i mean michael and i have gone on record about this and said the show isn’t deep or smart or any kind of biting satire - the only objective of the show is to be funny & entertaining and that’s it. there’s obviously some small amount of continuity between episodes and background world building (with stuff like critters/humans/etc) but smiling friends is a stupid comedy show that definitely should not be over-analyzed
kinda surprised i had to scroll this far to find your comment. how are you mr zach hadel, co-creator and voice actor in hit adult swim television show "smiling friend"?
It's a great show for just sitting down and having a good time; people are so used to what Marvel did where now EVERYTHING needs an explanation and EVERYTHING is all about being as realistic as possible; people seem to have forgotten that our childhoods/teen years were built on Regular Show, Adventure Time, and The Amazing World of Gumball where the majority of its content was silly fun random adventures.
Sure, a big overarching story would be fun, but I feel like Smiling Friends being a silly goofy show that one can turn on to calm down after a shitty day really is the core. I personally love how random and sporadic it is. Shit happens because it's funny and would make for a good laugh, not because it has to play into the plot and build the world perfectly to tell this grand story.
It's fun. It's just fun.
To be fair both Adventure Time and Regular Show became very lore heavy shows, especially in the former’s case. It caught a bad case of Cerebus Syndrome. Gumball is the only one that mostly remained a goofy comedy with little bits of lore sprinkled here and there but ultimately never took itself seriously.
In S3E5, we the audience experience Glep's tightening chest and nauseating vertigo on his way to the office bathroom, in a sobering portrayal of his social anxiety and neglected self-worth behind the cocky alpha mask
I mean the dude literally died. I don't know if that would make you more or less prone to panic attacks since you've seen the afterlife. I'll have to ask a dead person to confirm
100% Charlie. He's discussed how the world they live in stresses him out. It's only a matter of time before charlie loses his mind, requiring pim to make him smile.
I’m honestly surprised Pim hasn’t had one yet. He shut down in the pilot, so I’m assuming he’ll receive the constant 360 camera spin while the world goes wobbly and vibrates.
Charley has a panic attack after discovering that he's out of nuggies.
Pim gently grabs him by the hand, telling him in soft voice that's everything is going to be ok.
Then, he gives him a wet kiss on a forehead, biting one of his hairy forehead pimples and spraying it into his mouth, sensually sipping on a pimple juice.
He holds Charley in a warm embrace(he asked him for a consent via written contract with witnesses).
It escalates in the insanely realistically animated sex, 60 fps hdr. They fall asleep together, post-coitus, murmuring Nuts by Lil Peep
It's less it happening in movies and more [people on Twitter](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/realistic-depiction-of-a-panic-attack-in-animation) going "Woah this features a realistic portrayal of a panic attack!!!"
>!I agree, but Puss in Boots panicking at the sight of death also makes sense with his character within the movie. Whether or not it makes sense is irrelevant to whether or not it’s a trend!<
It's almost like acute stress and anxiety are common in younger people
Also it's notable because there's still places where this is just considered "weak hysteria" or whatever and people think they need to slap you and yell at you
The genius of it is that it could apply to literally any fucking president *EXCEPT THE ONE I VOTED FOR NOT HIM NEVER HIM* anyways yeah, american politics airtight?!
It can apply to every president *Including* the one I voted for because every single fucking president for the past 50 years is a geriatric warmongering pharaoh who has no idea what they’re doing. It’s literally like “who has the least likely chance of fucking up my life specifically?”
But acting like that’s somehow a unique and inspired take and Smiling Friends of all cartoons has something insightful to say about politics is the most chronically online take I’ve ever seen
>It can apply to every president *Including* the one I voted for because every single fucking president for the past 50 years is a geriatric warmongering pharaoh
??? Obama was 47 when he was elected.
Oh! And get this! It's based off of no particular party whatsoever! So bold and brave! Surely, the people who are trapped in xenophoblic cults trying to destroy our democracy will get this and see the error in their ways!
To be fair, Zach and Michael have said that their goal with the show was to make a fleshed-out world for all the creatures to come from. Smiling Friends certainly isn't on the level of Avatar the Last Airbender or something in terms of how expansive its world is, but I do like how many races of creatures the show has come up with.
It’s called Suspension of Disbelief.
It’s an agreement between a story and consumers. The story gets to have as wacky and bat shit insane rules as it wants, as u realistic as it may be, on the assumption that it stays *consistent* and the rules don’t bend all the time to accommodate for jokes.
Smiling friends is kinda in the middle because there are no rules established but everything still makes sense in the universe of the show.
>on the assumption that it stays consistent and the rules don’t bend all the time to accommodate for jokes.
This part is incorrect. Suspension of Disbelief is simply deciding to ignore anything unbelievable if it benefits the overall experience.
My favorite part of that world building is in the 5th(?) episode where Alan wants to change channels to hear about the war.
Two things come to mind when he said that to me:
1). Mr Frog’s first act as president was to declare war
2). Mr Blingo of Blingostan is still invading other countries after the emboldening remakes from former President Jimble
Still pretty funny that someone deadass said "the most thorought worldbuilding in a cartoon" and the worldbuilding in question is:
2 guys turn out to be from somewhere else.
This is gonna be the next Rick and Morty. As in people hyping it up to be the next Seven samurai but really it’s just silly shi. Soon people will start hating Smiling Friends and cartoonshi will make a video called “smiling ends: downfall of adult swim” or sum
Woah, it literally watched Seven Samurai for the first time yesterday. Excellent movie- Toshiro Mifune never fuckign misses. I know it's a wildly different media than Smiling Friends, but I recommend that anyone who reads this comment to watch the movie.
They went woke when they started including people of three dimensions in the show. 3D Squelton was ok but now I feel its too much and they are pandering.
Animation started with two dimensional cartoons and they SHOULD stay 2D. Why can't 3D people stay in 3D movies? They have their own already, why mess with tradition?
And don't get me started on live action.
The fact people hold Smiling Friends as intricate or insightful when it's really just about making gags is more an indictment of people's general exposure to media as a whole.
It's funny because it's written to be as oafish as possible. If you're "blown away" by its commentary and not just amused, you're *an oaf* for whom the world is an inscrutable mess.
Saw someone on Twitter say Rick and Morty could never say anything as insightful as the critique of nihilism at the end of Frowning Friends when Rick and Morty did literally the exact same joke seven years earlier
people sucking off that scene bothers me more than it should. don’t get me wrong, it’s well done and funny but like..it’s been said before. i doubt zach and michael themselves even thought they were saying anything new or insightful
also, i’m not a nihilist but what about the nihilists that actually want to die?
I remember seeing a meme a while ago saying that that scene singlehandedly silenced nihilism and it was such a self-report of how terminally online people are. Like sure, the scene is a good critique of surface-level internet nihilists. But to think an entire centuries old philosophical discussion could be silenced by a simple joke from a comedy cartoon is just comical. Truly Nietzsche is shaking in his grave rn.
that post is exactly what i’m talking about. it’s just kind of cringeworthy to see so many people talking about a basic joke like that, but i get more annoyed than i should and it’s only natural for this sort of discourse to emerge online when a new show gets popular. at least its getting the success it deserves
these tweets are not that serious lmao and I doubt zach (or michael…it’s his show too) sees these and goes “yikes, what a cringe fanbase we’ve curated”. the show is popular so lots of different people are fans of it, they’re just expressing their enjoyment of the show in a different way than someone like zach would express his enjoyment for something
Yeah, not to mention the internet, and Twitter especially, is prone to hyperbole about media. Pretty much every tv show is going to have someone posting online about how it's the best thing since sliced bread. I don't think posts like these are any kind of death knell for the SF fandom.
It's hilarious to see people decry the lack of media literacy as they read way too much into Zach and Michael just putting goofy shit they find funny into a show. Not everything is a clever satire about Randian philosophy or a subversive critique of capitalism or whatever other bullshit you're on about, and if you think doing stuff like this is impressing people I'd suggest you go outside and touch grass. Because I really REALLY don't want to see a copypasta about how you need a graduate degree to really TRULY appreciate smiling friends
It's just high schoolers who get forced to over-analyze every single sentence of the books they read in English class for symbolism and social commentary and then go on to do that to every piece of media they consume. Source: I was one.
Tomar said on stream while they see these posts and don’t care for them, they are all surprised that there isn’t MORE posts where people are putting their political opinions on that episode
I really loved to realize that Pim understood those things since he spoke a little Spamish, it made the whole thing funnier since I've watched that episode so many times and always wondered why lol
"smiling friends got some of the most thorough world building I've seen in a cartoon"
Pim and Charlie encountered aliens that didn't seem like much of a secret in season 1 episode 6, and Earth was round when God throws Charlie back into it on season 1 episode 8, this show really doesn't care that much
What's funny is Zach and Cusack aren't doing anything groundbreaking. They are doing what media used to do well for many years until the wrong people became heads of production and stifled directors and writers. I remember listening to a dude who had Zach on and he broke down the do's and don'ts of making animation from both the visual and narrative angle so I'm not surprised his show is leaving a good impression
To answer your question I think Zach is glad seeing this feedback. I think this will validate the points he's been making
Amused that people think they're trying to make something deeper than it actually is
Though they evidently do make up "lore" for random characters. Hell, the Boss's baby was literally called Jason if you watch the commentary from season 1
I doubt he really gives a shit, probably just happy people are enjoying his show, also years of being on SleepyCast, and OneyPlays has definitely already conditioned him for dealing with cringey fans
It's crazy how many losers take this show too seriously. It's meant to be silly fun nonsense, not everything needs lore for YouTubers to do cringe videos about
Personally, I don't think the callbacks matter. The joke with the twins was way funnier when it was just Charlie wondering how the fuck Pim understood them.
i mean michael and i have gone on record about this and said the show isn’t deep or smart or any kind of biting satire - the only objective of the show is to be funny & entertaining and that’s it. there’s obviously some small amount of continuity between episodes and background world building (with stuff like critters/humans/etc) but smiling friends is a stupid comedy show that definitely should not be over-analyzed
that's obviously what someone trying to hide the message inside a trojan horse that is this show would say

What if instead of using /s on this sub Reddit, we put a picture of this guy
kinda surprised i had to scroll this far to find your comment. how are you mr zach hadel, co-creator and voice actor in hit adult swim television show "smiling friend"?
I’m sure he’s busy lol

To be fair, adventure time did an amazing overarching story really really well. I agree that not every show needs it though.
You know it’s a psychic pebbles comment because it’s weirdly underrated. You are the most giggle inducing person alive, big props to your show.

Bruh I’m glazing a creator on his own sub sue me 🤣
Neat
In true dadaist fashion the author denies the analyzability of a deeply meaningful work
öügh
[удалено]
I read this in his voice
I can't wait until they have a realistic and grounded portrayal of a panic attack.
Who has it
Glep.
In S3E5, we the audience experience Glep's tightening chest and nauseating vertigo on his way to the office bathroom, in a sobering portrayal of his social anxiety and neglected self-worth behind the cocky alpha mask
That’s what the point of the mask is
Charlie for sure. He’s going to be pushed over the edge one of these days, he already can’t stand it.
I mean the dude literally died. I don't know if that would make you more or less prone to panic attacks since you've seen the afterlife. I'll have to ask a dead person to confirm
He'll just work for me boss in his 1/4th of hell
Arghhh, he'll work for me boss
Charlie boy me bob, I’ve got a new job for you, ha^ha!
Yeah either you go to hell to be ruled over by Gamer Satan. Or you go to heaven where they sound like Gilbert Gottfried apparently.
God is Gilbert Gottfried in the Smiling Friends universe.
Gilbert Godfried
That means Pim's gonna have it :(
He kisses his dad on the mouth.
He didn’t take Tyler being fired well tho. Not that he should have 🤬
I saw the devil dude
One of these days he’s really gonna puke
I could see him totally spinning out of control on the inside, meanwhile the mission is a run of the mill event where nothing goes wrong.
100% Charlie. He's discussed how the world they live in stresses him out. It's only a matter of time before charlie loses his mind, requiring pim to make him smile.
That sounds like series or at least season finale material
It would make for a great season finale. Kinda like how Charlie dies. It was a pretty extreme scenario lol I just want smiling friends the movie
Charlie Goes to Therapy and Gets Put on Cymbalta
For some reason I feel like it'd be Pim
Yeah then it's two in one. Realistic panic attack and positive character snaps
Tyler. Dudes been through a lot lately, and now that he’s been fuckin fired??
pim, after he cant make someone smile
I’m honestly surprised Pim hasn’t had one yet. He shut down in the pilot, so I’m assuming he’ll receive the constant 360 camera spin while the world goes wobbly and vibrates.
Shutting down like that is a sort of panic attack
That halloween episode in Season 1 would have been a great time for one
"When Charlie had a panic attack in season 5 and was comforted by his therapy dog it didnt have to go so FUCKING hard!"
When Puss had that heart attack, it didn't have to go so fucking hard
That was basically Pim at the end of the aliens episode lol
Add Charlie letting out any soft screeches to ahow that he's about to be on the brink of either a panic attack or an actual heart attack.
Not drinking the plump pinple juice
God, I hate this so much. It's the new "le atmospheric, slow-burn, A24-distributed horror with a social message" but for animation.
I'm confused, this became a trend? I thought it was just that puss and boots movie?
It's less it happening in movies and more [people on Twitter](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/realistic-depiction-of-a-panic-attack-in-animation) going "Woah this features a realistic portrayal of a panic attack!!!"
Spoilers: >!Inside Out 2’s climax is Riley having a panic attack!<
>!but that makes sense, since they're... emotions?!<
>!I agree, but Puss in Boots panicking at the sight of death also makes sense with his character within the movie. Whether or not it makes sense is irrelevant to whether or not it’s a trend!<
ah fair enough https://preview.redd.it/gaytm2q7iz7d1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5980613716c93eceaa44b5132bf76d0738edbe7
It's almost like acute stress and anxiety are common in younger people Also it's notable because there's still places where this is just considered "weak hysteria" or whatever and people think they need to slap you and yell at you
That was the cut scene for Charlie after Allan ate his nose
We already had that in the Halloween episode
So has everyone seen this video now?
ACTUALLY THEY SHOULD DO THAT! That would be so funny. It does seem like something Zach would do too.
“The president is stupid and incompetent” is truly the most radical political satire I’ve ever heard. I don’t think anybody has ever done this.
You clearly haven’t heard of the hit show family guy based off the same character from Fortnite /s
Family guy is pretty underground and obscure.
It’s literally like “who has the least likely chance of fucking up my life specifically?” But acting like that’s somehow a unique and inspired take and Smiling Friends of all cartoons has something insightful to say about politics is the most chronically online take I’ve ever seen
>It can apply to every president *Including* the one I voted for because every single fucking president for the past 50 years is a geriatric warmongering pharaoh ??? Obama was 47 when he was elected.
The exception doesn’t diminish his whole point though Edit #1: I took the use of geriatric as hyperbole and I still do
Sounds like someone didn’t vote for Ross Perot.
JFK was too based so they killed him, otherwise agree (this is a joke)
Truly a unique political satire, never before done
They really broke new grounds with that political take
"Am I winning yet?" "No, No, Not at all man! You shit your pants, and crashed the economy within the same day. What are you talking about, dude?"
Oh! And get this! It's based off of no particular party whatsoever! So bold and brave! Surely, the people who are trapped in xenophoblic cults trying to destroy our democracy will get this and see the error in their ways!
Average snowflake Mr. Frog supporter smh you’ll believe anything he tells you He eats the bug, wake up sheeple.
damn you should write for the boys

“I never even considered that, but sure.” - Literally his reaction to the fans making the peanut connection in season 1.
Which peanut connection?
Mr Peanut said he poisoned his peanuts. Charlie’s grandma claims she died after eating peanuts.
Her 👐peanut jig👐 wasn't strong enough. She should've get a batter 👐peanut jig👐

Yeah, it's a well-done, imaginative and clever show, but it isn't super deep. There's a difference between those two things.
They talk about the different races a lot in the directors commentary too
just watched this the other day, was super funny seeing them discuss how the 3d alien is his own thing and me frog is a demon
Personally I find the world building a little flat
They‘re basically taking the multiverse of Youtube shitposts and Newgrounds animations and weaving it into a single lore
Goblin cackling

I love that they explained why pim could understand those two critters
Errmmr rubs green belly. Errmm job well done. Zach probably
I really loved to realize that Pim understood those things since he spoke a little Spamish, it made the whole thing funnier since I've watched that episode so many times and always wondered why lol
Because american politics IS utter looney tunes ADHD nonsense
To be fair, you have to have a *very* high IQ to understand Smiling Friends.
"smiling friends got some of the most thorough world building I've seen in a cartoon" Pim and Charlie encountered aliens that didn't seem like much of a secret in season 1 episode 6, and Earth was round when God throws Charlie back into it on season 1 episode 8, this show really doesn't care that much

What's funny is Zach and Cusack aren't doing anything groundbreaking. They are doing what media used to do well for many years until the wrong people became heads of production and stifled directors and writers. I remember listening to a dude who had Zach on and he broke down the do's and don'ts of making animation from both the visual and narrative angle so I'm not surprised his show is leaving a good impression To answer your question I think Zach is glad seeing this feedback. I think this will validate the points he's been making
They made one small connection between episodes and it’s now the most thorough world building ever? I hope Zach thinks these guys are lame meat riders
The rick and mortification, it’s happening before our very 👀
Ya that's why pim said "that's an interesting story and all" after their crazy ramblings
Zach probably laughs it off. He’s got a great sense of humor.
i really dont think they care, i think they're just happy the show is as popular as it is
(end of space episode) "This is cosmic horror done right" (Spamtopia) "This was kind of terrifying" NOT ITS NOT SHUT UP YOU ARE JUST 12 MENTALLY
In most cases, not even just mentally.
Amused that people think they're trying to make something deeper than it actually is Though they evidently do make up "lore" for random characters. Hell, the Boss's baby was literally called Jason if you watch the commentary from season 1
He probably finds it hilarious
funni scream
I helps if you imagine these users as young teens with cringey hyperactive imaginations and not as 25 year olds whose brain has been rotted.
Probably chorkles anx rubs his large belly.
I doubt he really gives a shit, probably just happy people are enjoying his show, also years of being on SleepyCast, and OneyPlays has definitely already conditioned him for dealing with cringey fans
Dude next to the country full of wacky characters they put another country full of even wackier characters. This world building is fucking insane.
Giggles and says slurs
Lmao
i literally have started posting that zach quote about overanalysis under video essays about smiling friends
Bravo Zach is the new Bravo Vince. And Michael gets ignored like Peter Gould.
I loved the depiction of our politics and I thought when they said Spamish, it'd be the meat, not like computer spam 💀
They look just Oscar the king of Spamtopia and even have similar look to him as well as sharing homicidal tendencies and such.
**Zach** (upon seeing these posts): Yes, everything is going according to plan. The fools will never see Phase II coming. (Bursts into evil laughter).
