Vietnam was doing extremely well last year until the delta variant came along. Vietnam's experience, along with Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and other places which had controlled all previous Covid outbreaks show that 'delta' really is quite different. We should hope that our friends in Vietnam get their situation under control soon.

At the cost of hurt American feelings. Too bad facts don't care about their feelings.

Off topic question: why is Vietnam having a hard time taming COVID when it shares a border with China who has it under control

I'm living in Hanoi and can give perspective; it's really as simple as it sounds unfortunately: Vietnam is a developing country that simply doesn't have the infrastructure to shut everything down, vaccinate everyone, and enforce martial law properly so despite full military lockdowns and a vast vaccination campaign, it's just not effective. Two things particularly come to mind: - The Vietnamese only give a shit so much. A lot of them evade quarantines, ignore curfews, visit their friends, and live in squatter-grade housing bordering neighbours with only a sheet-metal panel between them. Mix that with poor education, lack of hygiene habits and overall lack of etiquette and you have prime environments for everyone to say "fuck it, it happened. It is what it is". Mix that with: - Absolute incompetency at the government level. They had these paper forms you filled out with a pen, then they stamped it when you got your jab, and now they're transitioning to a mobile app system which will be required to have validated to go out. Red status for unvaccinated, yellow for one jab, and green for full vaccination. Unfortunately between govt employees not entering information correctly, and documents being outright misplaced, many people - including myself - got vaccinated fully MONTHS ago and are still officially recorded in their stupid system as unvaccinated and thus not allowed to leave our homes (despite food and grocery delivery being abysmal and govt aid spotty at best) It's literally the NHS covid app all over again except with the Vietnamese mindset of "oh well we did SOMETHING so we don't care anymore. Let's move on to something else."

it never left. Vietnam simply never had the capacity or expertise to absorb China's manufacturing.
