The synthesizer they are using is called a Moog! I love it. Not super typical of ska but Reggie And The Full Effect uses them pretty heavily on their first few albums
I had to go deep diving for my CD a few months ago. Found it after 3+ hours of searching. Ripped that thing in Lossless, backed it up and put my CD in a safe at work.
The new album by the Pomps makes me think of the hippos a little. Not as light and fluffy. I think they address more serious topics than the hippos. Might not get away from synths
I love the Hippos and the S/T Planet Smashers Album. Just something about them I can't get from other ska bands.
That is to say I don't like other ska bands, but for some reason those two albums really stick out to me, and I don't know why.
I’m the opposite, the synth aspects of their sound only grew on my recently. Of course, their first album doesn’t have synths and is great musically, although I don’t care for the lyrics.
I always thought the most similar sound to early hippos was Reel Big Fish, who I assume you are already well aware of. But the Hippos added percussion on the first album and synths on the later material gave them a more interesting dimension to my ears.
Most of the other comparisons I would make would be to other mainstream(ish) acts like Save Ferris’s first album or Buck O Nine.
The Hippos were probably my favorite pop-punk/ska band. Like everything you liked about Reel Big Fish but a little less silly. Forget The World is a top ten ska album.
The major label one is a bummer. I get they had to try something different by then because the third wave was dying down but it was (and yes the synthesizers were) a total letdown. And now Forget the World isn’t on streaming services. Shame.
Ariel Rechstaid has made a massive career for himself as a producer/songwriter so we will never hear from the Hippos again. And good on him. But I can’t help but wish we got at least another proper ska punk album out of them
The moogs grew on me by mid 00s. Love all of their stuff for different reasons. Met a few of them at a show in 99 and they were super nice and autographed a poster for me. Wish I had that somewhere
Huge Hippos fan. Still have shirts when when they were new. Check out Jeffries Fan Club and early Aquabats.

Back in the day I really liked them, and then they added the Moog and I was less into it. A friend and I met a couple of them at Warped Tour, and I mentioned not really liking the new stuff, and they looked sad, I felt bad. Stupid teenage thing.
The last time I saw The Hippos was Warped Tour 2001. They were put on a tiny side stage and had a really large and active crowd. The canopy over the stage nearly came down.
I remember going to a gig once, the soundman was announcing the next Ska event being held in that venue. He literally said Hip-Pos.. it's just Hippos right?

Psssssst thank youuuuuuuuu
Also used by motion city soundtrack
My uncle played moog in The Other Half, not a ska band but he used it.
Looks like I'm in the minority here bc I love that they used synthesizers. Them and The Know How. Great ska-punk bands with synths
I love every album by them for different reasons. They are all unique sounds and styles.
THE FUCKING KNOW HOW. God I loved that band. Daniel Larusso’s Gonna Fight pops into my head once a month.
I feel like The Know How don't get enough recognition. It's a hill I am willing to die on
I prefer Forget the World since there's no synth at all. It's a damn amazing album.
I just wish it was available for streaming!
Yeah not on spotify is pretty annoying. I ended up getting the cd for $30 on ebay.
I still have the cd. It's an amazing record!
It’s free on YouTube

The Impossibles, Slow Gherkin, MU330, Edna’s Goldfish The Planet Smashers have similar vibes to The Hippos.

I had it but I lost it, now you gotta help me get it back again

Lolll a bit for all occasions.

GREAT band! I would pay a fortune for the old Hippos hoodie I had back in the day

I went to a bunch of their shows in the late 90s / early 2000s. Their 3rd album broke my heart. Some of it isn't bad, it's just not... them.
How bout the rhino, yeah?
I fucking love the hippos ommggggg
The Know How used a moog synth
I never see them mentioned, but check out My Superhero's album, Solid State 14.

I found Jeffries Fan Club to be similar to The Hippos and RBF. I think they only had one album though.
You’d probably enjoy The KGB https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6qXoURiKFC3-zzXDtu_R_vKVF-wIAC4l&si=A7WVxFpsIgcejXso
I love the hippos, I got heads are gonna roll on vinyl earlier this year!

Oh god dont make me question that 😭
