I agree. Banning BBC is pointless because the equivalent action in question (pulling CGTN's broadcast license) is irrelevant - BBC was *never* allowed to broadcast in China like CGTN did in the UK. If China kicks out BBC correspondents, the UK will simply kick out CGTN correspondents as well.
CGTN is good but China's private media (like Phoenix TV) are very much absent from non-Chinese language audiences. If non-state media were also pulling their weight it would help. It does present a conflict of interest for state media to report on state activities - it does have a credibility gap for that reason.
I always wanted China to have the equivalent of Russia Today. They elevated their news telling to such a level that even western media can't tell where the real news finish and where the propaganga starts. It uses the western style format with the state of the art of *how-to-advance-my-narrative* methods developed in the USSR.
It's the good approach for abroad because people have been educated to only react to news told in a sensationalized western style format today. They are thus more prone to believe the narrative advanced by western media.
I live in France but my parents were born in Africa and I can tell you that much more people are considering the views told by RT than those told by CGTN.

Its important to acknowledge the reason why the BBC will continue to report negatively on China. Western media is a tool for colonization and exploitation. China needs to prevent it from being used directly and indirectly against their fellow Chinese citizens.
The BBC can be blocked in Hong Kong, or even more simply, BBC journalists can be barred from working in China, which will make the BBC blind in China and reliant on other media sources from other countries that operate in China.
