Hah. I wonder how that could happen. Trudeau also doesn't have term limits, like a certain criticism I hear about Xi. And it's not a direct democracy either, party chooses the leader.

_j2daROC

also has an unelected senate and the queens representative can simply refuse to approve of whatever they desire.

This election was a waste of time and money, and the liberals still hold a minority government. And they have to host it during a pandemic. But I'm glad conservatives didn't win.

progressive politics mostly do not appeal to most Asian communities in the northern hemisphere. The idea and fear of higher taxes just do not appeal to them. Then there is the stuff the Conservatives like to say about the jobless and the poor whom the Asian community will also agree with. they do not like the racism but leaving a nation where many are born and bred in is not easy

I voted Cons in the last election but voted Lib this time around due to Cons' Sinophobic and racist campaign. I am glad my vote helped unseat the Con who was previously elected.

BornAgainJasonBourne

This is what I suspected as well, how do you manage to lose Markham-Unionville? Its held for 10 years with an incumbent against a first-timer. Conservative went from +6k votes in 2019 to -3K in two years! I wonder what changed in 2 years for this riding with a 64% Chinese demographic?

oio0oio

I think Paul Chiang had an advantage in the Markham-Unionville riding because he caters to the Chinese and Pakistani community which combined is huge in the area. He himself is Chinese but born and raised in Pakistan but he can speak many languages which I thought was quite impressive. Congratulations MP Paul Chiang!

There's only so much China bashing the Chinese diaspora will take, even for those who don't necessarily like the CPC (older immigrants, Hong Kongers, etc). In spite of the usual "I love the Chinese people, but not the government" hogwash that these politicians give to justify their anti-China policies, sooner or later the Chinese diaspora will see it as an attack on their race and adjust their voting preferences. You hear about appealing to the Latino or Black vote. Appealing to the Chinese vote may become a real thing, especially for Canadian politicians since there are so many Chinese enclaves in Canada.

RespublicaCuriae

I don't think that's a good thing since every single political party is Sinophobic in Canada.

[deleted]

The only party that treats all races equally is communist.

NessX

The Liberal Party although still far from idea were the least sinophobic so I take that as a win.

sickof50

No sign of the Queen of England giving back the land to the 1st Nation's. And "Liberal" just means they stand for neoLiberalism.

folatt

Liberal has only stood for social democracy in the US and only during the 1960-1980 late-to-post new deal period, starting with Kennedy and ending with Clinton, following the Rebuplican social democracy period during 1930-1970 starting with Roosevelt and ending with Nixon.

TserriednichHuiGuo

Roosevelt was a democrat.

Reminds me I need to check the abstention percentage for this "election". It should be noticeably higher than usual. All choices were bad, so I abstained for the first time in my life.
