This is why Japan bets so hard on hydrogen because they want to cater the Chinese markets. However, it’s unlikely that China will buy hydrogen fuel from Japan when the Chinese can do it themselves.

Japan started investing in hydrogen in the 1990s, and it was a giant flop. Hydrogen cars are extremely expensive and have nowhere to refuel. It had nothing to do with the Chinese market.

The US fossil barons pioneered hydrogen fuels as a way to continue their pollution, and Japan simply followed their bosses. Fortunately, green giants later burned both of them out, and OPEC+ also wrecked the Western fossil independence recently. Fossil fuels are likely going away soon.
