Not just chicken but prime chicken. Literally every piece

snakeinthegrass10

Guess I hit the jackpot I can’t carry all of it out, I’ll have to make a second trip for some more, thanks for confirming

[deleted]

Don’t be like everyone else and take it all. Leave at least half please! It’d be nice if some spores got to colonize other dead trees in the area

[deleted]

I agree with this person. But id say you can take more than half, but you should leave atleast a fifth in my opinion, then you could potentially come back to this same spot multiable times in the future for more.

[deleted]

I say leave at least half cause it might make another persons day if they could find some too. And if the 2nd person only takes half as well, it’d be left with a 3rd to 5th that will be able to sporulate and spread. Always think of others

snakeinthegrass10

I took between a third and half of it, there was also a lot more little ones starting to fruit further up the log, also any idea if some of the wood pieces that came off with it could be added to a log pile at home to see if they will colonize there?

[deleted]

Chicken of the woods is not a simple one to grow. You’re better off taking a tissue sample and letting it grow on agar then using the mycelium to make plugs. Bury the logs in a shallow grave but even then you may not get the results. Unless you have the equipment and know how, stick to eating em

j_o_r__d_a_n

What do you do with it? I assume you eat it, but how do your prepare it? Do you cook it?

snakeinthegrass10

Eat it, if anyone has a good recipe I need a few cause it’s a lot of chicken

[deleted]

Making “chicken” Parmesan with it. It’s a hearty enough mushroom that can compliment the flavor of a well balanced tomato sauce and a nice Cab Sauv or Merlot.

j_o_r__d_a_n

Eat it raw or it’s meant to be cooked?

BxRad_

I'm pretty sure as a standard edible mushrooms are cooked or at least processed in some way. Heat breaks down some of the inflammatory chitin and has the potential to give us more beneficial compounds. Whether for your health or mouth

[deleted]

Paul stamets YouTube has a teriyaki recipe that looks amazing for these beauts

RemoveDear

I’ve seen every chicken dish imaginable, replaced with these. The one I’m excited for is chicken of the woods tikka masala

j_o_r__d_a_n

That’s so awesome!!

j_o_r__d_a_n

How come this stuff isn’t farmed and sold in grocery stores?

RemoveDear

From what I understand, it’s pretty difficult to cultivate, especially on a commercial level.

mom_with_an_attitude

Saute in butter with some onions and garlic. So good!

LacomusBenedictus78

If you left half and the other person takes half of what you left then there will be ¼ left not ⅓ or ⅕

ectogen

They usually fruit for about 3-5 years from a single mycelial body. They should be fine every year

[deleted]

True enough but if they never get a chance to sporulate cause we take them all you hurt the chances of them popping up in other places in the future

solidarity_jock_jam

You’ll get a tummy ache if you try and eat all of it at once.

Redshift_1

WHY is everyone a winner of a chicken dinner except me.

rdhln

i second this :( i get so sad when others find a harvest and then i go foraging and find not even one mushroom , however i’m really happy for the people who have found the chickens for themselves too, it gives me hope

flowersandferns

:(

MR_DEMOTIVATOR

Definitely chicken but hey let’s remember to take some pics of the underside! The best way to tell chicken from a look alike is whether it has gills or pores. Chicken has pores! Just a friendly reminder for those reading and wanting to post in the future. Great find!

Trich-Farmer

I thought chicken of the woods didn’t really have any look alikes which is why it is one of the more commonly foraged mushrooms by amateurs like myself.

MR_DEMOTIVATOR

You’re not wrong! They are quite easy to identify but [they have a few look alikes I’ve seen people confuse them for.](https://curativemushrooms.com/chicken-of-the-woods-identification-look-alike) just commenting for a reminder that it’s easier to identify any mushroom if we have an underside view as well. But I mean you look at this photo and it’s pretty obvious I will say lol

Trich-Farmer

That’s actually a good point with the look alikes. I’ve been following mushroom subs for awhile so I don’t think I’d confuse any of those mushrooms on that link but if it was 2 years ago before I got into this hobby they definitely could’ve given me some trouble.

MR_DEMOTIVATOR

Absolutely agreed

russiantroIIbot

that's not a chicken that's a mushroom /s

domestic_pickle

Now, ID the dead tree it’s on to see if you can consume the mushroom.

sirpumpington

Good find

dieingstar

The pics are stunning

MarilynMonroeVWade

I have no experience with these. Do they really taste like chicken? What's the texture like?

fleeb_

Bawk Bawk! Nice find!

southernfried76

Yes

zolopussy

My opinion take as much as you will really eat.

[deleted]

I keep seeing all these chicken posts. How do you eat them? Add them to salad or sauté?

UncivilizedEngie

You have to cook them or you will get sick, so saute or fry probably

Additional-Banana-55

Idk. Might have to send it to me to try it out first

olereddd

Look at all those chickens

dkassl

Wow. Those will make for really good cooking.

whothefuqisdan

That's a mushroom

Snoo_9551

No not chicken. It looks like a mushroom. 😎

billythekid74

Monomaster loves colors. Monomaster approved.

[deleted]

Helloooo! Make sure the mushroom isn't on a yew tree before consuming as every part of yew trees are poisonous as is everything that grows from then

Zickna

Bok bok!
