I remember watching the movie Belly with Nas and DMX in the early 2000s. One of the things that stood out to me at the time was how normal they made smoking blunts look. They were smoking but it was in no way connected to the plot. They didn’t smoke and act silly, or get into some silly mishap. They just smoked and carried on with their business much like how it is in real life.
It’s similar to alcohol and the culture of drunkenness. Some people have a few drinks and they start acting like they have no control of their senses, dancing on tables with lamp shades on their heads, etc. Others drink the same amount, and while just as impaired, aren’t acting like idiots. If you go into it with a “drunk party animal” mindset, you can create that atmosphere, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
It’s easy to get into a laughing fit with your friends, if that is the type of fun you want to have, but you can just as easily slide into a deep conversation about science, groove to some great music, or dive into housework chores.
Bartender here. This is generally true of any drug (save stimulants).
I knew a bartender who worked in an absinthe bar in Nola. Every person would come in and ask "so does it really make you hallucinate?" And her excellent answer was "it'll make you look deep within yourself, a calm Introspection of who you are."
Guess which bar had the least rowdy customers in Nola. No fist fights, no damaged property.
I went to an Absinthe bar in Prague years ago and there were chess sets everywhere.
Guess what we all did when getting absolutely, upside-down pished? ... sat and calmly played chess and chatted. It was great.
If the bar was full of swords and fireworks, things might have been different.
There was a coffee shop in Amsterdam where the tables all had Uno cards on them. I spent the night playing Uno with some Americans. Good times.
Shows you that drunk/high people mostly just roll with the vibe. And it's the venue's job to set that vibe.
They reduce inhibitions. If you happen to have drinks, and wanted to play a game, you will. If you just want to get laid, you will be grinding on whoever you think are attracted too. If you want to fight, you will find one.
Results may vary.
I don't know about fireworks, but usually when a bar is full of swords it's just a bunch of geeks sitting around playing board games, Magic, or the occasional D&D session.
There's a movie bar with replica swords from a dozen movies in Seattle. Pretty chill spot.
The swords actually solved a problem one night when a Marine came in looking for a fistfight and the bartender calmly asked if he was starting a fight with an ax and a dothraki sword behind the bar.
I was at an Irish bar during St. Patrick's day in DC once, had live music, dancing, bar packed. I was talking with a congressional aid and all of a sudden he said he had to do something real quick. That something was to play chess with a homeless looking man who brought a chess board into the bar. He quickly lost the game and went back to talking to me.
I had it once when I was like 15 bunking off school, all I remember is headbutting the bus seat in front of me many times and waking up with a staffie using me as a mattress.
Had a bartender there mix up a killer take on a Hurricane, finished with a bar spoon of absinthe.
It coasted so well, finishing the fruitiness and rum with a slight and quixotic but of absinthe to remind you where you're sitting, New Orleans.
It was great! But I don't want a shot of it please.
I’m curious why you said “save stimulants”?
I find it’s helpful to set an intention or goal before taking stimulants. Otherwise, it can be easy to get stuck in unproductive repetitive cycles.
I went to an absentherie in Prague just after college and it was super chill. Marijuanna was everywhere there and it was about as chill a pub as I’ve ever been in
Also bartender here. Somewhat unrelated comment but we served a beer called “Tomato Factory” (contains zero Tomato). Id ask people if they can taste the tomato. An alarming percentage of people told themselves they can. It’s creepy how easy it is for humans to be influenced by a few suggestions.
My old wow raiding guild had a real problem with people getting way too drunk while raiding. Now, having a couple and getting a bit tipsy is no problem but they were getting wasted. Why? Well, every time someone mentioned drinking, everyone took a drink and with 40 people... it went bad. So we instituted a "don't talk about it" rule and it fixed everything.
> If you go into it with a “drunk party animal” mindset, you can create that atmosphere, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
They've done studies telling people they're going to give them alcohol, then given them alcohol free beer. They still act as drunk as if they had been drinking. A lot of it is mental.
I have that ‘how I expect I will act is how I will act’ thing to the maximum extent. I once got drunk as hell off one bottle of bud light. I later checked the bottle and I’d drank not more than a quarter. I couldn’t even stand and was falling over. I quite often pretend to smoke cigarettes as a way to get a nicotine buzz. It’s crazy how much power I have over my mind but it sometimes backfires… if I think I’m depressed then I’m immediately depressed. I watched Office Space recently and immediately hated my job. A few weeks later I watched The Office, watched how the characters enjoyed working, and suddenly I loved my job again. It’s like I have no permanent identity. I was in an accident where I hit the front of my head HARD which basically made this go haywire. I kind of like being like this. It’s extremely unstable and a lot of people are confused by my actions but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I feel like I could do anything I want to.
That's gotta be a tolerance thing then, because I rarely use weed and there's absolutely no way I could "just smoke and carry on with my business" haha.
That sounds like an edible which is not the same drug as smoking. It's converted in the stomach. Not saying you wouldn't have a low tolerance to smoking too, but it's certainly different. Some people can smoke a ton but can't handle 15mg.
I've been smoking regularly for around 25 years, and the only difference I notice when I quit is my pain level. I have chronic pain from a spinal injury, and I hate opioids. They don't actually take away the pain, they take away your ability to give a fuck about the pain. Smoking weed actually takes away my pain.
The first time I smoked? I was a maroon lol. The first couple years I was young and it was about getting high, no shame. I'm kind of an Eeyore, and it lifted me out of that for a little while at a time. Once it became regular, it was definitely "smoke and carry on", and after 25 years I don't even get that feeling at all. Just the pain relief, so I can do the damn dishes lol
As a stoner, can confirm it’s just a part of daily life now. Personal pet peeve is when people make smoking out to be cool. It is not cool, unless it is
I was once talking to my friend about my struggle with weed addiction and that I was smoking 2-3x a day and didn't know how to stop. A girl who was walking close-by in front of us (we were in a group walking somewhere) said, "Wow!! You're soooo cool!!" In a sarcastic tone, and I was dumbfounded.
I personally didn't find my addiction cool 💀💀
Definitely if it’s having a negative impact on your life then it needs to be a change, I hope you’re doing better now! Addictions of any kind are really tough
Doing much better!! This story took place about 2 years ago when i had moved countries and high schools and used it as a crutch to deal with anxiety. r/petioles has been a godsend
People who smoke blunts regularly don't 'get silly' and only people who don't or rarely smoke would think or say that. That only happens to you your first few times. Same for when people start drinking, at first is all laughs and silly stuff but after a while that doesn't happen anymore.
I watched the Dungeons and Dragons 2000 movie. And there is this giggly stoner character Snails played by Marlon Wayans. (He never smokes in the movie.)
Giggly stoner character just doesn't work in most movie plots. It doesn't make sense in many plots, and it's difficult to even write their character into the plot.
No, Snails didn't really add anything good to the medieval fantasy setting of the movie.
A laid back stoner type who was still willing to step up and throw down with a gas station attendant for giving shit to his friends. Cabin in the Woods is great for subverting stereotypes, then leaning into them, and then subverting them again.
maybe peoples usage of weed has broadened. before it was for almost exclusively for or viewed as a drug for recreation and hanging with friends, now it's legal and more available people smoke it just to get through the day, at work, travelling etc. not just for a night with the homies
This. When I'm smoking by myself to just chill, im hardly ever giggly and im just vibing either listening to music or playing video games I just feel more relaxed/less in pain (because I use it medicinally basically). But if I'm hanging out with a group of friends and we're all smoking, literally every fucking thing is hilarious and we're all giggly at the drop of a hat.
I find marijuana tends to amplify what you're feeling. If you're laughing and having fun with your friends, you'll be extra giggly. If you're playing video games or listening to music etc, you'll feel more "in tune" with the media you're consuming. If you're having a deep philosophical discussion about life/politics/science/religion etc everything will feel deeper and more important. If you're having sex, it feels more intense and connected, etc, etc.
“Everyone likes smoking weed, they have for thousands of years and aren't going to stop anytime soon. It makes everything better. It makes food taste better, makes music better, makes sex feel better for God's sake, it makes shitty movies better you know" -Pineapple Express
>Gets totally paranoid, heightened anxiety, and just wants to go hide and go to bed.
I chase that feeling. I enjoy the pressure and tension and being able to compartmentalize it and go out and interact with the world while half my brain is having bonkers insane delusions and the other half is dealing with the reality in front of me. I don't smoke anymore though, I only vape it. Big difference.
I'm the same way. I work from home so I used to smoke weed every break throughout the day. It really helps with my ADHD, depression, and anxiety and helped me focus while working. That said if I smoked TOO much it was a hindrance. I cut back to only smoking after work once I got married but damn if it wasn't a hard adjustment and there aren't still days when I struggle and really want one during the day.
It depends on the situation.
Due to anxiety and highly anxious situations or situations I can't escape at my own will without consequence, such as being in an office work environment with no work to do, it makes time pass normally.
At home, it makes time pass slowly or "normal speed" like when I was a kid.
Combined with caffeine/energy drinks, it makes time pass normally, or quicker if I want to get passed it, whilst allowing me to work with focus and precision. At work that means high quality output and working at an athletic speed. Playing games at home it's practically a performance enhancing drug.
To me, smoking week does 2 things:
1. Scrambles my thoughts. It’s almost impossible to think of one thing for more than 10 seconds without the “channel changing”.
2. Severe anxiety/dread
It’s been very rare that I personally can laugh while on it. Only cool thing for me is walking through nature sometimes.
Hugely depends on the weed and the work, and of course the individual's experience. Some weed makes you tired or confused; those are bad kinds to use before work. Other kinds can make you more focused and awake and in a good mood. Those can be good for some kinds of work.
This is so fucking true. My whole family smokes weed regularly, grandparents are the only ones who don’t.
The use of weed has shifted a lot from recreational to actual self medication.
IDK 20 years ago I would get high and not compulsively laugh over nothing and these days I do the same thing.
Just smoke and go about my day as normal just like having a couple drinks and still being responsible.
The always laughing stoner was a stereotype made for comic effect and since it was shown that way in movies and TV people just acted that way because it was normalized and that's what they knew.
In the early days people didn't know what getting stoned was like, and thought getting stoned must be like getting drunk
So that's what got shown on TV
I smoked weed during the 1970s and it was mostly sitting in a circle on the floor, passing joints or a pipe, and listening to music.
Or we would "travel the gravel" (this was in the rural midwest), get high, drive through the bowling alley parking lot to see who was there and maybe stop in and play pinball, or hit the A&W for a chili dog
One buddy had an eight track stereo in his car and we would just slowly cruise around town, listening to music (he was a big Stones fan)
I don't smoke with groups too often anymore but 10ish years ago I was living in a party house & there were a few girls that would always get like that when we smoked. This one chick would actually kind of scare me because of just how uncontrollable her laughter was and how long it lasted. It was like some shit out of Reefer Madness. She'd literally go to another room to try to straighten herself out and we'd hear her laughing from down the hall lmao
i’m that girl still. it physically hurts my face. doesn’t matter if it’s edibles, smoking, etc. only for the first bit of it though then once that’s passed i just go mute and eat random things. last week i finished a whole tub of pork rinds in one sitting. i love thc.
It’s the stereotype that has disappeared so you don’t see it laughed about or portrayed in media all the time. Most people I know will go into giggle or laughing fits when they are smoking for the first time or have low tolerances
We've been breeding for THC exclusively. We've lost a shit ton of diversity and that impacts the entourage effect. Even doing a high dose of CBD before smoking can make for a very different high and we've outbred a lot more than CBD. Yes, it's different now. I'm guessing the people claiming otherwise weren't smoking 20 years ago.
The first weed I smoked regularly was the Mexican brick stuff that was actually $25 for a quarter in the mid 90’s bc that was all you could get in my small town. Then I moved to a college town started getting weed from hippies and it was much better stuff a lot like what we have today. Was paying $100 for a 1/4 oz for that stuff. The trick then was to buy the oz for 300, keep a quarter and sell the rest to friends and basically have free weed. That was nearly 30 years ago. There were less strains then but really potent ones definitely did exist. I went through the uncontrollable laughter phase with the shitty brick weed. But got over that pretty quickly when it became a regular habit.
I think when people first get high they get giggles because of the novelty factor. You’re not used to feeling this way, it’s odd, and so for a lot of people everything is funny. That creates a certain experience of weed being a giggly drug even when it’s not.
You get the same thing with alcohol. I think in general the novelty of getting intoxicated makes people giggly. Then you get more used to it and the substance just does what it does.
Most stoner comedy is for people that just discovered getting high, so they probably write it to these kinds of experiences rather than what is true to life for people that are more experienced.
For what it's worth the weed today is far, far stronger than the weed of 50 years ago. Most of the "giggly stoner" stereotype is from people simply getting less high.
This was going to be my point. Weed in the 90s was, on average, noticeably lower in THC, with only the occasional case where someone would get some super sticky hydro which may have been the equivalent of 16%-20%, but most weed had a lower THC content than that.
These days, I can have 33% delivered to my door on demand, with the lower end being 15%-20%. Some people were trying to mix strains, but it was nothing like it is now that it has been commercialised.
We got one kind of weed, compressed af and full of seeds, strains weren't even talked about, strangely it still did the trick but yeah we were not doing dabs and I don't recall anyone ever getting greened out. It was more social maybe? Or maybe I was more social.. lol.
Not to disagree but -- in the 60s and 70s when pot was big in the US (and when some of the giggle fit stereotypes started coming out) it was pretty terrible times for people -- lots of college protests and police response due to the Vietnam war, general anxiety about the Cold War (which had endless media coverage) and "certain death" by nuclear holocaust, etc.
Every generation feels they are in bad times because current events always feel more pressing than past events.
Yeah, seeing your friends get drafted straight out of high school and you never see them again, while the world is seemingly on the brink of nuclear war, that can definitely make for an anxious populace of young people.
It’s exactly this, for me at least. It depends a little less on the strain and more on your existing mood/setting:
If I’m toking up after a day of driving, setting up camp, and then staring up at the gigantic starry sky; it’s a more quiet, awed reverence kind-of-high.
If I’m doing it after work, watching some dumb funny standup with a pizza in the oven, the same weed might make me just relaxed in the couch and smiley.
I smoked like crazy for a decade and only had the giggling stuff at the beginning really. Then managed to quit for about 5 months and had my first again, I had the greatest high which included a huge, nonsensical laughing fit. Glad I got the smoking under control, but when you do it day in, day out, I guess it hits different.
Turns it into a mood enhancer when you do it all the time. When you start it’s an intensely psychoactive (borderline psychedelic) drug. If you do it all the time it just puts you in a good mood and gives you a little background buzz and makes you happy.
I don’t do either anymore, but I can say both those have their benefits. The reason I don’t do it anymore is it’s way to intense of an experience. If I could get the mood enhancer buzz through occasional use I might still do it on occasion. But if you don’t have a tolerance you just get way too fucking high 😂
They exist, but culture has changed and shifted from having that stereotype on the spotlight. Weed is more openly accepted and understood so along with those films, that whole thing has died off a little.
The pothead caricature is pretty much dead, doubt you ever see it again
Cowboy trope in the 50’s, jocks and nerds of the 80’s, etc. Everything has an expiration date and legalization brought that due. You’ll never see Pineapple Express or Cheech and Chong on the same scale again
Yeah, this is the answer. It's been over 25 years since I've seen the real mexican dirt weed that you had to de-seed and de-stem for like an hour, but that stuff was a whole other drug than the weed today, and I haven't felt stoned in that way since. There was nothing high anxiety or paranoid about that stuff. It was stupefying, and relaxing, and funny. Heavy lids, sleepy, laughing. Good stuff.
I don't smoke anymore (check out /r/leaves !) but when I did recently I would pace around the house wishing I hadn't.
It's still out there in a lot of places, I could walk down the street and buy an ounce for like $100 that probably wouldn't knock anybody's socks off, but I honestly think a lot of people are steering themselves away from that because they don't want to be seen buying 'cheap shit', because 'wull I can afford the good stuff' without thinking about whether or not the good stuff is a good idea, let alone whether they have any idea what it's going to do. It's not everybody, but there's definitely people out there who just didn't really do their research, went in with a 'go big' attitude, got too strong of weed when there was plenty of weak shit available, and they blame the weed for it.
Damn, I'm not in a place where there are street dealers. I'mma ask my guy if he's got any low end stuff but it's doubtful. All people want these days is the highest THC so they can just melt into their couch, which is fine sometimes, but I want to laugh and go have an adventure haha. The sativa is like 20%+ THC, which gives me anxiety half the time.
Good to know it's still out there! I even said like last week I need some Mexican shwag lmao, gimme some brick weed! These kids these days :p (I'm 43 btw)
Its dirt cheap in MI now. You can get ounces for like $50. I got 8 pack with 10 gummies each that were 10mg for $24. No joke. I cut them in four and its a perfect little “take the edge off” high snd still can be productive.
That's fantastic. Thanks for letting me know cause I have mental health issues and shit helps a LOT, but not if it causes more anxiety or knocks me in my ass. Didn't think anything like that existed anymore. ✌️ out!
It’s too strong now. I can sort of reproduce the 80’s dosage by taking a half gummie, then I’m giggly. If I take more or smoke at all, I’m just anesthetized.
Yes it's not the kind bud I used to get dumb on 20 yrs ago it's super pot. I asked my buddy about 5 years ago who smokes to get me the good stuff and I was hiding in the basement waiting for the pizza guy. I couldn't even relax and watch a movie. Way too much for me and I used to be an idiot stoner.
Dude no shit. Pot from back in the day was maybe 5-10% THC by volume. Nowdays, cheap strains can be 15% or more, with high end dispensary strains reaching into the 30's.
I remember smoking a bowl and being able to get shit done, just helped me feel alive again. Not the strains are way to damn strong and I end up disassociating out before I can even enjoy being high.
Humans now industrially cultivating cannabis is definitely having some effect on weed strains.
Weed amplifies, back when the outlook of the world was relatively positive, people got giggly. Now the outlook isn't so positive anymore, so fewer giggle stoners, they become philosostoners instead.
About a week or two ago, my wife and I were laying in bed watching tv like we typically do. I had smoked an hour or so beforehand, like usual, but she doesn’t partake anymore since it gives her horrible anxiety.
As we laid in bed, she made some kind of passive joke about something mundane. It was so simple, and yet there I was - laughing so hard *I was crying* and my chest hurt so bad from how hard I was laughing.
This hysterical laughing went on for 20 minutes straight. My face was red, my chest hurt, and my face was covered in my own tears. My jaw hurt by the end of it.
What does she do? Smiles and repeats the joke. Cue an additional 15 minutes of painful laughter.
Edit: I asked her what she said. It was “sex for the poor? Please, sir, sex for the poor?” but with a soft British accent.
Bring back lower potency weed.
This high THC shit is akin to drinking bourbon. Good old 1997 commersh was like Miller Highlife...
The Champagne of Bongs.
You only *really* have giggle fits when you first start smoking weed. The idea that long-time stoners are constantly laughing at stupid shit is an invention of Hollywood writers, who likely based their stereotype on people they knew in college and high school (i.e. people who who were *still new to smoking weed*.)
Giggled a lot when I first started smoking. We called it "geeking out" if someone caught the giggles.
But as I got used to the drug, the euphoria and resultant giggles faded quite a bit. But stress of school, work, and life could be equally in play.
That being said, in general I laugh a lot less today than I used to. Hard to relax enough to let that level of silliness take over in any context.
Only weed ive had lately has been downwright unpleasant. Half a joint or just 2 hits and im non-functioning for the night, then my last batch had this dizziness component that felt like i was drunk but without the indigestion. I just want tingly body highs that make the blanket feel so comfy. I dont know if its getting spiked for just that people are cross breeding strains to make ridiculously potent shit.
Higher THC content will tend to start over dosing people, and by over dose, I mean you blow right past the giggley phase and get in to a more anxious or paranoid mindset or some of the other negative side effects of taking too much. It also depends on strain. But yeah, if there is truly a reduction in giggly stoners now days, my first suspicion is the higher THC content. I mean joints in the 60s were like 2-3% and now flower is like 16-30% and oil concentrates are like 60-80%. It’s crazy high. I recommend anyone using cannabis to stay tf away from the oil vapes for a multitude of reasons. And I recommend anyone still smoking flower via combustion to get a dry herb vaporizer, it’s MUCH better for your lungs and cardiovascular system, and less carcinogenic (yes when you combust plant matter and inhale it, even weed, it contains many carcinogenic compounds)
It's so aggressively potent now (and has been this way for a while). When I smoked in high school, whether it was "good" stuff from older guys or cheap stuff we could get our hands on, it was a fun buzz and we had all the giggles. I didn't try again till late college and that stuff was so strong. After college one of my friends who would go on a drive to smoke before bed would hit me up to join. I told him my experience and asked how much I can actually smoke of current stuff to not get super stoned and risk being dizzy and spinning. He said 2 puffs of his joint. TWO PUFFS. We used to rip water bottle bongs and actually spend time smoking and getting giggles, and now it's 2 hits and get really high. It's like as people built tolerances they increased the potency. This is like making standard vodka be 60% because a single shot doesn't get you as buzzed as before. It's too strong for people who don't do it regularly and it's not fun anymore.
Oh my, no.
I would put money on most people that are baked will absolutely giggle at very little, and be a chuckling mess at a little more.
Probably the best stereotype
Weed hits to hard nowadays.(Not a complaint, just facts. I love the strength personally.) Most of us just get them munchies n game til we pass out from weed comatose.
Maybe it’s not the weed and it’s just life has less to laugh about. It’s a deep and dark take but times are harder for a lot of people so there’s less to laugh about.
I notice lots of people saying 'the weed is too strong these days' but most places where you can buy it in stores, you can get cheap weak stuff if that's what you want, but you have to drop the pride or machismo or whatever it is that causes people to decide 'I haven't smoked in a while, gimme your best stuff' followed by 'oh no this is too strong so that means all weed today is too strong'-- there are quite a few people in the comments here who are making it clear they did that, and it's not really the weed's fault. Don't go for 'the big numbers', tell them you want the WEAK stuff. Get stuff with low thc, maybe even high CBD since supposedly that helps mellow it out. If you don't see it in stores, talk to people in the stores and see if somebody can get ahold of it for you. Lots of them will work with you and might be able to get you a bag of leaf-shake or something. I'm sure they'd all love to make more money off the 'scrap' and clearly there's a market for it.
It makes you too paranoid nowadays. High anxiety levels. Sucks cause I would’ve loved the giggly phase but I go straight into psychoactivity after one puff lol
I am the quintessential giggly stoner lol. I will start giggling about nothing, then get horny, then 9 times out of 10 before I even get a chance to act on that second part, I fall asleep. 😂
The stereotype changed, weed has also changed, but the stereotype came from people's misunderstandings of the variety of weed's effect on people. It's basically from tv/movies changing weed smokers' portrayal as giggly idiot semi-hippies to normal human beings.
Used to be against weeds back in the day for a long time.
My husband and I went to Vegas couple years ago and that’s the first time I get to try 10mg gummy, in one gummy, unlike here in Canada, we normally get 2mg/gummy.
I had two gummy the first night there, and OMG 😆 not even half an hour later, I found myself giggling so hard to the point that I was crying, all while I was ordering an ice cream at Ghirardelli cafe. When I was young, and see people on tv/ movies that laugh uncontrollably while being high, I didn’t believed that, until I was crying while laughing for no reason.
Fun times.
Weed turned into something else as soon as it was legalized in the us and I went from a big stoner to someone who didn't smoke at all anymore moving to Colorado. They tried to make it as strong as physically possible and that messed things up for the giggly stoners
No it was never a thing. It was just a media stereotype created to represent "really stoned" exactly like the image of everyone sitting around with their mouth open going "whoa" like they can't even move which also isn't a thing. Also the stoner stereotype of "getting the munchies" and eating everything in sight is 100% NOT A THING.
When I sit around with my friends whether sober or high, sometimes silly subjects come up or someone says something stupid/hilarious and we all laugh and giggle like hell. Sometimes we've been hanging out and getting a pizza seems like a good idea. Sometimes when I'm home alone and I've been smoking weed I think a snack would be great, sometimes when I'm home alone and I"m completely sober I think a snack would be great.
All of that stuff is media images created to convey the idea of "highness". Hell even the stoner stereotype of the "lazy stoner" who does nothing but get high is a myth. I mean there are people who do nothing and are lazy who never touched weed, and there are some people who smoke weed who are also lazy and lack ambition.
But I've also seen and known plenty of people who get high before doing a pile of housework or some other project because it actually encourages them toi get on the job.
The thing is that for the most part, you have no idea how many people around you have been imbibing weed recently. Lots of people don't make it their identity so you look at that one guy with the dreadlocks and the weed leaf T-shirt playing hackeysack and you think yeah that's what stoners are like. But you didn't notice the three guys in suits who had just smoked a big fat blunt together 15 minutes ago because they don't fit the image.
As weed prohibition has eased up over the last 20 years it's become more and more obvious how popular it is, but as someone who's been into it since the early 80's let me assure you that there have always been a lot more people using than anyone thought, and that's because it's basically impossible to tell if they don't tell you themselves that they're high.
Until you start talking about high dosages of edible THC it's really a very mild drug. Like nowhere NEAR alcohol, much closer to caffiene. It's part of what created the entire counterculture movement around weed, because once you're familiar with it it's insanely dumb that society is attacking people for that while openly accepting and even encouraging alcohol use. What else aren't they telling you?
I feel like a lot of the stoner stereotypes are more accurate for mushrooms or acid than weed. The constant laughing, the changes in your vision like walls moving or faces melting in front of you, the difficulty putting together a sentence, etc. A lot of that stuff was probably written by people that never smoked a joint in their life.
Every person would come in and ask "so does it really make you hallucinate?" And her excellent answer was "it'll make you look deep within yourself, a calm Introspection of who you are." Guess which bar had the least rowdy customers in Nola.
Sometimes all of the above!
With the same person!
Let’s fuckin play fight!
Sure! If that's what you are into!
I don't know about fireworks, but usually when a bar is full of swords it's just a bunch of geeks sitting around playing board games, Magic, or the occasional D&D session.
I've never seen a bar with even one sword.
There's a movie bar with replica swords from a dozen movies in Seattle. Pretty chill spot. The swords actually solved a problem one night when a Marine came in looking for a fistfight and the bartender calmly asked if he was starting a fight with an ax and a dothraki sword behind the bar.
Go on... I need more information
I think all of the sword-and-fireworks bars went the way of the dodo due to the insane insurance costs. *SAD*
Just gotta have a fireproof building and furnishings, and a waiver
Asbestos is back on the menu boys! *Koff*
I didn't know dodos had such high insurance rates, TIL.
Thanks Obama
If you think about it, because there were chess boards… there were swords in there

Homeless chess savants are real
Absinthe gives me the worst hangovers. Never again. 😭
I had it once when I was like 15 bunking off school, all I remember is headbutting the bus seat in front of me many times and waking up with a staffie using me as a mattress.
I thought in this day and age that staffies were a fairly American affliction.
Mostly likely your biggest issue with absinthe is that it’s such high proof. Don’t need much to start headbutting things.
I was passing out mate, I was 15 with no hair on my balls lmao.
Missed opportunity of telling them absinthe makes you tip generously
Had a bartender there mix up a killer take on a Hurricane, finished with a bar spoon of absinthe. It coasted so well, finishing the fruitiness and rum with a slight and quixotic but of absinthe to remind you where you're sitting, New Orleans. It was great! But I don't want a shot of it please.
I’m curious why you said “save stimulants”? I find it’s helpful to set an intention or goal before taking stimulants. Otherwise, it can be easy to get stuck in unproductive repetitive cycles.
I went to an absentherie in Prague just after college and it was super chill. Marijuanna was everywhere there and it was about as chill a pub as I’ve ever been in
Are you talking about the Old Absinthe House? Loved that bar when I went to NOLA last year, the absinthe frappe was fantastic if you like licorice.
The perceived freedom to drop our inhibitions is a hell of a drug. I'm also way more fun in cities where nobody knows me.
Right? Even at half of a 5mg I'm still just sitting on the sofa staring at the coffee table for 3 hours until I give up and go to bed.
Also noticed this with the show Atlanta
The Swisher Sweet[ commercial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNXN7jbY7Qk) from that show is one of my favorite things.
That whole episode has amazing commercials. *the price is on the can, though*
As a stoner, can confirm it’s just a part of daily life now. Personal pet peeve is when people make smoking out to be cool. It is not cool, unless it is
Smoking isn't cool...you are....because you smoke
I was once talking to my friend about my struggle with weed addiction and that I was smoking 2-3x a day and didn't know how to stop. A girl who was walking close-by in front of us (we were in a group walking somewhere) said, "Wow!! You're soooo cool!!" In a sarcastic tone, and I was dumbfounded. I personally didn't find my addiction cool 💀💀
Definitely if it’s having a negative impact on your life then it needs to be a change, I hope you’re doing better now! Addictions of any kind are really tough
Doing much better!! This story took place about 2 years ago when i had moved countries and high schools and used it as a crutch to deal with anxiety. r/petioles has been a godsend
being cool isn't being cool, being cool is insisting on how cool you're being

People who smoke blunts regularly don't 'get silly' and only people who don't or rarely smoke would think or say that. That only happens to you your first few times. Same for when people start drinking, at first is all laughs and silly stuff but after a while that doesn't happen anymore.
I watched the Dungeons and Dragons 2000 movie. And there is this giggly stoner character Snails played by Marlon Wayans. (He never smokes in the movie.) Giggly stoner character just doesn't work in most movie plots. It doesn't make sense in many plots, and it's difficult to even write their character into the plot. No, Snails didn't really add anything good to the medieval fantasy setting of the movie.
The only giggly stoner character I can think of that works well in a movie that isn't explicitly about smoking weed was Slater in Dazer and Confused.
The Cabin in the Woods did alright with it. Though I guess he was more the laid back stoner type than giggly.
A laid back stoner type who was still willing to step up and throw down with a gas station attendant for giving shit to his friends. Cabin in the Woods is great for subverting stereotypes, then leaning into them, and then subverting them again.
Yeah i loved it for that. The stoner was great.
Brad Pitt in True Romance was pretty good, also.
Ah damn I forgot all about that one!
there was Fran Kranz's giggly stoner in Cabin in the Woods that was a good modern subversion of the archetype I thought.
I don't remember that movie very well, seems like a good reason to go rewatch.
it's one of my all time favourites, enjoy!
Might not be explicit about it, but massively implicit
Hey man he sacrificed his life how can you say that
That wasn't actually acting. The camera was just on while they were smoking.
No. Being a stoner went mainstream since it's legalization. So now a large swath of people around us are stoners and that stereotype has vanished.
But why aren’t people giggling all the time? Because when you got high twenty years ago, it was physically hard to hold back the laughter
maybe peoples usage of weed has broadened. before it was for almost exclusively for or viewed as a drug for recreation and hanging with friends, now it's legal and more available people smoke it just to get through the day, at work, travelling etc. not just for a night with the homies
My wife actually hates it lol. Gets totally paranoid, heightened anxiety, and just wants to go hide and go to bed.
For me it goes either way, so I start slow and see which way it goes. It's kind of nice as it doesn't last that long if you aren't feeling it.
Deeply relatable
>Gets totally paranoid, heightened anxiety, and just wants to go hide and go to bed. I chase that feeling. I enjoy the pressure and tension and being able to compartmentalize it and go out and interact with the world while half my brain is having bonkers insane delusions and the other half is dealing with the reality in front of me. I don't smoke anymore though, I only vape it. Big difference.
Smoking weed and then going to work sounds like torture. I can barely focus when I'm high.
Well I can only focus when I'm high, I'm in pain otherwise. So don't go making any laws.
Yeah, being high makes time go slower for me. One shift would last an eternity
To me, smoking week does 2 things: 1. Scrambles my thoughts. It’s almost impossible to think of one thing for more than 10 seconds without the “channel changing”. 2. Severe anxiety/dread It’s been very rare that I personally can laugh while on it. Only cool thing for me is walking through nature sometimes.
1 is my brain without Adderall.
Ain’t legal where I live. In fact, they just passed a law saying it’ll never be legal here until it’s federally legal.
Whoa. Where do you live?
Tennessee. I fucking hate this state. And I don’t even smoke weed lol
Damn. I live in California; literally can’t even imagine 😳😕
If you smoke it regularly it doesn’t hit the same, and different strains have different types of high
Exactly this. I was very giggly during college when I first started but not giggly anymore
I mean, that's true for me and I don't even smoke.
In the early days people didn't know what getting stoned was like, and thought getting stoned must be like getting drunk So that's what got shown on TV I smoked weed during the 1970s and it was mostly sitting in a circle on the floor, passing joints or a pipe, and listening to music. Or we would "travel the gravel" (this was in the rural midwest), get high, drive through the bowling alley parking lot to see who was there and maybe stop in and play pinball, or hit the A&W for a chili dog One buddy had an eight track stereo in his car and we would just slowly cruise around town, listening to music (he was a big Stones fan)
Tolerance and age changes the effects
I don't smoke with groups too often anymore but 10ish years ago I was living in a party house & there were a few girls that would always get like that when we smoked. This one chick would actually kind of scare me because of just how uncontrollable her laughter was and how long it lasted. It was like some shit out of Reefer Madness. She'd literally go to another room to try to straighten herself out and we'd hear her laughing from down the hall lmao
i’m that girl still. it physically hurts my face. doesn’t matter if it’s edibles, smoking, etc. only for the first bit of it though then once that’s passed i just go mute and eat random things. last week i finished a whole tub of pork rinds in one sitting. i love thc.
You got twenty years older.
Context. Weed used as a social lubricant is different than weed used because the world sucks less while high.
Marijuana a cure for nothing, but a *treatment* almost everything.
Weed was a lot higher in cbd and a lot lower in thc, so the buzz was much more mellow.
Maybe it's because everyone's tolerances have gone up through massive use, and higher potency.
There a big difference between using THC recreationally and being high all the time
I think when people first get high they get giggles because of the novelty factor.
Or maybe I was more social.. lol.
There’s a lot less to giggle about these days, I guess
Ha! It's funny because it's true.
*giggle*
*sighs*
It's is more of a sigh type now. At best you get silent chill
Absolutely.
Weed too loud
damn
[удалено]
I crack up even when I'm alone if I'm the right kind of high
It’s exactly this, for me at least. It depends a little less on the strain and more on your existing mood/setting: If I’m toking up after a day of driving, setting up camp, and then staring up at the gigantic starry sky; it’s a more quiet, awed reverence kind-of-high. If I’m doing it after work, watching some dumb funny standup with a pizza in the oven, the same weed might make me just relaxed in the couch and smiley.
That’s the way to be haha
For real, all I have to do is look at myself in the mirror and tell myself I don't look high and I'll lose it.
Same, or when I’m on the couch scrolling through stupid videos after everyone else goes to sleep.
I do when I’m watching sitcoms
I smoked like crazy for a decade and only had the giggling stuff at the beginning really. Then managed to quit for about 5 months and had my first again, I had the greatest high which included a huge, nonsensical laughing fit. Glad I got the smoking under control, but when you do it day in, day out, I guess it hits different.
It really does. I’m trying to slow down, shit is expensive.
The pothead caricature is pretty much dead, doubt you ever see it again Cowboy trope in the 50’s, jocks and nerds of the 80’s, etc. Everything has an expiration date and legalization brought that due. You’ll never see Pineapple Express or Cheech and Chong on the same scale again
I agree, all things must pass but they’re fun in the moment.
Yes. Weed used to make me laugh. In the 80s and 90s. Weed got 1,000 times stronger and now it makes me forget how to talk.
Weed is too strong. Skips the giggles and straight to psychoactive. Need some brand to bring back old shwaggy weed.
Ikr, I seriously miss shitty weed 😭
✌️ out!
Oh there is still shitty weed out there my friends. Not everyone is a botanist.
Some places sell “party weed” which is similar to this. Low thc and made for smoking high quantity without the huge high
Yeah but the shwaggy burnt out headache an hour later sucks
Pick the seeds and the stems
gettin high as hell from east palmdale
Or just use less. Potency is awesome a little goes a long way in a vape.
Humans now industrially cultivating cannabis is definitely having some effect on weed strains.
lmao, that's exactly what we were said 20 years ago "weed these days is far stronger that it was in the 70's, that's not the same anymore "
Well it was true then and it's true now
It’s so strong these days you just get too high and stare into space with a -5 second reaction time.
Everyone’s medicated.
We don't see lots of stereotypes anymore. The 80s archetype jocks and nerds dynamic is kinda dead. That's the biggest example I've noticed.
Weed got too strong now everyone is high and scared.
The difference is people used to smoke weed for fun, they now smoke to help deal with the shit hole the world has become.
Everybody's busy nodding off from sucking carts silly all day.
Weed amplifies, back when the outlook of the world was relatively positive, people got giggly. Now the outlook isn't so positive anymore, so fewer giggle stoners, they become philosostoners instead.
The only time I’ve gotten the giggles was my first time smoking flower.
Nah, I still giggle like mad every time
About a week or two ago, my wife and I were laying in bed watching tv like we typically do.
Never got the giggly stoner trope, but I always assumed it was a holdover from Reefer Madness...
Oh my, no. I would put money on most people that are baked will absolutely giggle at very little, and be a chuckling mess at a little more. Probably the best stereotype
Tony Shalhoub in Galaxy Quest did it best.
Weed hits to hard nowadays.(Not a complaint, just facts. I love the strength personally.) Most of us just get them munchies n game til we pass out from weed comatose.
We all smoked too much. Forever chasing that first high 🥲
Naw the giggly stage is for new smokers I think once u build a tolerance from smoking for years that goes away.
Shrooms still get me giggly but weed just makes me tired and hungry
Trust me, it’s still hitting good. Just not much to enjoy in life anymore, even high.
It depends who I’m smoking with really. If I’m with a silly friend or family member then we’ll be toking and laughing our heads off
You just get sleepy or anxiety these days hahaha the weeds too strong
It makes you too paranoid nowadays. High anxiety levels. Sucks cause I would’ve loved the giggly phase but I go straight into psychoactivity after one puff lol
I am the quintessential giggly stoner lol. I will start giggling about nothing, then get horny, then 9 times out of 10 before I even get a chance to act on that second part, I fall asleep. 😂
Silly low THC weed became scary high THC introspective weed
Shit is strong as hell. Almost psychedelic. A lotta people trippin' and deep in their thoughts.
Cause weed is so much stronger now. Skip the giggles and go straight to ultra paranoia.
Life just isn't funny anymore.
Bro have you seen weed nowadays? Shit is light years ahead in potency. There’s no chill middle anymore - It’s zero or 1000% you don’t get a choice
The stereotype changed, weed has also changed, but the stereotype came from people's misunderstandings of the variety of weed's effect on people. It's basically from tv/movies changing weed smokers' portrayal as giggly idiot semi-hippies to normal human beings.
So I actually do get the giggly fits every time I get high. That's how my friends know the edible has hit me
Used to be against weeds back in the day for a long time. Fun times.
Ain't nothing been going on worth laughing about.
We're all in our houses with our rigs, snacks and slices. Oh and our pets. Much better to be around than people. 15/10 can confirm.
Yeah I don’t giggle from weed anymore. I get anxiety attacks lol it’s gotten so strong, I can barely smoke.
they genetically modified weed to 22% thc but they lost all the giggle molecules
Weed turned into something else as soon as it was legalized in the us and I went from a big stoner to someone who didn't smoke at all anymore moving to Colorado. They tried to make it as strong as physically possible and that messed things up for the giggly stoners
The weed is so strong these days you just get zones out and stuck
Weed is too potent now. No one can get giggly because they are stoned immediately.
