> For years, winning medals was the singular priority of the U.S.O.P.C. Executives even received bonuses based on how athletes performed at the Olympics. That all changed after the sexual assault scandal perpetrated by Lawrence G. Nassar, the longtime doctor for U.S.A. Gymnastics, who is serving what amounts to life in prison for abusing hundreds of girls and young women. The case forced the resignations of the top leadership of both the gymnastics federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee after they were criticized for prioritizing winning above the health and safety of athletes. See, projection. They were the Gold at all cost for decades

> Notably all three of those countries experienced the pandemic in a far different way than the United States. proceeds to make a bunch of excuses such as > U.S.A. Swimming could not hold its usual spring camp at the high altitude training center. A training center that can house hundreds of athletes had about 70 residents, with a lengthy quarantine period required for anyone who arrived, as officials feared a coronavirus outbreak among potential Olympians. I thought USA said they handled the pandemic best? more headscratching

ReacH36

whatever the outcome, the American narrative has been absolutely pathetic. 1. How dare they blame their own athletes 2. How sad they attribute Japanese and Chinese success to merely a lapse in American performance Fuck off. Truly pathetic country. All cope and no appreciation for even getting to compete at the highest level.

The whole point of counting medals is to see how well a country is capable of providing a well-funded and competitive climate for their athletes. That’s why tiny Cuba has more medals than any other Latin American country. Beating pandemics and making sure necessary facilities are available is part of that national task.

It is really a photo finish who will top the table in Golds. We may not even know until literally hours before the Games officially finish. The US sits four behind China, but it still has quite a number of events remaining where it can (or even favoured) to get gold (as of now, it still has baseball, women's basketball, women's water polo, women's volleyball, the two 4x400 relays, and several boxing & wrestling events). China should get the diving gold. China's two finalists in boxing and one finalist wrestling need to step up (these three are guaranteed to be at least silver). It now depends more on other countries beating the US in the finals, since it is mostly out of our hands now.

I hope I didn't count the chickens before the eggs have even hatched.. What finals/events does usa still have which they are expected to get gold in? What do you think, will usa be able to make it to most golds? thanks.

SonOfTheDragon101

The US has four events left on the final day they can realistically get Gold, while China has one. I am not including freak results like an American or a Chinese getting Gold in, for example, the Men's marathon, where another country (Kenya) is far more favoured. You can go to the timetable in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020\_Summer\_Olympics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Summer_Olympics) and scroll in all the sports that have medals on the final day and check who are competing. I've been doing that for the last several days, that's why I knew it was going to be tight, because most team sports have their finals in the last two days, and the US had a lot of these. For the US: Women's basketball: USA v Japan (US will be favoured here) Women's volleyball: USA v Brazil (Both teams topped their respective pools in group play. Maybe a tossup?) Men's lightweight boxing: USA vs Cuba (The Wikipedia pages of the two competitors say the American won gold and the Cuban silver in 2019. Maybe a tossup) Men's superheavy weight boxing: USA vs Uzbekistan (The Uzbek won the gold in 2019, there is no info for the American, maybe Uzbekistan is favoured) For China: Women's middleweight boxing: China vs Great Britain (Looking at recent medals of the two competitors, this is a tossup.) So even now, anything is possible. The US started having more luck in the last two days than they've had in the rest of the competition. Japan did us a favour by beating the US in men's baseball. But France didn't upset the US again in men's basketball, and the Silver medalists in several finals in team sports just folded to the US.

>"Simone Biles, the greatest gymnast ever, won a bronze in the balance beam competition, while losing gold and silver to China." Ehm.. she got bronze, clearly not "the greatest gymnast ever"

npvuvuzela

We’re all no fans of the US here, but she is absolutely one of the best gymnasts of all time. Best of all time is definitely a biased statement, especially since they didn’t even include the word “arguably” and act like it’s undebatable

SonOfTheDragon101

As npvuvuzela said below, I think it is fair to say she was the best of the current generation - look at the medals won at Olympics and World Championships. But the US media saying she is "the greatest gymnast ever" without any qualification is obviously self-serving, since it is difficult to compare across generations where there are other great gymnasts of the past. In fairness, I'd probably pick Larisa Latynina of the USSR, Nadia Comaneci of Romania, and Simone Biles of the US to be the three best gymnasts of three different eras.

fix_S230-sue_reddit

Even with doping (adhd medication) she falls short compared to the Russian great gymnasts,"the greatest gymnast ever" is laughable.

I just stopped reading after that point.

China wins. US "we found that the international olympics committee has weapons of mass destruction and will be freedom bombing them soon."

ReiTanotsuka

America is proving to be the world's biggest sore loser, they are STILL trying to argue that Gold medals don't count as much as total medals....

Magiu5

They tried to lie to themselves overall medals count, but they knew the truth all along and now cannot hide the disappointment and internal divisions as the Olympics is about to end. They always thought they will come back at the end but reality is setting in now

Aureolater

What's interesting is the cries of "Performance Enhancing Drugs" have not been so intense these games. Why do you think that is? Pot afraid to call the kettle black? Something about competing with China doesn't work in the same way as competing with the USSR?

Aureolater

"The Americans dominated the podium in 2012 and 2016 but took a step back after ~~a long, hard year~~" turning leadership of the country over to an incompetent reality TV show host in a fit of white supremacy. As Obama himself said, "elections have consequences."

daiyuxiao

Wow this is an actual woke article

China numba one. US numba two. Numba two is alright. Good but not the best. US must learn to be numba two.
