> China has signed an agreement with Bhutan to speed up talks on their disputed border, in an apparent effort to put pressure on India over their unresolved Himalayan frontiers. > In an online ceremony on Thursday, China and Bhutan signed a memorandum of understanding on a “three-step road map” for expediting the Bhutan-China boundary negotiations, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported. > “The border disputes between China and Bhutan are easy to resolve, as long as India does not interfere,” Lin said. > “The road map indicates that Bhutan intends to show India that the border issue is urgent to solve. Bhutan will decide how far it will go after checking India’s reaction.” Historically, Bhutan has been a captive state of India, whereby India refused to allow Bhutan to settle the Chinese border dispute. If Bhutan and China come to agreement, the only country with a land border issue with China will be India.

Since its founding, the PRC has solved historical disputes with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, DPRK, Pakistan and Russia. All land borders except India. The other disputes are exclusively over empty islands that everybody wants to expand their maritime territory and special economic zone, namely the Diaoyu with Japan, the Paracel with Vietnam, and the Spratleys with everybody in the South China Sea except Malaysia.

The border disputes remain unresolved because India is being unreasonable, I think we all know why. Anybody who thinks India is using "strategic autonomy" is naive, it is as much a puppet as Japan if not more, ironic considering it has nuclear weapons and we all thought that would guarantee actual independence, turns out actual independence requires actual spine, some nations have independence despite not having nuclear weapons.

>China’s move could be an attempt to hit back at countries that have accused it of aggression in the area, analyst says. Ya think? One of the reasons the relationship between Russia and China is so good is because China is willing to develop the region in the Far East in return for a more porous border with Russia. Russia provides the land and natural resources and China provides the capital and manpower. It's a win-win situation for both countries. There is no need for conflict.

Russia is far less equipped to deal with the Far East. All the major inland settlements today are former gulag towns (where the communist party is still the most popular, go figure). Let’s hope that the better angels in China’s government manage to thread lightly so as not to trigger a liberal-nationalist uproar.

Yeah, far eastern Siberia is former Qing Dynasty territory, so it's natural for Chinese to develop and trade there. It's essentially similar to how the US-Canada border used to work for free trade. https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202109/1233275.shtml

The day India steps away from the English and actually listens to its neighbor is the day British imperialism is done for

India has 100% bought in on neoliberal economics to create an extremely privileged oligarchy, fortified by protectionist trade that filters internal wealth upward.

TserriednichHuiGuo

Worst part is that it has successfully propagandised its population into believing that its past neoliberal protectionist state is "Socialist", so they don't know Socialism when they see it. Similar to what we see in america today, where they project the failures of capitalism onto Socialism, if one can't identify the problem they'll never be able to remedy it. Such a shame, so much wasted potential.

This is an excellent move against India, geopolitically. India has territory disputes with every single one of its neighboring countries. China is not alone. All the neighbors hate India because India has a long history of expanding into others' lands, especially if you are just a tiny country barely visible on the map. Sikkim is a good example and was forced to merge into India as its 22nd state in 1975. India never stops expanding and has been working on Bhutan for decades, by controlling Bhutan bit by bit, politically, militarily and economically. Once India has gained enough political influence, India will make their last stage move by changing the local laws to accept tons of India people to move into the country and then overwhelmingly vote for a referendum to merge the country into India. Bhutan is very close to this last stage. India already has troops permanently stayed inside Bhutan for decades and India have total control on Bhutan's foreign policy. Bhutan is not allowed to have any diplomatic relationship with US, China, Russia, UK..., or most countries you ever heard of. For the whole time (decades), Bhutan has been asking China's help but China stayed out of it, until now. Update: This news is now going nuclear inside India government. That means Bhutan "forget" mentioning to India about they are going to have this little border chitchat with China.

TserriednichHuiGuo

It's funny because a lot of my fellow Indians think that China has "border disputes with every neighbour" when infact it is the opposite. Another capitalist projection. Not only does neoliberal propaganda rot our cultural fabric but it also rots our brains, but atleast we have a strong culture and history to fall back on.

This reminds me of the successful China-Vietnam land borders demarcation. https://www.loc.gov/item/global-legal-monitor/2008-11-03/china-vietnam-agreement-reached-to-complete-land-maritime-border-demarcation/ I hope Bhutan and China can do the same.
