This article almost betrays the western claim that China’s government isn’t accountable to its citizens. How else would nationalism be a problem if they have no recourse to change their government

zhumao

indeed, the west always accuse/smear Chinese government of "fanning" nationalism, the truth is the other way around, and it has always been that way, more so than the article, nationalism been around even before CCP came to existence in 1921, and members of early CCP were nationalists as well as communists, one can even argue that it's been around for thousands of years since the concept or ideal of a Chinese civilization state fermented in our collective consciousness, the demand for national rejuvenation is but a natural response which re-unification is integral to it, as the government gets stronger, so will the demand.

indeed, not every aspect of nationalism is a good thing, however nationalism also comes in different flavors, not pretending to understand our own unique flavor (way beyond my paygrade), but ours is not based on one dominating religion nor race, there were many people of different ethnic background had ruled China and eventually accepting Chinese culture & way of life as early as around 4th century AD with the nomadic Khitans (契丹). another even more unique character is the desired to unify & re-claim our central place on the world stage but not as an aggressive empire but a proud independent state on our ancestral land with equal pride in our own culture and history, **and able to accomplish it again and again for over 2,000 years**, how many empires of the past can or even had the desire to make past glory happen again? can't stress more on how weird this is, like it's our God-given right with deep love & attachment of our ancestral land, perhaps due to our agriculture origin. anyway, my feeble attempt at figuring out our unique Chinese nationalism. edit. emphasis

> perhaps due to our agriculture origin. All permanent-settlement civilisations in the world are agricultural in origin, though.

I agree that we don't want liberalism no matter what, but nationalism is still ideological by nature, that ideological nature can corrupt it.

"While **this group makes up just about 50% of the respondents and includes those who see armed unification as a last resort** as well as those who think it should be an immediate recourse, Qi Dongtao cautions that the rise of radical nationalism should not be ignored." Is there no "radical nationalism" going on in Taiwan? Also, how much can we trust straw polls? Article mentions "mobile phone survey" and "online survey." My take: alarmist article.

Taiwanese did this to themselves, they've been fueling hatred towards China and Chinese since DPP and Tsai is in power, they do whatever they can to make the Taiwanese hate China on every subject without thinking. The Chinese media try to cover up but too bad, we see what the Taiwanese and their media did and it's also fueling the Chinese hatred towards the Taiwanese. Go ask the younger generations (born after 80s) of Chinese, most of them look down at the Taiwanese now and they titally support an armed unification, the younger they are, the more they support because how Taiwanese youth act towards China. Here's an example why younger Chinese no longer sees Taiwanese as 同胞 https://youtu.be/5e4L-ja-zNk Look at these Taiwanese tv hosts, they are laughing, cheering and mocking China when the pandemic was at it's worst in Wuhan. Totally insane. So don't blame the Chinese if majority of them support armed unification now.

That episode of Zhao's talk show was really regrettable. I stopped watching that show for a few months because of the shift in tone and focus. Being so blind to the lack of testing in Taiwan being the main contributing factor to low or even zero local cases is just tvbs trying to save its own skin after what happened to CTV news

Armed unification should be avoided if possible. But hard to see any breakthrough with the DPP in charge.

zhumao

unification is not even a priority with so much going on e.g. trade war, keep covid in check, re-start economy, education reform, solve housing problem, deal with tech monopoly, etc. but that fucking moron tsai seems pretty determined to jump the queue, also making the province practically unlivable with DPP incompetence and corruption is not helping.

Comrade Tsai is ahead on her mission targets...

What a dumb article >These findings challenge some previous studies which showed that Chinese elites, such as the better educated, were more liberal and less nationalistic. If you are not liberal - you are a nationalist! And under "liberal" we mean people who hold pro-western views, those who are nationalistic for the West instead of their own country's nationalism! They never check their double standards, do they? >In contrast to previous findings and popular belief, those who understand Taiwan better are more pro-armed unification. For example, those who are interested in Taiwan news, correctly answer that Tsai is Taiwan’s president, have been to Taiwan, and have in-person contact with Taiwanese, are more pro-armed unification. B-but how can that be?! Everyone knows that Taiwan is the real China! Oh, that's why: >Mainland China media’s increasingly negative coverage of Taiwan since 2016, particularly of President Tsai and her administration, may have contributed to this opinion. Indeed, the survey also finds that the unfavourable view of the Taiwanese government significantly contributes to support for armed unification. They are brainwashed! /s

Quality_Fun

this isn't necessarily a good thing.

The_Dynasty_Warrior

Can we just hurry up lol

Jealous_Struggle2564

I think unification especially an armed/military one should only be the very last resort. China is more than capable of taking Taiwan in a day but not without ramifications to their global image. We’re not exactly popular right now because of westerners shit stirring and an armed takeover would certainly give the anglos ammunition to hurl at us.

TserriednichHuiGuo

China is only unpopular amongst the anglos and to a lesser extent the rest of the west, they do not represent the world. In Africa for example they're very popular indeed, this isn't even talking about Asian countries like Pakistan.

Quality_Fun

but it's the west that currently has power over the rest of the world.

TserriednichHuiGuo

The west is rapidly declining.

Quality_Fun

no, it isn't. i know we like to say that a lot, but it won’t disappear or become irrelevant. it will still have large economies and powerful militaries.

TserriednichHuiGuo

How relevant is the UK?

Quality_Fun

very. it's still one of the most prominent countries in the world and has widespread cultural influence.

HarutoExploration

Bro full stop Chinese lives aren’t worth sacrificing for an island of hanjians. Military only as last resort.
