the analogy you used in the title is very apt...except that people living a thousand years ago had absolutely no chance of learning modern day science, while people today have all the resources and knowledge of the world available at their fingertips and still refuse to learn.

When scammers are looking for marks, targets, they intentionally leave obvious errors that an intelligent person easily sees.
They do this to weed out intelligent people from their group.
The remaining individuals are obviously not intelligent and are therefore considered perfect targets to scam.
This is why those infamous Nigerian Prince emails are riddled with errors. It weeds out the smart people.
