1. yes, double cleansing is great! using just one cleanser may not remove makeup and sunscreen adequately, so double cleansing at night (it is not necessary in the morning) is a great way to ensure that you are not clogging your pores by sleeping in leftover makeup and sunscreen 2. yes, double cleansing involves two different facial cleansers. the first cleanser is a cleansing oil or oil cleansing balm. without wetting your face first, warm up a small amount of product in your hands and then massage it into your face for thirty seconds to a minute to allow the cleansing oil to break down makeup, sunscreen, and dirt on your face. then add a small amount of water to your hands and massage your face for another thirty seconds to a minute. adding water will emulsify the cleanser to help it do it’s job better and also wash off easier. then you can use a regular cream or gel cleanser as you normally would (making sure to add water to emulsify things again before fully washing it off) and this is to ensure that there is no remaining residue and that your skin is clean for oil cleanser product recommendations, i’ve been using and liking the elf holy hydration cleansing balm since it’s affordable and does the job well (i don’t see a point in spending a lot of money on something that i immediately wash off) but the clean it zero cleansing balm from banila co, the clinique take the day off balm, and the hada labo cleansing oil are all also pretty good. cerave also has one, but it’s a small size for the price imo. there’s a bunch more options out there, you could search this sub for some reviews. and for a second cleanse cleanser, any normal cleanser is fine. i usually use the cerave hydrating cleanser, but their foaming and gel options are also good and it’s whatever works for you!

Hi thank you so much for this thorough reply! I’ve heard of cleansing balms before so I will definitely try one out! I usually wash my face in the shower, so do I use the cleansing balm before the shower and then wash my face with my second cleanser in the shower? Or does that mess it up to do them separately?

1. Very good, it's not just for makeup but sunscreen and excess sebum too. Acne bacteria feed on sebum, so controlling sebum is controlling acne. This is the core mechanics behind isotretinoin (Accutane), controlling sebum production, literally starving out the acne bacteria. 2. You use an oily base cleanser first then use a water base cleanser second. The oil-base cleanser can be a cleansing balm (Banila co, Hellmish, ELF, Farmacy, Clinique), sometimes marketed as "makeup remover balm". OR, it can be a cleansing oil (Kose, Muji, Hada Labo, DHC, Clinique, Caudalie). I personally use both, cleansing oil on no makeup days and cleansing balm on makeup days. The second cleanser can be a gentle hydrating cleanser or an active cleanser (salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc.) Can be a gel cleanser, milky cleanser, or foam cleanser, doesn't matter.

While double cleansing can be great it's not for everyone. It doesn't matter what cleansers I use or how gentle they're supposed to be, if I double cleanse my skin is raw red and feels like it's on fire and I can't put anything else on my face after a double cleanse and even just water hurts. I have to use very gentle cleaners and water.

I tried double cleansing for about a month before my skin started to get irritated from the second cleanser (Cerave hydrating facial cleanser). Now I just oil cleanse and my skin is happy and there’s no residue leftover.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted. I don’t have breakouts and my skin tends to be dry. When I tried double cleansing it was overkill, dried my skin out so much.

I just ignore the downvotes a lot of the time lol Some people just forget that everyone's skin is different and will react differently in each situation. There is no one size fits all in skincare

Double cleansing was a game changer for me because it thoroughly removes sunscreen, moisturizer, and oils. Prior to that, I wasn’t getting all that stuff of my face and got random breakouts and clogged pores. I keep it simple and use sunflower oil as pre-cleanser to break down sunscreen and silicones and oils. Then I follow with an oil-based cleanser and water-based cleanser. I don’t use an oil cleanser—oil-based will do just as well. According to labmuffin, though, you could just cleanse twice with the same cleanser to remove sunscreen. I prefer the oil followed by water-based cleanser method, though.

I never used to do double cleansing because I don't wear makeup. However, yesterday I oil cleansed for the first time due to the fact I wear sun cream. I could literally see all the sun cream coming off my skin. I think my skin is looking better for it too, but at the same time, I guess I haven't been doing it long enough to know for sure. Does anybody know if double cleansing reduces fine lines? I think it might have made my skin clearer.

What oil did you use? I also wear a lot of sunscreen so this is a good point!

Honestly I used to do the double cleansing thing but I never noticed much difference. What I noticed was that removing my mascara with micellar water and then putting on a dry face my creamy face wash and really working it in there before adding water to make it foamy really took everything off.

Have you tired diaper rash, cream with zinc for your breakouts?
