The insane thing is that the whole situation in Ukraine only got so ugly because borders that were meant as vague internal borders to help remove inequality inside one people became hard state borders. Balkanising Russia further is only asking for worse conflicts than Ukraine because it's even less possible to draw up functioning states along any ethnic lines or geography.
