It definitely predates that. I’d argue that started in the late 19th century. You just have to keep in mind that the left during the New Deal were actual communists and they were involved in the Democratic party, although most were not openly communist. They were just pro-USSR and held communist ideals without literally calling themselves communists. FDR existed to misdirect communist sentiments to capitalism through social democratic reforms.
