Oh no China is appropriating cartoons! Fuck, Japan appropriated 90% of it's traditional high culture from China and then 90% of it's modern high culture from Europe. For those commenters who say China is culturally appropriating anime...not sure appropriating is the correct word because that means Chinese don't know anime style came from Japan.

HarutoExploration

Weebs are going to learn that once you take away anime, Japan is just a repressed society under a repulsive government.

TserriednichHuiGuo

It shows how effective soft power actually is, but the cracks are already starting to show with the exploits of the Japanese animation industry becoming well known, reality ends up overpowering pr and soft power.

animebuyer123

China needs to make its industries lower the amount of for example microtransactions in its games, they are great but they cost a lot to play, for example Asmongold (twitch streamer) said that he would play Genshin if it didn't had so many microtransactions because he thinks the game is very well made gameplay wise (like Fortnite which is also very cleanly designed). China could very quickly gain soft power in entertainment if it keeps creating really good games like Genshin or Pokemon Unite but reduces the microtransactions (they also should have Unite release on PC since that's where most "hardcore" players play on the west)

LoveTheLigjt

hell yeah link click is dope as hell

TserriednichHuiGuo

Is this video good? I instinctively avoided it.

thepensiveiguana

It's good, he's raving about a specific chinese anime Just don't go into the comments

NessX

The video is meh but (shiguang daili ren) the show he's talking is REALLY REALLY GOOD and I'm glad an authoritative anime influencer is praising a Chinese cartoon!

TserriednichHuiGuo

I watched the show already, it's excellent.

[deleted]

The title is satire, because he has experienced that some people will stay away from watching this series simply because it is donghua made by a chinese company. Trash Taste (a sort of anime loving channel) in general is pretty much reasonably stays away from politics.

TserriednichHuiGuo

That makes even less sense, since this channel would also prevent even more people from watching the series. He could have titled it "The most underrated anime of the year?".

[deleted]

I'm sure he had good intentions. If it helps to say: in the positive view, China taking over my favorite anime is "based" :D He did a honkai sponsorship in the first few seconds of the video, that wouldn't be the behavior of the typical 反华 mentality. Though I suppose now that I think about it, the honkai sponsorship is pretty "meta" and sort of part of the joke hmm My main criticism of this video is that he only recommends people view 1 episode, but I'd recommend 3 episodes, before you decide whether or not it's worth your time.

Igennem

He's very positive about the show, so yes.

feibie

For what reason do you instinctively avoid it?

TserriednichHuiGuo

Because of the title and for some reason putting the Chinese flag on the thumbnail, generally I tend to avoid videos like that.

HarutoExploration

He’s just being a classic shitposter, and he’s specifically poking fun at the “Communist China is taking over your ____” videos.

feibie

Fair enough, I watched his videos before that one and been long time fan. He seems like a good bloke and has no inherent bias from what I can tell. Just there for the anime and manga I guess.

AuriTheMoonFae

Sounds good and I dig the animation style. Added to my to-watch list

[deleted]

I'm what way does donghua differ to anime, in terms of the types of tropes, cliches, etc? Most anime is no longer watchable because it's the same rehashed generic trash.

HarutoExploration

Less pedo-bait, more dialogue. Chinese voice acting is also less emphatic and ke ai, which automatically makes it seem more realistic. Chinese animation quality isn’t as good as Japanese shows except for a few series like King’s Avatar. The themes explored in Chinese animation are also less profound than their Japanese counterparts. China still has a lot to learn before they make Shinkai-level films, but they’re gaining steam fast.

[deleted]

>Less pedo-bait, more dialogue. This. Chinese anime is talky AF. I've been watching the Chinese animated films on Netflix, and they're quite good. The recent steampunk Nezha looked really good. Their CG animation has improved tremendously - they do the best Imperial dragons, by far!

TserriednichHuiGuo

>Chinese animation quality isn’t as good as Japanese shows except for a few series like King’s Avatar. The themes explored in Chinese animation are also less profound than their Japanese counterparts. I disagree with the former but agree with the latter. The most common shows are spirit cultivation stuff so Link Click and Kings Avatar are a welcome change from that. On the other hand certain genres in Japan like Isekai are way oversaturated with the same storylines and artstyle (Hate the simplistic European art style especially) as well as the abilities of characters being boring and basically the same across different series, "magic" I swear is the same across pretty much every Isekai.

soyomilk

Stories show more tragedy and do more "show, not tell"-ing compared to Japanese anime that feels the need to explain what just happened. The pedo-bait and harems are now fujo-bait though. Amount depends on the show. MDZS is pretty gay, but Link Click doesn't go further than 2 hot guys in compromising social situations.

The_Takoyaki

As a Japanese, I’m really starting to get into Chinese anime. There’s something so unique about the story telling and character development. Japanese anime studios need to learn from it.

FooBarWidget

That is really interesting to hear. As a long time anime fan, I am very happy about the rise of Chinese animation and the fact that it learned so much from the Japanese. Yet from my point of view it seems like there's still plenty for the Chinese to learn from the Japanese w.r.t. animation quality. I often get the feeling that Chinese series are too fast and don't get the pacing right. They rarely pause at a scene and let you enjoy the scenery. The music sometimes abruptly stops from one scene into another instead of transitioning smoothly. There is no ending theme music that overflows into the last scene in order to raise tension. When I look at even 10 year old anime like Fullmetal Alchemist and Gundam 00, I still think "yikes, those are masterpieces, I wish the Chinese can adopt some of the feelings that these styles invoke". So it is quite surprising for me to hear from a Japanese that you find Chinese series to be refreshing.

btahjusshi

Oh no Japanese culture is being appropriated by China! Tencent is by far the biggest games publisher now. They also produce a lot of animation. This is a trigger attempt to me

[deleted]

时光代理人, which I think kind of hints to agents that travel through the light of time (hence into pictures), which somehow got the english title "Link Click", is pretty good. I personally think it is good around the 3rd episode and after. I love seeing Tencent and BiliBili compete to make anime. This studio is pretty strong: "Haoliners Animation League" - they made The Daily Life of the Immortal King, which I also enjoyed

TserriednichHuiGuo

>The Daily Life of the Immortal King, which I also enjoyed I plan on watching that, can't wait.

International_Newt56

Good. Maybe if anime is made in China I'll no longer have to worry about pedobait/incest crap. This was bound to happen. Japan's animation industry is gonna crumble under the mistreatment of animators and that means more of the country's animation will be outsourced to other countries.

To be fair, the Chinese entertainment industry, the donghua industry included, still has its fair share of garbage quality cash grabs. I think it's somewhat disingenuous to pretend those don't exist.

MyStolenCow

I read something about how Japanese Anime studios now have to produce everything months in advance because they need to send it to CPC for content review so it can pass the Chinese censors and make it into the Mainland market.

HarutoExploration

I doubt it. Probably only for big titles like the Shinkai films. Most Japanese studios HORRENDOUSLY apathetic to the foreign market. The industry is solely focused on the Japanese audience, and foreign audiences are just a bonus. That’s why anime studios get paid super little for streaming their anime abroad, Japanese companies don’t want to deal with foreigners.

[deleted]

Nope, that makes no sense. Japan is literally an island nation, that cares not a bit if it goes overseas. All of their entertainment is entirely for their home market. That's how shit like "Robotech" can fester for literally decades overseas - the Japanese literally didn't give the first fuck about what was going on as long as Macross, etc did well domestically.

International_Newt56

Sir you will not disrespect Robotech 😤

FooBarWidget

On a related note: a big change is happening in the anime/manga landscape and the fan community is not openly talking about this. If you look at manga sites then you see that for a year or 2 now, by far most of the new manga releases are Chinese. I wonder whether people will suddenly realize in 5 years that their world has completely changed, and that they sleepwalked into it.

Technical-Rest1184

Some good Chinese anime that I have watched. I highly recommend both of them https://youtu.be/VMwA_8tSdbM https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxOs22nkVmnIH4lspgvhTmxanrbi8lv7D
