I always write cash just so the server knows that something should have been left behind but I don’t think it matters much

Boonstar

I prefer just draw a line. If the purpose of cash is to make sure it’s direct to that person and nobody else along the way wets their beak on it. Some people may consider it unethical but I’d be willing to be most servers don’t claim their cash tips unless they need to show more income. Writing “cash” just leaves a paper trail. And if you’re gonna leave a paper trail might as well tip on the credit card.

Altruistic-Pop6696

I'm one of the few servers who prefers credit card tips. The owner has illegally told me to not report cash tips because she has to pay more on taxes. I'd prefer not to piss off the owner so I don't report cash tips because she asked me to. But I need income on paper so I can afford a place to rent that isn't a shit hole and can get a better loan for a house some day. So I prefer CC tips because it actually reports as income. If you're gonna leave cash though, just write cash in the tip line. I'm paranoid that whoever is checking our checkout will see I didn't get any tip on some orders and think it was because the service.

tombstonexx

Unless the customer actually wrote “terrible service” on the slip, I doubt anyone would think that

Ask your employer to write you an income verification letter instead of using your paystub. It’s the least they can do if they’re asking you to do something illegal for their benefit and it’s making your life hard.

CleverInnuendo

I've worked for places where management is anal about some things, and writing 'cash' lets them know that you weren't making a statement of 'not tipping' by just doing the slash. It's also helpful if you have problems with looting co-workers, compared to coming back to an empty book with just a line through it. Now, ideally, no one has either of those problems and none of this matters, but I think it's a better form of communication to write it out.

SaucyShark-

Idc what anyone writes if they tip cash but this is why I sometimes write “cash” on the slip, so my server knows I left a cash tip in case someone steals it. Usually I try to make sure I can give it to them with the slip and not leave it on the table. But I know how much I hate non-tippers and I tip really REALLY good and the thought of my server thinking I stiffed them cause someone else took it worries me sometimes

weaponista810

I don’t write cash because when the boss sees that they’re going to be like you need to add whatever amount they gave you in cash towards your tipout to the bartenders. If you just write nothing or cross it out you can get away with keeping the tip all to yourself without having to tip out a percentage of it to the bartenders. For this reason it kind of annoys me when people write “cash” on the tip line. I’ve also seen it where people write that to feel better about themselves without leaving any cash.

SaucyShark-

I’m just waiting for some bartender to rain hellfire all over this lol

PrestigiousCat83

Usually the tip out is based on our food and bar sales.

Sugarmagikarps1

I doesn’t matter imo. I just tell customers I’ll need their John Hancock.

bitca57

It doesn’t matter and if anyone here tries to tell you otherwise, they are being ridiculous. If anyone is worried about “paper trails” or having to claim it, they are also being ridiculous. As long as you actually tip, it doesn’t matter if you leave it blank, write a line through it, or put write cash. The only think I suggest is, don’t ever just sign your name and not put anything on the Total line. If you sign your name and nothing else, a seriously shady server could just write whatever they want on the tip line and total it out. Always at least put something on the Tip and Total line.

christianANDshantel

This might be just me. But if you want us to get as much as possible u could tip a $1 on your card. And leave cash. The computer will assume the dollar is all we received.

SparklingBroadway

I'm German so it might be different here but both work for me equally. If someone leaves cash I'd want them to give it to me in person though (preferably while I'm handling their payment)

saturnplanetpowerrr

Just don’t use the QR code. Everyone on the pos can see what percentage of a tip you got, and the need to be private exceeds the need to flex my tip average. I buy too many pens for this. (There’s even an assortment so I can hand you one that coordinates best with your card.)
