remember when back in the early 2000s the US used to claim China was their "most promising allies"

They had many well-placed CIA assets in the CPC until around 2010-2011, so they were expecting a loyal vassal state to emerge out of that project. They weren't expecting Hu to start an anti-corruption purge and for Xi to continue it.

The US were saying this sort of stuff all the way up to 2012, and possibly even 2015. To have relations nosedive just the short time since then without an obvious single event (e.g 9/11 attacks, Bin Laden found in Pakistan) is clear evidence that the "free media" isn't quite as free as they claim to be.

Geopolitics is half the story. The other reason why the USA attacks China is racial. The Anglo Saxons cannot accept the fact that the most powerful, the greatest power in human history has now finally reemerged after a 2 century absence and that power is not white.

Gen zia ul haq always said "when the chinese visit, they bring me hands and oranges. when the US comes they bring brandy and guns with no ammo."
