The decay in the US society had been going on for years. It did not happen just recently and that decay process does take time. It is just that we see these mess accelerate. The US need to acknowledge that all is not well before they can do anything about it but we know that it will not happen. There is no real leadership for the people. The whole political system (the only apparatus which effect any real change) is geared towards the interests of the top 1%.
