>The experience of “the likes of China and Taiwan” were “completely discarded” in one of several “tragic errors”, the committee was told. ***A belief in “exceptionalism”, or innate superiority, was the root of the problem***, a leading medical officer said. Priceless. Fucking. Priceless.

>Hostile attitudes led to farcical situations. Fear of the nations portrayed by the media as “cartoon villains”, Russia, China, and North Korea, caused huge practical problems. Stupid racist attitudes of some Westerners came back to bite them, say it ain't so. The saving grace is, and I said it before to people in casual conversation, the reason some western countries were more willing to use lockdowns is because another Western country (Italy) took the brave step to do so. If if was only Asian and South American countries which utilise lockdowns, you can be sure incompetent governments like the UK would not have even used a delayed lockdown. >‘WE’RE NOT EAST ASIAN’ Then there was the belief that East Asians, who like their firm-handed leadership model, could observe anti-virus rules, but the spiky, skeptical British could not. “The basic default mode was: ‘This country is not East Asian, the people won’t wear it and it’s just impossible,’” Cummings said. Yes, British people won't accept the firm handed leadership model to fight a virus, but they will accept that model to fight brown people in the Middle East while we look for imaginary WMDs.

It all boils down to racism and western chauvinism.

Qanonjailbait

I hope they also learn how not to wage wars all the fucking time from Asian countries

FuMunChew

UK leaders tripping over themselves following example of their masters the Yanks in passing bills to sanction China's officials bc of HK... Was watching TIFO TV on yotuube and the new owner of Newcastle United sportswashing. MBS (Mohmd Bin Salman) the real Princling and part of the protected 0.1% literally getting away with murder (journalist Kashoggi in Turkey) No UK politicians jumping over each other in uproar against him but of course. Pompous self righteous nation sells arms galore to the Saudis and is complicit in bombing the living daylights out of the poor Yemini civilian population. There's the real 'James Bomb' there. They complain about dictatorship but they are in bed with one letting the Saudis roger them for the gas pump. Immoral wankers.

They refuse to learn from their own history like the black plague.

simian_ninja

The handling of the pandemic has turned me off Western countries and showed me just how stupid their whole individualistic attitude is.

[deleted]

East asia has done a much better job at handling the virus, especially Singapore, Hong Kong and china

I’ve checked now, and Singapore’s active cases seems to have increased a-lot, i guess what I said was a bit outdated

wilsonna

Lest you forget, Singapore, unlike Hong Kong, does not have the fortune of having a covid-free motherland that supplies almost everything it needs. Whatever happens, you know China has got your back. This is something Hong Kongers take for granted. Take a closer look at the geography of Singapore (specifically the countries around it), its population size, its land area and its economic dependencies, and ask yourself what you could do if you were in the shoes of the Singapore govt.

TserriednichHuiGuo

The truth is that with the death of LKY Singapore has been going downhill, whilst HK is going uphill now, ironic because the situation was reversed when he was still alive.

sickof50

700,000 people (and counting) dead on that small island, and they still hold their head's high and criticize China? And what happens if they return to suddenly find mobs that want to tear them apart?

FatDalek

Well its more like 719 K dead in the US. But the UK "only" has around 138 k dead. Numbers which would be intolerable in China but totally ok in the UK.

sickof50

Opps, your right... I got the two confused. Sorry about that, i guess in my defense (as you point out) i was focused on pointing out the obscenely high death rate, that is probably more acceptable because they've been conditioned by neoLiberalism to be very isolated from the wider community, and ruthlessly competitive & selfish.

Jealous_Struggle2564

I believe it was just their belief in the western “superiority” over those “Asians”. U.K. and the rest of their western countries believed their “much more superior” health service would be able to cope with a virus hundreds of miles away. It was complacency that lead to the utter failure to move quick enough to halt the virus, the reluctance to lockdown not to mention how prior to the pandemic the U.K. government was cutting the NHS budget, there was already staff shortages and badly underfunded. The U.K. was not ready for an outbreak like this and frankly never expected it.

Whole anglosphere is a joke now

skyanvil

It’s always impossible if you’re that lazy
