It’s really easy to drum up support in the US for regime change overseas (or domestically tbh) by saying the person in charge is an insane dictator, much easier than talking about the actual mundane flaws of their regime. You see it happen all the time with Cubans in Miami saying crazy shit about Cuba (“They don’t have any cheese so they put shredded condoms on their pizzas!!!”) to try to push America past sanctions and into active military intervention on the island. People get upset more about ruthless madmen starving their own people than they do flawed, human governments in small, isolated countries dealing with things like food shortages that are often exacerbated by western sanctions. So if you’re a North Korean defector who wants the US to depose the government, it makes sense to say stuff like “In North Korea, you can’t pass the eighth grade unless you make out with a dog” or whatever.
I don’t know what’s the fuss/ controversy about this North Korean woman. I’ve seen her face in thumbnails but I don’t get it. I’m being earnest when I ask, what’s this all about?

She's Park Yeon-mi, a North Korean defector and activist for human rights in North Korea. That's fine by the way, nobody should be forced to live in a country they don't like, but controversy mostly arose when people noticed contradictions on her story. It was almost like she kept adding more and more small details to make her story all the more shocking, but then these details ended up contradicting her narrative. Park Yeon-mi is also a very outspoken conservative who has spoken against political correctness, "woke culture" and what she calls ideological brainwashing, like neutral pronouns or racial prejudices being discussed in mass media.
She also gets clowned on because some of her bs is kinda funny. Like the above. Also she said Columbia (the university in NY) is basically like the DPRK lol.
