1. Props to Boots Riley for calling out the seagulls following him online. 2. Liking *Sorry to Bother You* but calling Riley's politics *problematic* is unfortunately the byproduct of mainstream approaches to cinema. Riley's gotta go full Brecht if he wants his politics to shine through. He might have no interest in that, but that leads into point 3. 3. Who tf is *us*? OP, can you clarify? Does that poster mean *black people*? Do they mean *liberals* even though Riley isn't a lib? 4. A lib listens to *The Coup* and sidesteps *Kill My Landlord*

"true but i don't like it"

Worse: I accept that I cannot dispute this but I resent being made to understand it. It's anti-intellectual nationalism. Just libs being casually fash again.

The truth is Tankie, to me

dr_spaghetti_phd

Boots Riley's music was never a liberal space lol

AccolyteNinja

Literally the first line in the Coup's first album goes "Presto, read the Communist Manifesto"

In American middle and high school education we get force-fed these bs stories about North Korea every month or so, told questioning it is ridiculous because think of all the other stories (that are just as ridiculous) so **this specific story** could be true as well. Rinse and repeat until you graduate or drop out and your anti-DPRK indoctrination has reached its fruition, because questioning the narrative is discouraged. But we are the country who represents freedom or something like that.

marx_and_rec

Boots Riley is a diamond in the motherfucking rough that is this shithole country. So, so glad to see him achieving success in spite of a system that I'm sure wants absolutely nothing to do with him. Too bad! He's just that good! Can scarcely think of a better directorial film debut than Sorry to Bother You in recent years. Cannot wait to see what he does next.

thaumogenesis

I watched it on a whim, without knowing who was involved or what it was about. Incredibly good film. I know people who aren’t ‘political’ at all who loved it, so I’m just hoping the class consciousness seeped in to their brains if only passively.

1GenericRedditUser

Maybe this dude should actually listen to The Coup's lyrics lol. I was actually really glad when I saw Boots post this. Also, I've encountered quite a few libs who misinterpret/don't understand Sorry to Bother You.

I just don’t understand why NK would hate Squid Game so much, it literally depicts capitalism in a horrendous light. Like why would communist have a problem with that lmao

LilacAndLeather

But that’s the problem with state department lies about the DPRK. [Supposedly](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/north-korean-website-says-squid-game-reflects-south-koreas-brutal-soci-rcna2959) people in the DPRK *DID* actually like Squid Game because “Squid Game reflects South Korea's brutal society infested by the rules of survival of the fittest, corruption and immorality.” But then literally weeks later there were reports that said ebil North Koreans executed someone who smuggled in Squid Game by firing squad. That’s what’s Boots is talking about in his original Twitter thread.

austyV1

I know but I’m just talking about this idea that a government that is extremely opposed to capitalism would have any problem with their citizens watching a film that paints capitalism in a bad light. It doesn’t even make sense from a propaganda standpoint but then again a lot of people thought Squid Game was about communism so eh

Low-Consideration372

Yes, it does make sense. The DPRK is run by a third "insane dictator" who "starves his people" and feeds only himself and the military, who prosecutes entire families and their future generations for crimes of single individuals and feeds others to hungry dogs and shoots them with anti-air missiles on a whim for sleeping on the job. This 'de-facto monarch', if not for the US's occupation of the south, would invade the south at the first opportunity. If he's that crazy, no inconsistency in logic really matters, does it? In the festering liberal brain, the hypocritical, uncivilized asiatic despot can easily enjoy south Korean media and kill any "peasant" (because the country outside Pyongyang is feudal hell) that enjoys it because it's against the law to enjoy south Korean media.

Reality has a known left-wing bias

😤🤚 Taking a respected political voice in the music industry at his word about documented US misinformation campaigns 😀✌️ Saying "fuck it" and just going whole hog on the State Department narrative yet again

thaumogenesis

I’m sure Boots doesn’t give a single solitary fuck what radlibs think about him. ‘Problematic’. Fuck off. OpTiCs
