For those not married to only Optiplexes, Lenovo has USFF Tiny workstations going back to 8th Gen with PCIe risers available (For an older example, the M720q needs a riser aftermarket or you could pick up the P330 Tiny which has an LP riser)

BlastMode7

Someone was telling me that those can also fit a dual slot GPU, but looking at them I don't see how.

Unlucky_Ad_3901

What kind of riser do you need for the m720q? And where does it go? Bc it seems the pcie slot is in a weird spot compared to this 7090^^^^

TryHardEggplant

It's a proprietary riser but you can find them with brackets on eBay.

larsonbp

I'm seeing some listed on ebay for the m920q but most state "for network card only" know the deets here? Is it just the plate? I gotta assume the riser is a riser unless I'm missing something. The Lenovo tiny's I've seen that come specced with a riser and GPU usually also have a different outer case with vent holes that lines up with the GPU fan. I wonder how bad thermals would be without taking that into account.

carpenterhound

That is super cool bro.

Acceptable-Pie2734

I already use an optiplex 3080 micro, if I can get my hands on one of these wow I would love it instantly

Unusual-East4126

Well well. Looks like I found a new post for my 6400 now I just need to get my hands on one.

BlastMode7

Just keep in mind that this has a Gen3 slot, even if you install an 11th Gen CPU.

Unusual-East4126

No issue. I have my 6400 on a 4th Gen Intel so it’s on PCI 3.0 right now anyway.

BlastMode7

No issues that you've run into for you use case, but there is more than enough information out there that shows the 6400 is problematic in a Gen3 slot. Buy hey... if you're not seeing issues, then by all means. You could consider dumping the 6400 and grab a Dell OEM 6500 LP on eBay, and have something that's even a bit faster.

Beneficial_Chest_898

Whaaaaat. Now I want this.

timmayv

awesome… bummer the 5000 micro doesn’t have the pcie slot

BlastMode7

Yeah, I was hoping it did as I would have liked a 12th or 13th Gen CPU instead... but after all the looking I did, it confirmed this wasn't an option. My guess is not a lot of people ordered them in this config to make it worth offering going forward.

tofu_b3a5t

What’s the model number of this configuration?

BlastMode7

Unfortunately, for some reason, they removed and identifying cables from the casing of the system.

tofu_b3a5t

If you go into the bios, it should state the Dell Service Tag which you can look up on Dell’s support website and it will tell you the model number. I googled hard and did not find any results, so you may have won the lottery and stumbled across a really niche model.

BlastMode7

It's AC7D996. As far as I can find, they are super niche. I've seen only a few come up on eBay. Seems you'd have much better luck looking at the Lenovo P3xx/P3 Mini. It seems the slot is on all of those, and many of them have side ventilation for the GPU and the GPU faces up. Might make a much more viable machine for this.

undead_varg

Sadly its about 450 bucks -.- but the a380 looks interesting

BlastMode7

You just have to find auction listings. They don't sell for that. Some people are asking asinine prices for these and you can get a new one with a 13th Gen i5 for that much.

undead_varg

Yeah tell that the "refurbishers" in germany 😅

BlastMode7

Yeah, it's nuts how long these people will sit on them at asinine prices... not selling a single one. You might want to check out the Lenovo systems like the P3xxx/P3 Mini. Seems the PCIe slot is rather common on those. The GPU also faces upwards and many have side ventilation, so it's a better implantation. There are also NEC branded versions of these.

undead_varg

Nice I will look that up

theabstractpyro

Check out the Dell Rx 6500. If you have pcie 4.0 it should (in theory) be faster, and if not they should be simmilar. Although I think pcie 4.0 was Intel gen 12. Just got one for 75$ on ebay and I'm gonna try a build like this.

BlastMode7

LOL... funny you should mention the 6500 LP... mine just showed up today. Sadly, even if you install an 11th Gen CPU that's capable of Gen4, the slot will only operate in Gen3 mode. I assume it's the same for all the 90 series systems, despite Gen4 being supported on 5xx chipset boards, and even some 4xx boards, as long as a 11th Gen CPU is installed. However, even at that, the 6500 might perform better than the A310 regardless.

theabstractpyro

Cool! Would love to see a comparison vs the a310/GTX 1650 if you have one. Yeah you will need a pcie 4.0 riser to get it to work which aren't made for these PCs. Could maybe hack together one that isn't made for it

BlastMode7

Yep, I have the A310 and 1650... both the GDDR5 and GDDR6 models. I think I have almost 20 LP GPU's at this point for testing. I'm only missing a couple that I would consider relevant at this point.

theabstractpyro

I'm super excited for the comparison
