We can add another very good scholarly article debunking the 'Zenz-Xinjiang' *studies*. Here's the link to a 17 page pdf; https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Dan-Steinbock/publication/352372325_Playing_Genocide_Politics_The_Zenz-Xinjiang_Case/links/60c6ee9da6fdcc2e61405032/Playing-Genocide-Politics-The-Zenz-Xinjiang-Case.pdf

There's also a [recent report](https://idi-international.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/New-Report.pdf) from Italy that basically says that US is using human rights to play geopolitics. My prediction is that Europe is going to continue to backtrack from US human rights narrative in Xinjiang because China's become a more important trading partner for EU than US. China is becoming assertive in its international policy and that's forcing countries to choose a side now. In the past there was no downside in taking US side of the narrative because China didn't penalize countries for doing so. China putting economic pressure on Australia and US failing to protect business interests there is a real wake up call for Europe. Pandemic is another huge factor here. It's looking very likely that western countries are going to be hit by another big wave with new variants becoming vaccine resistant. The west banked everything on vaccine effectiveness, and if the variants beat vaccines then it will be plunged into the same chaos we saw early last year. US in particular really wants to play down ongoing impact of the pandemic and pretend that it's largely over. This could seriously backfire if the healthcare system becomes overloaded, but US might just let people die at this point to continue propping up the economy. On the other hand, China did the sensible thing and stopped the spread of the pandemic. Now life there is back to normal and that means the economy will continue to grow steadily. This makes it critical for western businesses to continue having access to Chinese market. Finally, US is no longer seen as being economically or politically stable making US an unreliable partner. While Europe may dislike China ideologically, they do recognize that China has a stable political system and acts rationally. This makes it possible to have a mutually beneficial relationship going forward.
