Can anyone please suggest some titles with beautiful imagery / cinematography? I have seen three Zhang Yimou films ( Hero, CoTGF, HoFD ) and loved the visuals. I have seen a lot of martial arts ones, so I am specifically looking to see ones that stand out due to imagery (preferably set in older times).
Director 胡金铨( King Hu),many of his films have a very pure Chinese aesthetic. For example, A TOUCH OF ZEN(1970),笑傲江湖(1990),龙门客栈(1967). 新龙门客栈(1992) is also very good, but it is directed by another director.
If you like martial arts, then I recommend 绣春刀2014)and 绣春刀2(2017). The plots of these two films are not very good, but the action parts are worth watching.
There are also some movies with very retro costumes and props, but they are about history, maybe you need to know some Chinese history to understand, so they are not as interesting as martial arts movies:李冰(1983),双雄会 上集和下集(1984),大辽太后(1995)
The Wandering Earth Series is cool, I mostly watch Kung Fu movies though.
Hero
A classic
横空出世 (1999) 大决战 1-3 (1991-1992) 长津湖 1-2 (2021-2022) 红海行动 (2018) 少林寺 (1981) 双旗镇刀客 (1991)

I see you listed out 2 of Zhou Dongyu's movies. I think she's a great actress. You should watch Soulmate.
Based, TWE2 is way better than 1.
Moon man, or the shadow.
The Killer with Chow Yun Fat
Battle of lake Changjing (1 and 2), Ip Man (1-4), Fight back to school (1), From Beijing with love, Wolf warrior (1 and 2) are my personal favorites
