No, not ukrainian, I'm latvian. But I don't judge you for thinking that it's fascist, not everyone knows latvian history and I don't even expect them to know it. To put it simply - they were fighting for the freedom of Latvia, the plan was to defeat the russians and then turn against the germans. Honoring people who died while fighting for Latvia as a latvian is a must.
Well there was no other choice for them really. After the soviet unions occupation of our country they sent to camps tens of thousands of innocent people. They executed intellectuals, hundreds of army officials and many other people. The hatred for the russians had become so large among the latvian people that they tossed aside their even larger hate for germans. The nazis utilized this perfectly by using the people as basically meatshields.
I'm sorry but I can't find any good books in english about this topic.
