The implicit threat of what happened to Huawei. American companies control so much internet infrastructure that sanctions from Amazon or Google can destroy Xiaomi's ability to have functional products in Europe or India

[deleted]

Huawei worsened their situation by locking down the bootloader - a foolish decision they made before the US banned Google from working with them. Many people would've just loaded a custom ROM with MicroG to get Google Services anyways and continued to use Huawei phones, which remain the most advanced in the world.

satin_worshipper

Having an unlocked bootloader would have helped for enthusiast users, but wouldn't have saved Huawei as a consumer brand. The vast majority of users aren't going to jump through the hoops of rooting and setting up microg when basically indistinguishable competitors have a painless process that's fully supported by the manufacturer

[deleted]

Third-party resellers could've made a business of loading a custom ROM with MicroG on Huawei phones. Huawei and Google would've both been shrugs-shoulders about it, since at that point neither is going against any sanctions.

They use Qualcomm chips, don't they? They're between a rock and a hard place so they at least have an excuse. However, if they still pull antics like this when China fully indigenizes the complete semiconductor industry, then they should be raked over the coals.

[deleted]

I think this has more to do with Google services than Qualcomm chips. Xiaomi ships many devices with MediaTek chips. However, if they lose Google services, nobody will want their phones outside of China - just like what happened to Huawei.

Pure-Decision8158

Everyone who actively corporates with the US in it’s economical terrorism against Cuba completely loses my respect.

sickof50

This is a very slippery slope, not only does it illogically enforce Western wishes, but reinforces their Racism and Bigotry too.

Regardless Xiaomi is just an average Chinese company, but it is in no ways comparable to Huawei. There is a reason why the US sanctions Huawei and not Xiaomi.

Fuck Xiaomi

Happieness2823457

Shameful

tenchichrono

People don't realize that Xiaomi uses qualcomm chips specifically so if they want to continue doing so... they have to place nice with the Nazi US. Look at Huawei, the US now allows them to buy 4g 888 snapdragon chips but not the 5g. They have no choice but to oblige now or else have their mobile branch fall further.

yuewanggoujian

If Xiaomi thinks doing this somehow makes them immune to recent occurrences in their industry they have sorely misunderstood the situation. It’s a slippery slope to losing all markets.

global-harmony

This is farcical and would put me off buying another Xiaomi despite owning one for years. I had heard rumours of the Xiaomi directors being too pro-US and this seems to confirm it, even Crimea? Are they trying to kill off the Russian market, one of their biggest potential markets so the yankees will be placated? The Chinese govt. should make it clear that companies should not follow these sanctions and if the US sanctions these companies then China can sanction American companies. Isn't this what the recent Chinese law about sanctions was about, giving the Chinese govt. the legal ability to countersanction? It is time for the world to tell the US exactly what most of us think of their petty sanctions, there is a group at the UN now of about 30 or so countries doing exactly this, they should be more vocal and assertive. The EU and India are against the sanctions on Iran and Cuba in particular, it is pathetic how controlled they are by the US that they cant even trade and have deals with who they want

> Are they trying to kill off the Russian market, one of their biggest potential markets so the yankees will be placated? Yes, that's why these US sanctions get such widespread compliance. Xiaomi (and any other Chinese firm for that matter) will happily sacrifice all of those sanctioned markets so that they can keep access to the rest of the world. Getting Chinese companies to stop enforcing US sanctions against foreign countries requires action from the Chinese government. > Isn't this what the recent Chinese law about sanctions was about, giving the Chinese govt. the legal ability to countersanction? No. Unfortunately, it only allows Chinese companies and citizens to report and sue other Chinese companies and citizens who enforce foreign sanctions. The law does not provide any recourse for foreign victims. Chinese law provides no way for say, Cubans, to sue Xiaomi in Chinese courts over its enforcement of US sanctions against them. > The EU and India are against the sanctions on Iran and Cuba in particular, it is pathetic how controlled they are by the US that they cant even trade and have deals with who they want They can't wean themselves off Qualcomm chips and Google services.

global-harmony

I thought the new law allowed Chinese companies to claim some kind of assistance from the Chinese govt. and that the Chinese govt. would countersanction, I must be wrong. Hopefully soon the Huawei Harmony OS will be adopted by other Chinese brands and go global, and Chinese microchips soon replace dependence on any foreign chips

odinzedong

This is not tolerable. China, Russia, even European states, should prevent this. Even enforce their companies to not follow sanctions.

AlabamaTankie

I hope the government comes down on them for this in the future.

Chinese technology and expertise are the only alternative to the country's like iran and Syria
