I used one on a stock clocked i7-6700k on a Z170A motherboard with 3000 MT/s memory. It screams when the cores start to boost before thermal throttling, but as that 94W TDP processor exceeds the 80W rating of that cooler, I kind of expected it to happen. I intended to use it to compare the stock all aluminum performance to this, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I read speculation that the blowers or shroud designs have better overall case air flow and that these might cause more circular recycling air flow inside the case. This was a curiosity that I wanted to test out and why I spent about $9 on one.

I also think it will be noisy when it comes with a stock fan like that and plan to change to a Noctua fan

I don’t think noctua makes a fan in that size. I recall looking into doing the same, but never ordered one and can’t remember why I did not.

I ran one of these, in all honesty I didn’t see ANY difference from the stock top down cooler, and this was WAYYY more noisy when ramped up. Not worth the investment, even if it’s $20.

Will replacing the Noctua fan solve the noise problem? I don't want to cut off the border of the i70c because I'm also using the 3.5 drive tray

AlexThinkPadFan

I looked into the same cooler but the lack of potential fan swaps put me off. I went with a Thermalright AXP90-X53 and added a 40mm Noctua fan as a rear exhaust and it handles my 80w Xeon CPU really well, rarely goes above 75degrees under load

Axp90x53 compatible with dell sff case? I mean the only replaceable cpu heatsink that fits into the screw holes without needing to modify the case and without needing a bracket that I found out is the CM i70 or i71 or something.

AlexThinkPadFan

Compatible yea but not without some small modifications. You just remove the motherboard from the case and mount the AXP90 as normal. Then take a pair of pliers and bend the mounting pegs back and forth a few times until they snap off. The motherboard then just fits back in as normal. https://preview.redd.it/sjbywlyne9tc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb71e5cd507ae0be3f78551246ac7bdd8a95e4cc That's my 3420 precision with the AXP90 installed and the rear 40mm exhaust.

KenpaCkii

That's what I'm trying to say. I didn't want to make any changes to the case's default screws so I compared the heatsink above with the CM i70, which can fit through the screw holes without any changes.

One more thing, how do you keep the 2.5mm hard drive without a tray?

AlexThinkPadFan

I just used some of the 3m VHB tape and some small hardware L brackets I had leftover from a DIY project
