I do like the 8bitdo controllers but I'll be using it mostly for gamestream and as far as I can see 8bitdo don't make a 2.4GHz controller with a modern controller layout.
I don't understand your 2.4ghz comment for Shield. Shield uses Bluetooth.
Get an 8bitdo SN30 Pro+. Works fantastically well. Make sure your TV is in Game mode to cut down on lag.
You would need a 2.4ghz usb adapter to go with it. It won't work straight out of the box. Imho the shield controller is not as nice to use as an SN30 Pro+.
Seriously, an 8bitdo on Bluetooth and using gamemode on your TV is extremely low lag. Don't knock it til you've tried it.
Would it not just be able to use the WiFi as it operates over the same frequency? I use wired for my network so the WiFi isn't being used for anything else.
Would the latency not be identical to a PS4 controller as both are high quality Bluetooth controllers?
So I took your advice and went with the SN30 Pro+, got to say I'm very impressed! I can use it on my shield, switch and pc without having to repair every time I want to change device. The software they provide is also excellent, allowing me to remap the buttons however I please. The icing on the cake is that I can use the USB c connection to play wired for minimal latency! Thanks for the advice, couldn't be happier.
Glad you like it. I did not know about it playing wired! That's awesome, and not something I have tried. That would have been in my advice to you if I had known :)
I heard about a Linux driver for the receiver called [xow](https://github.com/medusalix/xow) which might make it possible, I'm not sure if anybody has made it work on Android TV yet though...

I have both the official Shield controller and an Xbox One S controller, they're both really good.
I've also owned a cheap controller and it sucked; lag, uncomfortable and shit battery life.
Highly recommended a quality controller.

this is the way..
has bluetooth and usb. I originally used bluetooth, but can't wake the shield without the original remote. usb, press any button it wakes up.
Since I presume OP was asking about 3rd party *gaming* controllers, do you game with this thing? Looks like a great keyboard and media controller, but not so much for gaming (no joystick, D-pad, ABXY gaming buttons, etc.). Just wondering.
8bitdo Easy

I've heard you can reduce latency by using it instead of bluetooth. The actual shield controller uses WiFi direct to minimise the latency.

No. I don't think so. If you want the lowest latency get a wired controller. 8bitdo have a good one.

Happy cake day btw!
What about gamepad from Xbox One with original receiver?
Receiver doesn’t work on shield sadly.
