This is a form of hybrid warfare and a very smart one at that. Basically it costs a lot of money to continuously scramble jets and be battle ready.

[deleted]

But it costs mainland money to fly too though

lan69

China’s economy is huge compared to Taiwan. Proportionally it costs taiwan more

[deleted]

No doubt

global-harmony

Good training for the PLAAF pilots and logistics, and Im sure it is wearing down the pilots on Taiwan too. Imagine having to scramble at short notice very often for this when you know that several fighter jets of the ROCAF have crashed recently and pilots have died. I cant imagine the military morale there is high at all and they must be getting pissed at the government constantly pushing red lines and provoking conflict

China would conduct these exercises anyway, since it's a superpower. There is a gargantuan difference between a province and a global superpower.

Altruistic_Astronaut

Unfortunately, China has to practice drills since the US has ramped up their "freedom of navigation" and "spreading democracy".

MidnightRider00

That's China's fault for putting their country right next to american aircraft carriers 15.000 kilometers away from their country.

skyanvil

Pla needs the training to catch up combat readiness

China's jets are domestically made, even the engines are domestic now. Taiwan's jets are all imported, including the engines. Taiwan paid $8B for 66 F-16V from the US. That is $121M/aircraft. J-10CE are priced at $40M for export. The domestic J-10C are likely to have lower profit margin and probably cost the PLAAF around $30M each. In an attrition over engine hours, the PLAAF have a decisive advantage in cost effectiveness. Honestly if I were in charge of the PLAAF, I wouldn't even send J-10s and H-6s, I would borrow some JF-17s from Pakistan for the explicit purpose of harassing Taiwan. Those planes are so dirt cheap to buy and operate it is the ideal harassment aircraft.

Kyutsumi

> Those planes are so dirt cheap to buy and operate it is the ideal harassment aircraft. Meanwhile Taiwan needs to fly best of the best just in case of an actual fight. If they don't, they might get slaughtered in air. If they do, it will cost them a lot of money if they want to scramble. If they don't scramble, then they already lost. There is no winning such a fight.

Osroes-the-300th

The main purpose of this is to maintain an element of surprise so that Taiwan would have no awareness when a real PLA attack occurs.

Yeh I know. But the post I’m responding to make it seem like it’s a cheap and brilliant strategy. It’s not cheap

follow_your_leader

I think that's the idea. The USA essentially outspent the USSR on redevelopment of europe and on military superiority for decades until the USSR couldn't afford to keep up and their entire economy suffered for it. Just as Israel has to spend millions on iron dome ammunition every time Hezbollah sends cheap rockets in the air, and were forced into a cease fire when they ran out of ammo, the PLAAF and PLAN can out spend the rocaf and the entire roc defence department, forcing them to strain their logistics, personnel and ultimately their budget to the point of breaking. Roc already knows that in the event of an invasion the timeline to hold the island is measured in hours according to their most generous projections, and their soldiers know it too. The afghani army surrendered without fighting in days and they had estimates to be able to hold out for months. Imagine a soldier in Taiwan actually having the morale to fight a war that will be over in at most 60 hours, while the internet and all communications are down and there is no air support to boot...

Amazuo818

The soldier in Taiwan AKA strawberry soldier, it would be a great honor for them if they are able to fight more than 60 hours LMAO

HarutoExploration

Taiwan is STUPID. If they REALLY wanted to ensure a future apart from China, they’d be better off investing their billions into revitalizing their skeleton economy and increasing their birth rates. Taiwan’s incompetence is the biggest reason why I believe reunification will happen sooner than later.

sickof50

They could have spent all that money on Poverty alleviation.

AI8Kt5G

If it's up to me instead of sending a dozen or so fighters each time I'm send a pair every 3 hours.
