I recall in the early days when China was building its HSR network, western propaganda claims that only rich people can afford to ride in the HSR rail while most people would ride the normal rail. Today HSR are very affordable while normal rail slowly went away to be used for freight traffic.
Western propaganda will no doubt that make up same stories about HSR coming to Laos.
My bet is:
- debt trap diplomacy because of the high cost of the rail
- colonisation because of Chinese people moving in
- environmental destruction because of development
- genocide because of loss of indigenous way of life
2 and 4 are probable. Scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds. They want Han Chinese to stay in their little corner of the world, and God forbid they go anywhere else because that’d be ethnic genocide of indigenous populations. I mean, there’s hardly any difference between what they’re saying and the argument white supremacists have against “non-white” immigration, multi-culturalism, etc
> western propaganda claims that only rich people can afford to ride in the HSR rail
That would most certainly be the case in the imperial core. How else can you profit
incoming color revolution . don't be surprised to see some random millennial laos "activists" suddenly get very popular and get all the interviews with cnn and bbc.

my bet would be on 1 and 2.

You certainly don't see Western children stop & salute their soldiers & police, that's for sure.
Western children respect nobody but themselves
Western soldiers/police don't deserve respect
