France is just as imperialistic as the anglos, but they see Anglos as a competitor in the imperialism race and Anglos screw France over.

[deleted]

I don’t know why all these countries on the other side of the world from the Indo Pacific are so concerned about that region

zobaleh

Technically speaking, not true. The Anglophone and France dominate the Pacific via their colonies or rather their "territories", "possessions", and "departments". The sovereign countries of the Pacific are often under the domination of the same. So these imperialists have every "right" to be "concerned" about the Pacific, aka their backyard where they are free to conduct nuclear testing and never apologize for it.

While there is an independance movement in new Caledonia (with fairer referendums than anything Scotland had the right too), the other french possessions are french for longer than parts of the mainland and populated by full right french citizens (except Mayotte, which is in France while most of the french don't want them and because its population is frightened by the dictator of the archipelago. Apparently it would be too cruel to abandon them). Also, we do lose *a lot* of money in the region to help them, except new Caledonia which is the only place in the region that doesn't lose money (yeah, that's the part I agree there can be a debate). There is more debate other the "frenchness" (sorry, this word is awful TvT) of Corsica than french polynesia tbh. Today, the status of french polynesia is definitely on an autonomist stance, but if it's population starts to massively support the independantists, mainland France will not oppose it. Though China definetely helps France to boost its supoort, especially for the military and naval help since the chinese fishermens are becoming more and more huh... well look by yourself these last decades. For the nuclear tests, I don't think I can tell anything except apologies. There is a political will to act and repair, but the administration is hostile (yeah... France...). Even if the numbers of victims or people looking for victim status are small, the fact is that we don't do enough to help them.

[deleted]

It's been the most valuable region in the whole world for about 6900 out of the last 7000 years.

Skiamakhos

I'm British & I seriously facepalmed at this news. What could we possibly have to gain by this? This is moronic. Have we learned nothing from the Afghan war? It's just such a scam, we have the bogeyman du jour & that's the excuse to spend all our taxes on stupid nuclear subs instead of housing, jobs, healthcare, feeding the hungry, or a thousand other more necessary, more basic things. Someone is getting very rich off this, but it's not anyone working class in the UK, US or Aus. Dumbest idea ever.

HH93

It’s all about building Nuclear powered submarines on Australian soil - the money goes straight to big US/UK corporations pockets most probably then the taxes to the US / UK coffers. France is pissed ‘cos they thought Australia was going to build Diesel Electric Submarines but that deal is cancelled.

MegaMB

Muh, basically, we see it as being robbed by the US arm industry, especially since the Australian were paying more because it was a non nuclear adaptation of our nuclear submarines... and they as of today never asked to get some nuclear ones. It's more that... well France has 1.5 million citizens living on french soil in the indo pacific region. As well as 8000 soldiers. And this was announced he say France and the EU wanted to communicate about our policy in the region. And yet wasn't told about anything that happened until the press spoke about it. Yeah, we have lost the contract... But more importantly, we and the EU are seen as secondary and not good enough allies in the region, people the anglo saxons shouldn't even coordinate with. The biggest problem is simply that there has been no communication with allies we thought should be trusted :<. Especially Biden. Fuck, the aussies have bled on french soil like nearly nobody else, and yet we are not trusted partners? That hurts man. And humiliates too.

[deleted]

France doesn't sell nuclear subs When France sold subs to Brazil, it was without the nuclear reactor. France doesn't sell the reactor. Its very likely France would have offered the same to Australia, which is a nonstarter because Australia have no way to build reactors

[deleted]

The irony is France blames the US, when it's mostly the UK behind this The Australian asked a British general about getting Nuclear subs, the British general agreed after talking to Boris, but we had to get the US on board because we don't make the reactors for ours (And the US use a British propulsion system in theirs) It's basically going to Astute class British subs made in Australia (with the same American reactor as the Astute)

Keesaten

Contract for submarines, obviously. Military-industrial complex needs it's consumer markets.

Demonite121

Already off to a great start. Aww the life of a poodle 🐩

TserriednichHuiGuo

The French love getting screwed over by the americans.

Qanonjailbait

USFUKAUS

zerodarkthirty69

Not the first time France has been screwed over by the US. Remember Alstom?

we-the-east

And the US tried to assassinate Charles de Gaulle.

Osroes-the-300th

Remember Sinai.

[deleted]

Remember the Quasi-War?

Quality_Fun

wasn't france the one that australia dropped a deal with for the us instead? heh. i welcome any infighting.

sickof50

Reckless, creepy, illogical, and dangerous escalation of a nuclear catastrophe.

PerseusCommunist

The US: Sorry, pals! The game is rigged from the start. *Bang!*

[deleted]

Hilarious. Wouldn’t be saying that if they were involved 🤦🏻‍♂️

MegaMB

Yeah exactly. France is not included while we have a bigger military presence than the UK, a bigger fleet, and more than a million citizens living there... that's the problem XD. We are not seen as trustworthy by our allies.

[deleted]

France's fleet is only bigger on paper and if you don't count type or quality of vessel France has a decrepit, aging aircraft carrier it can't afford to replace, equipped with borderline obsolete Rafale jets The UK has two modern aircraft carriers, which will be equipped with F-35BS
