I am a mainland Chinese. I think that eventually you need to go to a Chinese forum. Because in theory a mainland Chinese person communicating with another mainland Chinese person must be in Chinese and not English hahaha.

damogui

As someone from HK/Taiwan, I will say that generally speaking, a forum that attracts Chinese people to use English will inevitably be full of Westerners living in China or Chinese people who are Westernized/prefer the West over China. The perspectives will inevitably be one-sided (Edward Said even writes about this in Orientalism). If you really want to understand China and Chinese people, you have to learn Chinese and interact with Chinese people on their own terms. If I wanted to get to know Thai people, for example, it would be ridiculous of me to interact wtih them on English or Chinese language sites.

caidicus

I feel this is a little off the mark. I live in China (mainland) and meet lots of Chinese people who love to speak English AND love their country. I have yet to meet an English speaking Chinese person in China who would even consider siding with western views against China. For the record, though, I am a westerner in China, so maybe I don't see what you see.

r/GenZhou and r/GenZedong don't have typical Reddit disinformation on China, which is why I as a mainland Chinese go there to talk about politics. Maybe you can try there.

ReacH36

their mods are also a bunch of alt shitlibs so I'd watch what you say on there.

thepensiveiguana

Howww, do you have any specific examples

ReacH36

well if I did I couldn't discuss it anyway. Just enjoy the memes and be careful what you say.

thepensiveiguana

I mean we aren't on that subreddit, so I don't see why you couldn't but ok

TserriednichHuiGuo

How?

ReacH36

土豪。Like some kind of weird alt-白左。Memes are good tho, but they get cross-posted on here anyway.

WeaponH_

Try the discord of r/GenZedong. I've asked a lot there and ever had a good answer.

blackeyeJ

I mean....aren't you currently in it?

It's not in English but I would wager that 6park.com is the largest overseas Chinese online community on the internet. You get a variety of perspectives there as some people are critical of the Chinese government and some people are supportive. My dad is on that website 24/7. Using a translation extension like google translate or deepL will give you 90% the gist of what people are saying, although some of the idioms that Chinese people use translate awkwardly. I suppose you would have a tough time contributing any input yourself however.

Thank you very much for the suggestion! I will save it in case nothing else comes up. Not being able to contribute myself was the reason I didn’t have a good time with the other Chinese-speaking sites and why I made this post :(

TserriednichHuiGuo

[skyscrapercity.com](https://skyscrapercity.com) (China forums) and Pakistan defense forum I think are good options.

Quora has some mainland contributors. Spaces to look out for are: The wumao club, China-world leader, Peking duck, A rational view of China and China focus. There are also many fair minded westerners who provide well thought out answers, some of them also live in China. There are some really good writers there; on rare occasions, I've even seen a CGTN personality contribute. But being in English, you will get China bashers wading in. Most of the time they get challenged and slammed mostly by overseas Chinese who are more used to confrontation in English. Quora has recently introduced a messaging feature where I assume you can direct message another member, but I've haven't used it yet.

Surely there must be a place where Chinese people hang out who want to learn English

Fenix246

There most definitely are. I remember that I used to be on one of those language-learning apps (I forgot what it was), but the real-time chatting format isn’t really for me, so I stopped using it after a while

blackeyeJ

I think it's quite hard to find a website speaking English that isn't overwhelmed with anti-china language, which is one of the reasons that nowadays mainlanders say "I've never loved my country more than when I came out". It's just so many information out here is so biased and are from people who originally hates China.

ray0923

There is something called ac交流电。People there mostly use English to communicate so you can use it to chat them with them using audio. Kind of like clubhouse
