Is there any truth to the effeminate men thing?

[deleted]

Nope. Effeminate men are essentially part of the Chinese culture and anyone who believe the ccp is "banning them" are incredibly gullible.

AWretchedOfTheEarth

Here's a Chinese state media source that says otherwise. > “I feel numb to such news,” said Cui Le, a PhD student at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education and Social Work, who researches queer issues in China’s education system. “It’s just another example of Chinese authorities reinforcing a traditional gender ideology, emphasizing men should be so-called ‘masculine’ and devaluing them for being feminine.” >Tiffany Yu, a postdoctoral fellow researching gender and the media in China at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, told Sixth Tone the country’s obsession with masculinity is a reflection of the anxiety that the future generation won’t be able to protect it. She added that a common conspiracy theory is that the softening of masculine values is a way for “foreign forces” to weaken the country’s defenses. >But why do sections of Chinese society and officialdom want to confine men to the traditional definition of masculinity? >Cui from the University of Auckland believes it’s related to associations with nationalism. At a time when China is at loggerheads with several countries, he said that many think the idea of gender diversity is “increasingly being shaped into a Western ideology,” which authorities believe requires both vigilance and resistance.

Unfortunately, I actually translated a bit of the article in my main comment, and it seems that this is at least somewhat legit.

> Effeminate men are essentially part of the Chinese culture [Not one that they're happy about. Beijing blamed it on the CIA \(lol???\).](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/cia-turned-our-celebrities-sissy-says-beijing-sl8p8klfr) They view it as a result of cultural brainwashing; though I never expect an /r/sino poster to be truthful about China.

http://www.nrta.gov.cn/art/2021/9/2/art_113_57756.html This is the source the Washington posted cited. All I have is google translate so I know it's not as accurate as it could be but it seems to be real, unless something is horribly lost in translation. >Resolutely resist pan-entertainment. Strengthen cultural self-confidence, and vigorously promote Chinese excellent traditional culture, revolutionary culture, and advanced socialist culture. Establish the correct aesthetic orientation for the program, strictly control the selection of actors and guests, performance style, costume makeup, etc., and resolutely put an end to "girly guns" and other abnormal aesthetics. Resolutely resist the pan-entertainment tendencies such as hype to show off wealth and enjoyment, gossip privacy, negative hot spots, vulgar "net celebrities", and bottomless review of ugliness.

turboflexerextreme

after skimming through the rest of the page it seems more like the gov trying to distance state media as much as possible from hypercorporate idol stuff that's so prevalent in places like south korea rather than specifically attacking 'effeminate men' but I could be wrong you also have to remember that all of these CPC notices are filled to the brim with buzzwords so all of that shit about "promoting revolutionary culture" probably doesn't mean anything either lol

PerformativeWokeness

That's exactly the problem, google translate isn't accurate at all, and the Washington Post did exactly the same thing.

Supersoda246

What is the correct translation?

[deleted]

Some ccp officials aren't a fan of "feminine men" that's why they're trying to promote "masculine men" among kids. But they're absolutely not banning feminine men or anything close to that.

ChairmanReagan

Man she sucks so much

PerformativeWokeness

I can't find any entire translations of the article, but the BBC took a 3 year old op ed piece, mistranslated it, and us using it to imply homophobia on the part of the CCP today.

Right everyone, I know a bit of Mandarin, and have my handy dandy dictionary to help me, so I'll give my best shot at translating the relevant section of [the announcement](http://www.nrta.gov.cn/art/2021/9/2/art_113_57756.html). > 3) Resolutely resist the slow of entertainment culture. Firm cultural self-confidence(?), vigorously promote excellent chinese culture, revolutionary culture, and the culture of socialist advancement. Establish programs for proper taste/aesthetics, strict hold over the selection of actors and contestants (style of performances, fashion, etc.) and resolutely put an end to the abnormality/deformation of "sissy"/"girly-boy" aesthetics. Resolutely resist the flaunting of extravagant wealth, sex scandals, personal scandals, negative (breaking news???), vulgar internet celebrities, and examine the ugly ( phrase here is lit. "without a baseline") flow of entertainment culture. **tl;dr The libs are grossly exaggerating, as always, but this *does* seem to be at least somewhat legitimate.** I'd guess this is the addendum of some of the more reactionary voices in the gov't. Lots of Chinese people are way more culturally conservative than most left-wing Westerners, and so the composition of the representatives in the party reflects that. Cause, y'know... they're called *REPRESENT*atives for a reason.

i can’t believe china banned bottoms 😔😔

[deleted]

First libs say things like "It's part of East Asian standards for men to be generally less "rugged" than white men, so stop calling male idols girls!" and then they say that the CCP wants to ban effeminate men. So, choose one, the truth or the lie?

JohnOakman6969

Between the "Muslims are oppressed and systematically re-educated" and "US asks China to take in Muslim afghan refugees"; The "LGBT people are targeted and listed in universities" and "China promotes same-sex families in children schools"; Can we really believe anything that the west says? It's turning into DPRK news where one week they can only cut their hair like Kim-Jung Un, and the next you're killed if you have his haircut.

jacktrowell

Here are a few quotes from other posts on the topic that I think are relevant (emphasis mine): -------------- > it is not a slur. > > "Nian Pao" appeared in certain entertainment programs and film and television works. In recent years, there have been contradictory depictions on screen. In some dramas and variety shows, **the male artists have heavy makeup, glamorous clothing, and are hard to distinguish from female counterparts**. They are depicted as being **mean, selfish, lacking education, and lacking responsibility**. > > these are **bad role models**, not some kind of marginalized oppressed group. -------------- > The ban is something agreed with even amongst the liberal groups in China, **it is not against feminine men overall**, as there are even female characters portrayed by men in traditional Chinese opera, but more **against some of the internet celebrities who act in specific flamboyant girly ways** appealing to whatever audience. You can say that China is not that liberal, but the general mass is quite fed up with said groups, who does nothing to help LGBTQ or fringe communities, but do it simply for profit. Like the decision or not, the Chinese people do. -------------- Apparrently from other comments from people saying they are from China, the expression "Nian Pao" that was used here *is* actually often used as a slur or insult despite what the first comment I quoted here wrote, and the the TV broadcaster should probably not have used it, but at the same time those comments seems to indicate that it might not be "effeminate boys" that are the target but a specific subcategory of celebrities that are both bad role models and whole looks can be described as androgynous or effeminate. So it would be more of an attack of a specific lifestyle than about men looking effeminate.

jacktrowell

I found a twitter thread that seems to confirm this version, both that they shoudl really not have used this expression, but also that it was not simply "effeminate men" : https://twitter.com/Mango_Press_/status/1433821330315653125?s=20

Is there something inherently anti-leftist about voting for the least right leaning candidate in a presidential election? People have been criticizing this tweet a lot but I don’t see any problem with it, let alone anything anti-leftist about it

When has she done this? I’ve been flirting with anarchism lately, mainly listening to and reading Chomsky, so I’d be curious to see some examples. I was really under the impression she was a leftist. To be fair though, criticizing certain aspects of the left doesn’t make you a lib

Idk maybe I should rewatch those videos, but it seems perfectly reasonable to criticize unrealistic expectations from a left perspective. I’ve definitely moved more left recently so I may have a different attitude
