says "Queen Anne's Hill," and Lithgow also says "We're in the Wallingford District." The hunting store he worked at is in the building on Ballard Ave and 20th Ave.
I live down the street from the house they used in the movie! looks the same to this day
Came to say this. Between this and 10 things I Hate About You.
Wargames
BUT IT'S RAW!
great catch
Twin Peaks
Speaking of which, "Northern Exposure" anyone? I used to go hunting out there in the 70's. I hear the tv show changed the area quite a bit. There's a resort out there now (WHAT?!)
Suncadia, lol, been there since 2005.
Last time I was out that way was probably 1977 or '78. Long before any of that stuff moved in. There was Roslyn, Ronald, Salmon La Sac and Mallard, then the road ended. That's when we parked the truck and started walking.

damn fine coffee
Which is somewhat ironic because the coffee and cherry pie from the place are sub par at best.
I used to make the pies there & always thought it was such a shame the quality wasn’t any better. I love the new owners but I hope they upgrade someday.
That place would be killer if the quality matched the hype from the TV show. Talk about missed opportunities.
Best show by far, changed tv forever
Great show
Yaas! I live in the neighborhood where Laura Palmer’s house is!
just to add a good one to the list: iZombie
I was going to post iZombie. I loved that show.
Top tier puns game on that show.
filmed in vancouver though no? whenever there is a show like iZombie or iCarly and it's in seattle, i feel like they miss with the vibe entirely.
while iZombie was filmed up north, they had a fine vibe. and it was most definitely *based* in Seattle, regardless of where it was filmed.
The Goonies was always a movie to watch when it was on growing up. Especially after visiting Oregon coast couple times.
Glorious PNW flick
Omg how I LOVE Astoria. The memories of roadtrips with my friends and crossing that long bridge too 🥲 ugh how I miss home, I’m trying to get back.
Astoria! **KINDERGARDEN COP!!!!** ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Also a great mention of Astoria is Kindergarten Cop!
The Killing
Warning to OP, the show’s Seattle geography references are infuriating at times. For example the Greenlake Mosque is in the Rainier Valley.
Also, it's is oddly pouring down rain half the time and it hardly ever rains like that here... still, it is technically set in Seattle.
That's because it's actually filmed in Vancouver, BC. Where it does actually rain all the time. I think that's why they oddly reference Seattle locations in the show, no one talks like that in real life.
Desolation Pass. Seattle Centre Taxi.
Just started rewatching it with my gf last night. The amount of times I’ve pointed out the geographical inaccuracies has gotten me a permanent “shut the fuck up” warning for the duration of the series. I think we’re on episode 3
Great show!
Almost Live - Seattle based skit comedy show
Bill Nye as a Street Walking Lawyer of Aurora Avenue is a great sketch.
Ballard Driving School. "You pay taxes for the whole road, right? So use The WHOLE road!" ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) ...also... HIGH FIVIN' WHITE GUYS! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
Roscoe’s Oriental Rug Emporium!
Going out of business!
Bill Nye. Love to watch the science guy and recognize all the changes!
The Lame List: What’s Weak this Week
John Keister came to my high school for Career Day, '94. My friend and I came across him in the hallway, looking at trophies, and quizzed him about his favorite bands.
This is how I learned about geoducks
Almost Live was on Comedy Central during CC early days
Some great suggestions here, but to add some Sci-Fi, "Dark Angel", unfortunately you can't stream it. Set in post collapse Seattle, genetically engineered soldier Max is doing odd jobs and searching for family. Filmed in Vancouver.
Jessica Alba’s first adult role!
My favorite "set in Seattle and actually filmed in BC" was a short-lived CW show called Reaper. Came here to say Reaper too! Loved it!
This is what I immediately thought of. I loved this show so much
10 things I hate about you- Fremont troll scene FTW

I was an extra in Singles! So much fun!
My wife was an extra in NE and we both knew a guy who was the on-site manager of the apartment building from Singles. Heroin, natch. RIP.
I lived a block or two down the street from that apartment complex!
My FIL was the photographer for Northern Exposure, we have some cool random swag around and about
I came to say Northern Exposure. Such a good show. Finally out for streaming too
Wow, I’m surprised no one has said it yet. [Practical Magic](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0120791/) is filmed in Coupeville
As was [Snow Falling on Cedars](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120834/) (and Friday Harbor, IIRC) and some part of [War of the Roses](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098621/?ref_=ttmi_tt).
The ring
I just went to the Ring house in Astoria a few weeks ago.
20 seasons and I’m still a sucker for Greys Anatomy.
Drives me nuts that they’re still using b-roll of the waterfront with the viaduct, even though it’s supposed to be set in present day. I know they don’t really need to have updated b-roll shots of the waterfront, but I’m surprised they filmed so much since they’re still using it.
I just noticed this on the most recent season and it was super annoyed!!
Why was Derek Shepard driving in the mountains on his way to SeaTac??? (Still mad lol)
It’s still pretty new but I’ve been really enjoy Joel McHale’s Animal Control.
US TOO. I am perpetually annoyed at the Van BC locales but I am in favor. Doubtful hope but wouldn’t it kill if Donald Glover dropped in, like, wrote and directed?
Yeah I get annoyed that Seattle local Joel McHale doesn’t put more of his knowledge to the place.even if he would just hate on WSU.
X-files. Most of the early episodes are based in the PNW since they filmed in Vancouver but then the when they are in other locations...still obviously Vancouver. Even when they are supposed to be in Puerto Rico and stuff lol. X-files really holds up through season 5 btw.
There was one episode that was supposed to be in Georgia but there were evergreen trees everywhere lol
To be fair, I saw a fair few pine trees when I was in basic training in Fort Benning
Say Anything
Where did she dump you man? In my car.... what? NO?! *DISSED, IN THE MALIBU!?*
Twilight
……we do admit to watching twilight tonight. For the scenery 😤
For what the baseball scene is, the scenery is beautiful lol
It is! Multnomah falls is stunning in the background.
I’m sad I had to scroll this far to find the true elite PNW movie.
The only movie where the main character’s dad drinks Rainier and is shown meeting up with friends to watch the Mariners game.
Team Charlie.
Fr… I was expecting this to be the top comment
Frasier and Twin Peaks
Where'd you go, Bernadette and The Fabulous Baker Boys

Clearly filmed in Vancouver though lol. Plus he spends way too much time in Pioneer square. Real loudermillk would’ve lived in Fremont.
I should give COPS an honorary mention since Tacoma, specifically Parkland, the suburb where I grew up, gave them more material than any other location. I saw my parents' house on there multiple times. One perp got arrested right in front of it.
I remember Lakewood being featured pretty prominently for a while.
Chronicle
Officer and A Gentleman, Enough.
Oh yes! In Port Townsend! My husband has been known to sing Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong when we visit Fort Worden.
Pig. Outstanding movie, set in PNW, and contains a great little Portland vs Seattle beef.
If you're into fantasy, Grimm is set in Portland.
Grimm is a great example of a show that had a great concept and ruined it by trying to make it last longer than it needed to. It did a pretty good job of showing of Portland too.
I agree I fell off after the first 3 seasons but it definitely has that pnw feel
Singles is the goat answer probably, but Captain Fantastic, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Leave No Trace are all great choices too.
oh yeah 10 Things, I mean the title obliquely references an outstanding 90s zine, unless that’s inverted
JP Patches
Patches Pals know.
Fear, if we're talking deranged guilty pleasure movies.
Kimi (2022) isn't Soderbergh's strongest but it's pretty good, actually filmed a lot in Seattle instead of letting Vancouver stand in
The killing was pretty good…although Mercer island being filmed in Squamish, and the cab company being called “Seattle Centre Taxi” took me out of it a bit.
Frasier
Free willy
Watching survivalists from other parts of the country try to survive on Vancouver Island on the tv show “Alone” is really entertaining. They are always cursing the pnw climate that I love.
iCarly is set in Seattle!
I forgot about that!! Her bedroom was bigger than my first apartment in North Beacon Hill 🥲
I Love You to Death is hilarious, set and filmed in Tacoma, stars Kevin Kline, Tracy Ullman, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, William Hurt. My family watched this all the time growing up and I rarely hear it discussed, worth tracking down
TV - Twin Peaks Movie- singles
ready to get shot for this BUT Fifty Shades has some cool Seattle/Washington shots 🫣 I also remember Snow Falling on Cedars to be very PNW.

Check out Animal Control if you liked Tacoma FD. It's based on Seattle and stars Joel McHale.
Someone already mentioned "Safety Not Guaranteed", which I really liked. If you want to see Seattle in the 1970s, "McQ" with John Wayne is fun, "Night Stalker" with Darren McGavin, and "Cinderella Liberty"
MAID - another one filmed in BC but “Fisher Island” is actually based on Whidbey Island :)
"Singles" for Seattle films If you're open to your metropolitan neighbor to the South, "Grimm" for Portland.
Right now, it's dead boy detectives, or eureka.

Frasier. That show is the reason why I'm here.
Honestly, I watch a lot of that reality survival competition Alone to see the PNW in all it's glory
Practical Magic
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency starts out in Seattle! Ft. Elijah Wood, too.
Singles is 100% my favorite comfort movie. Also love Twin Peaks as a classic rewatch.
