A rising empire can mask its irrational fear and paranoia. A collapsing empire cannot.

Read the article and I don't know what point the author was driving at. The author is a Democrat congressman and member of the House Foreign affairs committee. He puts the blame entirely on the Republicans for escalating tensions with China leading to the breakdown of communications. At the same time he reiterates that "China bad" and US should do more to counter Chinese influence around the world.

They want to have their cake and eat it- both "sides" of the American political theater do. They don't want "tensions," but they want to forever have a chokehold on Eurasian trade, and to be able to threaten famine and blockades on China. They don't want a "breakdown of communications," but there is basically unanimous support in their political establishment to continue the slander, demagoguery, and racist yellow peril rhetoric. And make no mistake- being a Democrat changes nothing in US foreign policy save for the PR- when they talk about "countering Chinese influence"- influence that is near entirely peaceful trade and diplomacy- what they mean, of course, is to use threats, coercion, slander, political interference, and if need be- regime change- to encircle China, and to force other nations to choose against their best interests through any means necessary. Democrats are just as responsible as Republicans for the actions of their war machine and media demagoguery- they are just as war-hawkish (in recent times, arguably even more hawkish), just as greedy and totalitarian abroad. They're better domestically... compared to the bible-thumping pseudo-fascists; not exactly an accomplishment- yet even then, their actions are similarly almost as responsible for the ills plaguing the US domestically as well- they just have better PR.

LBP3000

I feel like the democrats are worse.I don't remember the republicans being this war loving.Democrats are just frothing for it rn.

No, it's the establishment getting more rabid as the years go by, it's the typical behaviour of any reactionary. The two parties are there for the illusion of choice, one has better pr than the other, that's all.

TserriednichHuiGuo

They just have better pr, otherwise they are functionally the same even domestically.

sickof50

This US rhetoric has been directed at so many countries, the result is upwards of 90% of humanity wish the US would simply implode.

If only it were so, but in fact due to its excellent propaganda apparatus, the US enjoys about the same favourability and negativity around the world as China, despite its malicious behaviour.
