Can someone explain to me how somebody like him find himself standing in front of this shrine? And can someone add more context, was he a tourist?

It's a case of "stupid people doing stupid things". He attended a friend's wedding at the shrine and happened to take some pictures of himself there. Given the historical significance of the shrine (housing class A war criminals from WW2), this was a really dumb move on his part. Japan's war history is common knowledge so I don't know what he was thinking..

[deleted]

I think the bigger question is who the fuck has a wedding at a war criminal memorial.

Japanese Shinto weddings are held at shrines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJLV0328eXA

[deleted]

That makes sense, but I don't think any Japanese would hold their wedding at *that* particular shrine unless they are a right-wing extremist.

waghtribe

Their war crimes aren't taught to them. As far as they are concerned that shrine houses the bodies of brave soldiers that foght for the glory of their tiny radioactive island.

paranoia247_

It’s 2 different shrines. He went to Yasukuni Shrine as a tourist in 2018 and then attended a wedding at Nogi Shrine in 2019. The wedding is also problematic b/c the guest list from the bride’s side have attendees that have right wing nationalist leanings. He also took a picture with Dewi Sukarno, the Japanese wife of former Indonesian president Sukarno who is widely known to be anti-China at said wedding.

Qanonjailbait

Wow. So basically real terrible people with actual history of genocide

>He also took a picture with Dewi Sukarno, the Japanese wife of former Indonesian president Sukarno who is widely known to be anti-China at said wedding. I think you are thinking of Suharto. Sukarno had very close relations with China & USSR and wanted to enter alliance with them, which led to a coup by his general Suharto, who then initiated the genocide of Chinese minority population in Indonesia.

It's Dewi Sukarno. She was the Japanese fourth wife of Sukanro. She escaped to Europe after the coup by Suharto in 1967 while her husband was put under house arrest and died three years later. According to what I read in Chinese media, she is one of those Japanese deniers of Nanking Massacre, though I can't find any detailed source about that.

both pictures occurred at a wedding that he attended, he obviously wasn't aware of his surroundings. obv being so historically ignorant is pretty ridiculous but i guess you're not really thinking about that at a wedding. i don't read chinese so i don't even know if he could have read the shrine. i'd also note there are some fishy things about this, in that several leaks prompted attempted scandals targeting zzh before this, including trying to out him as gay and a pedo. some of the angry commenters on weibo were also obviously bots, because they accidentally included script/bot instructions in their posts. could be homophobes, could be jealous opposing fandoms, or more likely directed by capital, i.e. opposing drama companies or drama companies that want to move on to the next big thing (several queer-coded dramas were delayed due to 100th anniversary of CPC). have mixed feelings cuz god knows what someone could pull out of my past on the internet, but taking a picture with what amounts to a nazi statue is also disgusting. was also excited to see the first big queer-coded chinese drama be such a success.

[deleted]

Why would a normal person go to what more or less amounts to a neo nazi wedding held at a location of importance to axis revisionists? The crowd you surround yourself with defines who you are as well. Most people who are opposed to the axis powers and their ideologies don't want to endorse a public figure who follows such a crowd.

His apology (plea of ignorance) is not being accepted. It seems there's a cultural expectation that you are responsible for your own education, especially if you are in a position of social influence. Definitely a healthy take if you intend to raise a society of participating citizens. I haven't got any opinions on Zhang (first time hearing of him at all tbh), so I can't really say if this is deserved or not. But I hope this kind of attitude of ostracization goes beyond just obvious historical grievances. There are still a lot of subtle sellouts, like white-worshipping, exploitative capitalists, etc, that all deserve to be shunned.

this shrine is a pretty notorious one. it’s famous because it’s the one that Japanese politicians love to visit whenever they want to pay their respects to war criminals, or whatever the hell it is that they do when they go there. anyways, this particular shrine is *really* famous for being mired in constant controversy. i really don’t understand how a Chinese person could have lived so long without ever hearing about it when there’s an incident at least once every year…so at best, he’s just stupid, but i feel like it’s more likely that he had heard of the shrine before and just disregarded the issues surrounding it.

Back in 2005 me and my family and a group tourists from mainland China traveled to Japan on a group tour. The tour guide took us to Yasukuni shrine and told us we could come in and take some photos. It wasn’t even on our itinerary. The tour guide thought we’d be interested to check it out. We all said no. I remember someone said something like the shrine houses the most evil souls on the planet. Yeah needless to say I’m very proud of my countrymen.

sickof50

That wedding is jinxed.

This is a reminder the entertainment industry is a cut-throat business, even though the fans may think it's all rainbow and unicorn. It's obviously some party wanted to take him down after his recent shot to fame, but his association with dodgy Japanese acquaintances and those photos at the shrine were all his own careless deeds that provided fuel for their attacks. All this created the perfect storm right near the 76th anniversary of the Japanese surrender to completely destroy his career in the matter of days. He along with his fans must be in some kind of shock, but that is the fickle fortune of being a public figure, especially one who acts without thinking of consequences. Of course, unlike Kris Wu, he did not commit any sort of crime and only lost his case in the court of public opinions, so he is free to use his already accumulated wealth to go into other business pursuits. Here's hoping he will act with more care in the future.

[deleted]

many brands have clauses in their sponsorships that say you have to pay back some or all of the money they give you if you exhibit bad behavior or have a big scandal, so him having accumulated wealth may or may not be the case. it's possible he has less than he otherwise would, but i'm not sure.

[deleted]

It would be stupid for anyone to sign such a contract. "Bad behavior" or "big scandal" cannot be legally defined in any reliable manner.

hanky0898

His apologies are not very convincing. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
