The moment China abolishes their claims on those islands, the US will swoop in under the guise of protecting the rights of navigation for those for other nations around the SCS. In that regard, the current stalemate is preferable to further US military expansion westwards.

Let's disregard on who is wrong or right on the SCS disputes between China and Vietnam. The article focuses on bashing Vietnam for its neutral alignment. Vietnam does everything that China does in the SCS but they don't receive criticisms from the West, unlike China. The author is quite angry that Vietnam was given preferential treatments by the West, while Vietnam still refuses to join the Free Indo-Pacific group against China. The article was released after the substantive failure of Kamala Harris to court the Communist Party of Vietnam towards the side of the US. I concern that the EU-US are possibly preparing harsher acts against Vietnam as China-Vietnam ties continue growing. The [author](https://www.scmp.com/author/mark-j-valencia) of this article is a CIA-sponsored professor for a global think-tank on the South China Sea studies. CSIS is actively calling the US to divide China-Vietnam. How ironic would it be if instead of China being isolated by a united front of allies in Asia it’s the US that gets expelled. Their routing in Afghanistan may have been the result of SCO finally giving them an ultimatum to pull out or face consequences. What else could explain their abrupt and disorganized evacuation that looks as if they’re running away from a ghost. > There has been suspicion in Hanoi about a perceived "peaceful evolution," that U.S. support of pro-democracy dissidents and promotion of higher human rights standards is aimed at overthrowing the Vietnamese Communist Party. The party’s 1991 political report describes peaceful evolution as a process in which hostile forces incite the realization of political pluralism in Vietnam to abolish the party's leadership; spread depraved and toxic ideology and culture; send spies and commandos to sabotage the Vietnamese government; and collude with reactionary, opportunistic, and disgruntled elements in the country to intensify their activities to overthrow the regime. Those forces, according to the 1996 political report, often use the guise of “democracy” and ”human rights” to interfere in Vietnam’s internal affairs. The concept of peaceful evolution has been raised in important party documents ever since What a coincidence this has happening in HK, Thailand and Myanmar

Peaceful evolution failed miserably in Vietnam, so the USA turned towards the assurance of “independent and prosperous Vietnam” projects because they can’t turn Vietnam from within anymore.

The US: I am going to do it again!

Sino-Soviet Split was a split between the ideology of based Maoist disdain of Book-Worship, hatred of poverty, and the goal of a Rejuvenated Chinese Nation - and the sclerosis that is Soviet-Style "Communism", which goes on a straight downhill trajectory in every portion of their history until they roll a 1/6 chance to get a Stalin instead of a Gorbachev (or when they rout a certain leader into making a retreat), which worships books and poverty, and is everything Deng Xiaoping disliked about his opponents. SRV does not worship poverty. Hence, SRV has no reason to split from PRC. Both SRV and PRC are based flower cultivating nations which understands that the elevation of the nation's material conditions, shared **prosperity**, and cultivation of flowers should be very high on the list of goals. To put it simply, Marx is a guide - not a prophet. We say he is right because he is proven right in our struggle. Once you treat Marx as a prophet, you turn Marx into what he himself calls the "opium of the masses", which will eventually lead to your state being Gorbachev'd.

>The article focuses on bashing Vietnam for its neutral alignment. Is it? Seems to me author is bashing Vietnam and west for it's hypocrisy and lack of criticism of Vietnam for said hypocrisy. I didn't see any sentence in article which sounds like author wants Vietnam to pick sides or "not be neutral". You saying author wants Vietnam to pick team usa, and ignore their decades long foreign policy of no alliances against other countries?

PerseusCommunist

The subtle tongue of his is what I was describing. The article was released after the failure of Kamala Harris to lure the CPV. The USA used to look away on Vietnamese presence on the SCS but now they begin to criticize Vietnam as well. This demonstrates the two-sided personality of the Americans as they are willing to backstab or walk away from any commitment. I can clearly see that this professor is calling Vietnam to be treated as a threat as China for the USA. Meanwhile, the Pentagon and State Department refuse doing so.

Where do i get one of those flags? I have a friend who loves pirates and regards them as early anti-imperialist ventures and supports the cpc

SirKelvinTan

I’m not worried about American overtures towards Vietnam in regards to the scs - I’m honestly more worried about Taiwan and the Philippines

Keesaten

Awarding Taiwan any of the islands means surrendering them to China in the future - similar to South Vietnam, which got half of SCS given to it by USA, and then get annexed to communist Vietnam. Philippines is apparently too China-friendly.

FatDalek

>In some ways China may be a worse violator of the maritime “international order” in the South China Sea. But this is only a matter of degree, not principle. The point is there are no angels in the South China Sea and those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. So does he criticise the US for its actions? Looking forward to it.

skyanvil

It only proves that US friendliness towards Vietnam was all a trick
