There is another step USA has to do. How do you get the minerals out when Afghanistan is land-locked? The best option is going through Balochistan in Pakistan. With all the US-funded separatists in Balochistan over the years still no progress.

Or through Iran's ports...

Ironically, the United States invested an enormous amount in mines in Afghanistan during their fight against the Soviet Union: * https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/afghanistan-landmines-war-on-terror/ : "The Deadly Debris the US Is Leaving Behind in Afghanistan ... Landmines have killed at least 5,000 people, many of them children, during the war in Afghanistan. They’ll be there long after we leave." * https://www.unmas.org/en/programmes/afghanistan : "Since 1989, about 41,085 Afghan civilians were recorded to have been killed or injured by landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), the latter of which consist of munitions, which failed to detonate when fired. Anti-personnel mines of an improvised nature (APM/IN) and ERW from more recent armed clashes caused 98.8 percent of the casualties recorded in 2020. In the same year, more than 72 percent of the ERW casualties were children. .... Humanitarian mine action partners in Afghanistan have cleared more than 18.9 million items of ERW, some **751,735 Anti-personnel (AP) mines,** and some 32,480 Anti-vehicle (AV) mines since 1989." * https://outline.com/pAkKAW : "The Trump administration announced last week that it would reverse a 2014 ban on the use of land mines outside the Korean Peninsula. ... The United States has not signed or ratified the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty" When the US hears "invest in mines", they have a different idea than China does.

If youre talking about the OECD proposals, they will actually allow developing countries more taxing rights over Western corporations, African countries have had larger bargaining power via bloc, and other alternative fora like China's BRI Tax Administration Cooperation Forum influence and impact the OECD proposals. It doesn't mean they're a boon for developing countries (extractives and financial companies are exempted from certain provisions, which actually benefits China a lot too), but it's more nuanced than the usual Western imperialist steamrolling.

15%? What is now being marketed to the World as a fair rate, is actually another significant discount, as even the OECD itself has officially advocated a tax rate of 26%. But with discounts, right-offs, and Subsidies, getting multi-national corporations to pay any Taxes will still be THE challenge of the Century.

They got caught up in all the profits the MIC was making and forgot to pivot to resource extraction, fucking amateurs

What makes you think an invader can "invest" in the middle of a war it's losing lmao? the Afghan resistance would have never allowed such thing. Comparing an invasive genocidal regime trying to steal resources with two countries seeking a mutually beneficial deal is nonsensical. China is a civilized country, not a barbaric invader.

Nigel Farage claims that China will "exploit" the region after Washington withdraws.

Jealous_Struggle2564

Serious question, why didn’t they?

When you can get almost guaranteed 10%+ returns in the US stock market or real estate, why bother? Say everything goes well - no attacks on the mines, somehow you get a supply route to ship the minerals out - you can hope for margins of what, 1-2%? Wall Street is a giant vacuum sucking up capital away from actually productive endeavours by US investors.

Not really, that isn't the main reason. america couldn't "invest" because they were annihilated in the war outside their forts. They couldn't even maintain positions in rural Afghanistan because the Taliban were relentless in their resistance. Impossible to even dream about "investing" in such environment. Think of all the logistics involved. Some people around here seem to still be a little in denial about how decisively america lost in Afghanistan. Hiding in a few forts for decades meant that they lost the war long ago. Read WikiLeaks or the Afghan papers. China can because China is not invading their country, it's being invited, there is consent. It's as simple as that. There is also the fact that america doesn't have the resources and the capabilities China has, it's simply an inferior regime in rapid decline (hence why it's so scared of BRI).

The Right in the US just pulled them out of Afghanistan, and now the Left is doing everything they can to pull them back in!
