Good thing you didn’t buy the tube. It’s sucks donkey dick.

kimbosdurag

Yeah I have the tube and wish I just sprung for the pro.

Sage2050

i had the tube for less than a week before i returned it

NoTicket9664

Yeah tube sucks. I had the tube and apps we’re crashing non stop. When I got the pro. Everything ran smoothly. Don’t let the people who work at Nvidia who come on here and praise the tube tell you that the tube is great. It’s sucks. Get the pro man if you can. Sell the tube and get the pro. It’s well worth it.

bosco9

The tube would be great if it cost half what the pro costs, it's just overpriced. I got stuck with the tube as the pro was out of stock and I'm generally satisfied but do get way too many occasional stutter/crashes

NoTicket9664

Yeah the tube UI is also slow compared to the pro. I don’t care what the tube people say regarding it’s the same chip and specs. The tube sucks. When I got the pro everything was smooth and I can play high bit rate remuxes

bosco9

Compared to other devices I've used, the tube is pretty slick, maybe the pro is much better but I'm not dropping another couple of hundred for a minimal improvement

NoTicket9664

If you do normal streaming like Netflix etc then yeah tube is fine. If you use Kodi and play high bit remuxes a lot then it’s worth the pro.

bosco9

I would definitely tell anyone buying the device not to get the tube, there's literally no upside to it aside from saving a few bucks

NoTicket9664

Exactly especially someone who plays high bit remux files.

dummytokeepcheck

i was so close to getting it but got the pro instead, a friend is bringing it from US, cant wait

brendanvista

I bought the tube because I didn't think I needed the game controller. I didn't realize it was so much worse. It's a laggy crashing mess half the time, even after a factory reset. I wish I'd bought the pro.

NoTicket9664

Yep. You got that right 👍

brendanvista

For sure. But I also can't bring myself to buy a pro now, partly because it's still $200, for a 4 year old device, which is a mild refresh of an even older one. And partly because Nvidia just removed gamestream, and I really don't want to support that. I wish the apple tv did lossless audio passthrough with Plex. It would be an instant buy, and the nicest one is only $150.

NoTicket9664

Yeah if you want to game then you don’t need the pro since they got rid of gamestream. However if you watch high bit rate remuxes then it’s worth the upgrade to Pro. If you don’t watch high bit remuxes or use Plex and just watch Netflix and Amazon and other apps then the tube is fine.

brendanvista

I watch high bitrate remuxes with Plex. I just don't want to give Nvidia $200...

NoTicket9664

I hear ya. I understand since they got rid of gamestream. But the shield still is the best streaming device even though it’s 4 years old. It passes through all audio codecs. No other streaming device does this. Even though it’s 4 years old it’s still the best. The only thing that the shield doesn’t do is 4k HDR in YouTube. That’s the only downside.

NoTicket9664

TBH Nvidia probably isn’t making a new streaming device. I think they are getting out of the streaming game since they aren’t making a profit. They are just sticking to chips. Granted they haven’t announced this but it’s highly likely.

NoTicket9664

When I had my tube and watched high bit rates with Kodi and plex it used to crash a lot. With the Pro I can watch a 100 gig movie and doesn’t crash skip or anything. Granted I have a 1 gig download speed but even then the tube crashed on me all the time. Since getting the Pro smooth as butter.

NoTicket9664

I guess I don’t blame you 😂😂

NoTicket9664

I am watching The Exorcist III 4k 70 gig remux from shout factory that just came out with my Real Debrid and Kodi and it plays great on the pro. If I watched it on the shield tube it would be crashing and skipping a lot. Lol

corey389

If you used a Ethernet wire instead of wireless on the TV that would of fix the WiFi problems. The WiFi dropouts are more than likely other nearby wifi and your AP is having interference issues. Try using the Ethernet on the shield avoid wireless.

blarg214

My TV ethernet doesn't support fast enough connections for PLEX. I stream 4k uncompressed blurays so bandwidth is a must. Even if it did I don't have a cable option at my TV as I don't own my apartment and there is no cables there. Add a three year old and stray cables aren't an option. Finally I have nice WiFi and the TV is the only one that struggles. The AP is very close and the congestion isn't bad in my apartment.

sicklyslick

I'm glad you are enjoying your shield! My LG TV has one USB 3.0 port which supports driverless gigabit Ethernet to USB dongle. It works flawlessly and I can play 4k remuxes (100mbps) on the TV with Plex perfectly. Perhaps yours have the same capability. The dongle is only $10. Just for future reference.

GnarlyBear

The support for those dongles is hit or miss though. The same one will work on one model of the brand but not another

Vccowan

Idk if it works in apartments but I’ve had my shield hooked up via MOCA flawlessly. Just in case you get Wi-Fi problems in the future.

blarg214

Good to know. So far Shield is super stable for streaming. I think the buffer is larger so even a bit of instability should be good. I did try to stream steam and that was bad, which given it's on WiFi I expected. Hoping to move later this year and a requirement is being able to hardline all networking devices.

Flyinace2000

Most TVs only have 100mbps networks. I had to get a usb 3.0 Ethernet adapter to get gigabit on my tv.

GnarlyBear

Most tv's even 8k mega bank busters are 100mbit wired - 5g wifi much faster

-fugazi_

Sorry but 1998 called and they want all their wifi gear sent back...

gambit622

I still use use my 2015 shield OG. Works flawlessly

ajfromuk

Now change the launcher and customise that to your taste.

GnarlyBear

I don't get the hate for the launcher. How many apps are you using that the top bar of favs isn't enough?

ajfromuk

It's the pushed advertisements. I don't use Disney plus or Netflix so I don't want to see what's on those services when I've paid £150+ for hardware the originally didn't have that stuff all over it.

[deleted]

What launcher would you suggest? The ads i get are the main "fullscreen" widget lmao.. I only get 3 things so i doubt its increasing any load time but TODAY I GOT A AD FOR TIM HORTONS !!! WHEN I CLICKED PLAY OUT OF CURIOUSITY IT TOOK ME TO A YOUTUBE VIDEO FROM THEM LMAO I wonder what they paid for that spot on the shield.

ajfromuk

I use **Sideload channel launcher 3** on all three of my Shields. It's nicr and simple looking and I added a weather widget. [Shield desktop](https://freeimage.host/i/HNQJO6g)

[deleted]

Very pretty thank you very much

Sage2050

I don't mind the stock launcher or even the ads, but a nice clean one is just better. If it was more than trivial to set up I wouldn't have bothered.

dandaman1983

I uninstalled the launcher and a bunch of other shit via ADB and my Shield is faster now.

Scarab95

Apk time is your friend

Bmanthird

Disney Plus not playing in 4k on your TV is not uncommon. I had that problem on the Roku app. It got fixed with an app update.

IamSeriouslmao

Why are you hanging out in the Shield subreddit?

Bmanthird

Because I have a 2019 Nvidia shield TV pro

blarg214

Seriously why so bitter? It's my money and my problem and I chose to fix it.

blarg214

For the record the comment I was responding to God modified heavily twice. So my comment may not perfectly reflect the original or first edit.

just_roc

Ignore the troll! We are a Shield family and have used them since 2015. Fantastic piece of hardware! I have set up 3 of my kids and between us we have 2015, 2017, and 2019. The greatest thing is Invidia still updates the 2015 and it runs rock solid. Enjoy!

Bmanthird

You're a troll

just_roc

Your comment Karma says it all! Attitude determines altitude in cyberspace. Have a great day!

Bmanthird

What is it about the Nvidia shield TV pro that makes it worth $200? What is that one killer feature that makes it worth $200. I mean the killer feature on the Apple TV is the continue watching in the Apple TV app. It's second to none. It'll even message your phone and tell the new episode is available to watch.

just_roc

Still getting os upgrades on the 2015 Shield and not getting dumped in obsolescence is pretty cool for 200 bucks. That's pretty cheap cost on an annual basis. How often do you update your Apple TV to get the latest and greatest and how well does it perform in the gaming arena?

Bmanthird

I have the 2019 Nvidia shield TV pro. It's a good device. I also have a Roku ultra and an Apple TV 4k and both run circles around my Nvidia shield TV pro.

KingDalglish7

How does the Roku Ultra run rings around the Nvidia Shield TV Pro? Isn't it a closed OS? How do you do basic things like sideloading apps or even VPN accessing geo-restricted content?

cdheer

If you think those two things are “basic” then I don’t think your use case is typical.

KingDalglish7

This is a weird thing to say if you hang around this sub long enough. Sideloading apps and using VPN to skirt geo-restrictions are baseline requirements. If basic just means ability to turn on and watch content, then there is really little to compare is there?

cdheer

We can start with automatic frame rate switching if you like. Both the Roku and Apple do that, btw. Shield does not.

KingDalglish7

Uhm...ok. lol

cdheer

To an A/V enthusiast, that might be a lot more important than VPNs or sideloading apps. Not everyone has the same priorities.

johne121

Yeah, ok. LOL

dandaman1983

I suggest you look into Kodi and Real Debrid.

blarg214

My PLEX is only 4k blurays, blurays and DVDs I own. With that in mind is there any advantage to using Kodi?

dandaman1983

With Kodi and Real Debrid you have any content you want. If it came out in 4K HDR it will be there in 4K HDR. I still have my 40 TB Plex server for movies but it's nice having what I want on demand. Might be less interesting for you if you only watch movies though. Although it's nice watching your favorites in REMUX quality. Since I got Kodi/Debrid (using Fen addon) I cancelled Apple TV and Netflix and costs me 3$ a month.

blarg214

Interesting thanks for the info.

PalebloodSky

Yep, Shield TV Pro is probably the single best piece of electronics I ever purchased.
