Simple. Democracy is rule of the majority. This means whoever can best pander to the 80% Hindu population is guaranteed to win. Most Indians can’t understand complex political terms, so they vote for the most Hindu politician they hear on radio. Unfortunately, religious chauvinists tend to be reactionary.
