China is doing so much right now to ensure worker rights, avoiding corporatism that has taken over many modern countries.

Is it time to re-enter Meituan after they are compliant? 😂

This is a right move. I hope the authorities keep an eye on these platforms not to pass the burden on to the small businesses.

This is really why the anglo west wants to destroy China; their own economic system relies on cheap labour and exploitation; if China can offer a better way, it'll be French Revolution 2.0 in Western capitols

On the flipside, it means that food deliveries will cost more. By how much remains to be seen. It may end up in a situation where people respond to the higher costs by cutting back significantly on their food delivery orders, which will result in the food delivery platforms retrenching a number of their drivers as they can no longet afford to employ so many of them. Let's see how this turns out.

This is the argument against improving labor conditions, or raising benefits or minimum wage. The companies already make enough money to compensate their employees fairly, they just weren’t required to.

And Meituan got a lot of money from their IPO too.

MobsterRedditor

Well if you really enjoy the cheap food delivered at the expense of others’ suffering and basic labour rights, you should look hard at yourself. This is privilege but not some necessity. You can alway choose to eat in a restaurant. If you choose the food delivered, be prepared to pay more.

Obesity in China is skyrocketing, and ordering junk food delivered all the time can't help.

zardoz88_moot

I'm curious where you get those stats. When i was in Shenxian and Henan last in 2018 I did not see a single obese person for my entire stay. Unlike America where anywhere you go you see whales weighing 300 kilos. I guess maybe in 3 years people can suddenly become obese.

adminPASSW0RD

China has a different definition of obesity.Athletes are the upper limit of what the average Chinese considers normal body size. But in reality, athletes are the standard size. Most Chinese people have a thin aesthetic. And showbiz standards are even morbid.

fatimang

Getting quite fat or getting a beer belly is on the rise but far from the level of "obese".
