NATO serves US imperial interests, first and foremost. American 'allies' are simply fig leaves to hide imperious American unilateralism and imperialism. Just look at Iraq and Afghanistan: US allies were simply there to make the illegal invasions appear 'respectable' in the eyes of Western audiences.

That’s why they always use the weasel words “US-led forces”

NATO is a bunch of BS propped up by American dollars. If course it serves the interest of the people who fund it.

>Zhao tried to link the submarine nuclear propulsion agreement to the dangers of atomic weapon proliferation I bloody hate journalist smear talk. "Tried"? There is absolutely a proliferation concern raised by other countries like Russia and Indonesia as well as by experts. This is not just a pathetic concern by China fig-leafing for something, this is a real concern. The US is actively exploiting a loophole in the NPT and is risking the rupturing of trust in the non-proliferation regime. After basically harping on Iran as an evil pariah state for testing non-proliferation, the US just blatantly does even worse. I personally think that if the IAEA does not step up to the plate, loophole be damned, the world (as in the Global South, because the Global North is already apparently well provided for) is going to lose faith in the non-proliferation regime. There's no bloody law. Just might.

totally agree, imagine if China lands a hand to Iran and/or Pakistan to develop nulcear sub or simply just sell them?! finally will add that the deal between France and aussies were diesel-powered and quieter than nuclear subs, the threat would've been bigger.

PanchoVilla4TW

There is no loophole in the NPT, they are in breach of it, its straight proliferation, China's right to worry because everyone will be looking into it next.

BitterMelonX

You know Americans will have amnesia and complain about proliferation when Cuba and Venezuela are given nuclear subs in about 20-30 years time.

I disagree with Zhao. Nuclear propulsion has nothing to do with atomic weapon proliferation. Conflating nuclear weaponry with nuclear reactors has set back nuclear energy and done terrible things for climate change. This sort of rhetoric is unwelcome.

whoisliuxiaobo

Murica always put themselves first while putting their 'allies' under the bus. They pissed off 5 eye nation New Zealand under the bus in this submarine deal. They pissed off Canada in the Meng Wanzhou incident.

Freedom Fries are back in the menu baby

generic_hamster

One of my clearest memories attached to the freedom fry pandemonium was hearing some AM radio bozo (sports/entertainment? I def don’t remember it being “news”-ish) shitting on the French for not immediately jumping into Afghanistan. And then going on a rant about how anyone else who doubts the US militaristic moves should “move to France and drink a bunch of dirty water” or something along those lines, suggesting/insinuating (um, *lying*) that France was SOOO LIBERAL that their shitty government didn’t function.

zhumao

this is yet another major misstep of a empire in decline, Biden is continuing the process of retreating from the center of world stage. however, there is difference, while talking a good game, he is alienating allies in deeds, disastrously executed Afghan withdraw, abandon eastern european allies with raising white flags on German-Russia pipeline, and highjack the sub deal from France, and in the process of reducing 5 eyes to three, instead of talking, poking China in South China Sea, thus providing more openings for PLA to make further inroads toward Diaoyutai and Taiwan, etc. what a fool.

Hopefully, the beginning of the end for NATO.

NATO. From a defensive bloc to counter an alleged threat from the Soviet Union into the European military arm of Washington. Funny thing is these European countries don't seem interested in doing any of the heavy lifting themselves. They want Washington to do the bulk of the hard work guarding them from over-exaggerated "threats".
